Chapter 5 - The Hidden Transfer

The wedding was over before the music began again.

Guests were escorted from Rosewood Manor in stunned silence. Reporters gathered outside the gates within an hour. Every news site in New York carried some version of the same headline:

BILLIONAIRE CALLS OFF WEDDING AT ALTAR AFTER CHILD’S WARNING.

Inside the estate, Ethan sat in his private office with Marcus, Maria, and a team of forensic accountants.

Christian Vale had been detained for questioning, but Vanessa had said nothing.

Not one word.

“She had access through the wedding planning company,” Marcus explained. “Someone planted a device in the event coordination equipment.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

Millions of dollars had been moved through a maze of shell companies. Most transfers had failed because Northstar’s security systems caught them. But one account remained vulnerable: a personal trust created years earlier by Ethan’s late mother.

Grace Cole’s trust.

The money had not been taken yet.

But Vanessa and Christian had prepared everything.

“They needed the marriage certificate,” Ethan said.

“Yes,” Marcus replied. “Once legal status changed, Vanessa could petition for shared authorization under the trust’s marital provisions.”

Maria sat quietly in the corner.

Guilt weighed heavily on her face.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I should have told you everything.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You were threatened.”

“But I still stayed quiet.”

“You protected your daughter.”

Maria looked down at Lily, who had fallen asleep on a sofa with Mr. Buttons beneath her chin.

“I thought silence would keep her safe.”

Ethan’s eyes darkened.

“That’s what they wanted you to think.”

Across the city, Vanessa was under police watch in a luxury hotel suite. She had not been arrested. There was not yet enough evidence to charge her directly.

Then Marcus received a call.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Ethan asked.

“The police found Christian’s laptop.”

“And?”

“He had a file labeled ‘Cole Contingency.’”

Marcus opened it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Financial plans.

False medical reports.

Photos of Ethan entering a clinic two years earlier after a panic attack.

And one document that made the room go silent.

It was a draft petition to declare Ethan mentally unfit to manage his own estate.

Vanessa had not only planned to steal from him.

She had planned to destroy his credibility.

To make the world believe the billionaire founder of Northstar Systems was unstable.

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

For years, he had feared people wanted his money.

But Vanessa had wanted more than money.

She had wanted control.

Then Lily woke up suddenly.

“Mama?”

Maria rushed to her.

Lily sat up, eyes wide with fear.

“The lady is coming,” she whispered.

Ethan looked toward the dark windows.

Outside, rain hit the glass.

And somewhere in the storm, Vanessa Hart was making her next move.
