Chapter 9 - The Trial of Vanessa Hart

Vanessa survived the shooting.

Christian was charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, and cybercrime. The evidence against him was overwhelming.

Vanessa faced charges as well.

During the trial, prosecutors revealed the full scope of their plan: the financial theft, the forged medical documents, the surveillance devices, the abduction, and the years-long manipulation of Ethan.

The public called Vanessa a monster.

But Ethan never used that word.

When reporters asked him outside the courthouse, he said only, “What she did was unforgivable. But I refuse to let hatred decide who I become.”

Maria watched the trial from the gallery, holding Lily’s hand.

Lily had begun meeting with a child therapist. She still woke from nightmares. She still checked the locks twice before bed. But she was healing.

One afternoon, she asked Ethan, “Is Miss Vanessa going to be sad forever?”

Ethan looked at her carefully.

“I don’t know.”

“Should we be happy?”

“We should be grateful that we’re safe.”

Lily thought about that.

Then she nodded.

At trial, Vanessa finally testified.

She admitted that Christian had planned the theft and blackmailed her after she tried to leave him. She admitted that she had lied to Ethan, manipulated Maria, and helped create false documents.

But she also admitted something nobody expected.

“I did love Ethan,” she said, crying. “That was the part I hated most.”

The jury found her guilty.

Christian received the longest sentence.

Vanessa was sentenced to prison.

As officers led her away, she looked once toward Ethan.

He did not smile.

He did not look triumphant.

He simply looked tired.

And finally free.
