Chapter 8 - The Bridge in the Storm

Vanessa had taken Lily from the penthouse playground.

The security cameras showed her wearing a maintenance uniform and a baseball cap. She had distracted a guard with a false fire alarm, entered through a service elevator, and disappeared with Lily in less than four minutes.

A voicemail arrived moments later.

Vanessa’s voice was calm.

“Bring the safe deposit documents to the old Hudson rail bridge. Come alone. No police.”

In the background, Lily was crying.

Ethan’s entire body went cold.

Marcus insisted on contacting law enforcement. Ethan agreed—but only after they arranged a covert operation.

Rain poured over the city as Ethan drove toward the abandoned bridge. He carried the documents in a leather folder.

Vanessa stood beneath the rusted steel structure, holding Lily’s hand.

Lily clutched Mr. Buttons and looked terrified.

“Mr. Ethan!” she cried.

Ethan stopped several feet away.

“I’m here, Lily.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“She trusted you,” Vanessa said. “That’s almost sweet.”

“Let her go.”

“Give me the documents.”

Ethan held up the folder.

“You wanted revenge against me. Leave her out of this.”

Vanessa’s expression twisted.

“She is part of this because she reminded you what you are capable of feeling.”

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Yes,” Vanessa whispered. “I do.”

She grabbed Lily’s shoulder.

Lily winced.

Ethan’s voice became deadly calm.

“Vanessa. Let. Her. Go.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Then Christian appeared from behind an old freight container.

He had escaped custody days earlier.

He held a gun.

“You really thought she planned this alone?” he said.

Vanessa spun toward him. “You said you were leaving the country.”

“I lied.”

Christian took the folder from Ethan.

Then he pointed the gun at Vanessa.

“You’ve become inconvenient.”

Vanessa stared at him.

In that moment, Ethan saw the truth.

Christian had never loved Vanessa.

He had used her too.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at Ethan.

And something shifted.

Maybe it was regret.

Maybe it was the memory of the girl she had once been.

Vanessa shoved Lily toward Ethan.

“Run!” she screamed.

A gunshot cracked through the rain.

Vanessa fell.

Marcus and the police moved in from both sides. Christian tried to flee but slipped on the wet metal and was tackled by officers.

Ethan held Lily tightly against his chest.

She was shaking.

“I knew you’d come,” she whispered.

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I will always come.”

Across the bridge, Vanessa lay on the ground, bleeding but conscious.

She looked at Ethan.

“I wanted you to hurt,” she whispered.

“You did,” Ethan said.

Her eyes filled with tears.

May you like

“But you didn’t win.”
