Chapter 4 - The Wedding Stops

Eleven days later, Lily’s warning echoed beneath the white rose arch at Rosewood Manor.

“Don’t marry her!”

The guests stared.

Vanessa’s face had gone pale beneath her veil.

Ethan remained on one knee before Lily, the diamond ring still resting in his hand.

“Why do you think she’ll make me cry?” he asked softly.

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Then she buried her face against Mr. Buttons.

“She said so,” Lily whispered. “She said after the wedding you would be sad.”

A ripple of whispers moved through the guests.

Vanessa recovered quickly.

“She’s a child,” she said with a gentle laugh. “She probably misunderstood something.”

Maria stepped forward, shaking.

“No,” she said.

Everyone turned toward her.

Maria looked at Ethan.

“I should have told you sooner.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Maria,” she warned.

But Maria kept going.

“Lily overheard Vanessa speaking to a man named Christian Vale. They talked about your money. About what would happen after the marriage.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

Christian Vale sat in the third row, wearing a dark navy suit.

He stood abruptly.

“This is absurd,” he said. “I’ve never met this woman.”

Lily pointed at him.

“That’s the yellow-hair man.”

The guests gasped.

Christian’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa stepped toward Ethan. “You cannot possibly believe this.”

Ethan rose slowly.

His fingers closed around the ring.

“I asked you about Christian,” he said.

“And I told you he was an old friend.”

“You never told me he was here.”

“He was invited by my family.”

“No,” Ethan replied. “He wasn’t.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Ethan had personally approved every guest list revision. Christian’s name had not been on it.

Then Ethan’s chief of security, Marcus Bell, approached from the side aisle. He leaned close and whispered something in Ethan’s ear.

Ethan’s face turned white.

“What is it?” Vanessa asked.

Marcus looked at her.

“Mr. Cole’s private financial server was accessed last night,” he said. “The intrusion originated from an encrypted device registered to Christian Vale.”

The ballroom exploded with noise.

Christian turned toward the exit.

Marcus moved faster.

Two security guards blocked the doors.

Vanessa looked at Christian.

Christian looked back at her.

And in that single moment, Ethan saw the truth.

Not because either of them confessed.

But because neither of them looked surprised.

Ethan stared at Vanessa, the woman he had planned to marry.

“You used me,” he said.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears—perfect tears, controlled tears.

“I loved you.”

“Did you?”

Her voice broke. “At first, I didn’t know. But then—”

“Don’t,” Ethan said.

The word was quiet.

But it cut through the room.

He looked down at Lily, who stood trembling beside Maria.

Then he held out his hand.

Lily placed her small fingers in his.

And together, they walked away from the altar.

Behind them, Vanessa screamed his name.

May you like

But Ethan did not turn around.
