Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Last Card

Vanessa disappeared before dawn.

The police arrived at her hotel suite to find the bed untouched, her gown gone, and one message written in red lipstick across the bathroom mirror:

YOU DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.

Ethan read the message without speaking.

Marcus increased security around Maria and Lily immediately. Ethan moved them into a protected guest wing at his penthouse, but Maria resisted.

“We can’t stay here forever,” she said.

“No,” Ethan answered. “But you’ll stay until she’s found.”

That afternoon, Ethan received an anonymous package.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed a young woman standing beside Grace Cole outside a hospital. The woman had dark hair, frightened eyes, and one hand resting on a round pregnant belly.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note:

Ask your mother what she did to mine.

Ethan went cold.

Grace had died three years earlier.

He had never known Vanessa’s mother.

But after hours of searching through old files, Marcus found a connection.

Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor Hart, had once worked at a small private clinic in Ohio.

The same clinic where Ethan’s mother had received treatment during her final illness.

And years before that, Eleanor had been involved in a legal dispute with Grace Cole over a medical negligence case.

Grace had testified against the clinic.

The clinic lost.

Eleanor lost her job.

Vanessa’s family lost everything.

For the first time, Ethan understood that Vanessa’s plan had never begun at a museum fundraiser.

It had begun years before they met.

She had researched him.

Studied him.

Built herself into the woman he wanted.

But revenge had made her careless.

The package also contained a flash drive.

On it was a video.

Vanessa sat in a dark room, staring into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, Ethan,” she said, “then Christian betrayed me. I knew he would eventually.”

She smiled sadly.

“You think I’m the villain. Maybe I am. But your mother ruined mine. She took away our home, our reputation, our future. And you got to grow up and become everything my family lost.”

The video paused.

Then Vanessa leaned toward the camera.

“You want the truth? Find the safe deposit box your mother opened in 2009. The key is in the only place you still refuse to enter.”

Ethan knew exactly what she meant.

His mother’s old guest room.

The room he had avoided for years.

That night, he stood outside its door.

Maria stood beside him.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” she said.

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time since the wedding, his voice shook.

“I don’t know what I’ll find.”

Maria placed a hand over his.

“Then we find it together.”

May you like

He opened the door.
