Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY ABOVE THE CITY

Wind tore across the rooftop.

The gala lights glowed beneath us through the ballroom skylight. Beyond the hotel, Manhattan stretched in every direction.

Celeste held the red folder against her chest.

Julian aimed the gun at Adrian.

Adrian stared at his mother.

“You kept it.”

“I keep everything that gives me leverage.”

“You told me it was destroyed.”

“I told you what kept you useful.”

Julian laughed.

“You planned to give us both to the police.”

“I planned to preserve the Vale name.”

“You are the Vale name,” Adrian said.

“No. The company is.”

Celeste had spent decades convincing her sons that blood made them powerful.

Now she was abandoning them for the corporation they had poisoned.

I remained near the stairwell door, my phone recording inside my clutch.

Adrian noticed me.

His expression became almost peaceful.

“This began with you.”

“No. It began when your family decided poor workers were easier to bury than expensive mistakes.”

Julian moved the gun toward me.

“My company is gone because your father couldn’t mind his business.”

“My father’s business was keeping people alive.”

Celeste opened the red folder.

Inside were original payment authorizations, inspection notes, and private letters.

She had kept the documents in case Adrian or Julian ever attempted to remove her from control.

“I can still negotiate,” she said. “The company can survive if prosecutors receive two guilty sons and one cooperative mother.”

Julian stared at her.

“You ordered Mateo’s death.”

“I ordered discretion.”

“You told me to make the balcony failure complete.”

“You chose the method.”

Their confession carried clearly across my phone.

Adrian looked toward the stairwell.

Police voices rose from below.

Celeste heard them too.

She stepped toward the roof’s private elevator.

Adrian blocked her.

“You are not leaving.”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed above the city.

“You were weak enough to marry that woman and foolish enough to believe she loved you.”

I almost smiled.

Even at the end, Celeste could not imagine love without domination.

Adrian grabbed the red folder.

Julian moved between them.

The gun fired.

The bullet entered the glass greenhouse, sending cracks across one panel.

Everyone froze.

Julian stared at the weapon as if surprised it obeyed him.

Adrian lunged.

The brothers crashed against the rooftop rail.

Julian dropped the gun.

It slid toward the edge.

I kicked it away.

Celeste ran for the elevator.

Detective Brooks entered through the stairwell with armed agents.

“Stop!”

Celeste continued.

The elevator doors opened.

She stepped inside.

Naomi stood there with two federal officers.

Celeste’s face finally lost its composure.

Naomi held up an arrest warrant.

“You built a remarkable paper trail.”

Agents handcuffed her.

On the opposite side of the roof, Adrian forced Julian against the rail.

“You ruined everything.”

Julian laughed.

“You pushed your own wife off a balcony.”

“She survived.”

“You sound disappointed.”

Adrian struck him.

Julian slipped.

One leg went over the edge.

He grabbed the rail with both hands.

Adrian looked down at him.

For one second, I saw the balcony again.

Adrian peeling my fingers away.

The cold satisfaction on his face.

Julian looked up at his brother.

“Help me.”

Adrian reached toward his hand.

Then stopped.

Detective Brooks ordered him to step back.

He ignored her.

“If you fall,” Adrian whispered, “you take the murder with you.”

He began prying Julian’s fingers from the rail.

I moved before I thought.

I caught Julian’s wrist.

Pain tore through my injured shoulder.

Detective Brooks and another agent reached us and pulled him onto the roof.

Adrian stared at me.

“After what he did to your father?”

“I saved him because I am not you.”

That sentence destroyed something inside him.

He rushed toward me.

Agents forced him to the ground.

Handcuffs closed around his wrists again.

Julian lay on the concrete, gasping.

“You saved me.”

“No,” I said. “I saved myself from becoming part of your family.”

The gala ended with three Vale family members under arrest.

The pension acquisition collapsed before midnight.

Federal regulators seized company records.

City inspectors evacuated two Vale towers after emergency reviews confirmed dangerous balcony anchors.

No residents were injured.

For the first time, the failures were addressed before someone fell.

Adrian, Julian, and Celeste blamed one another during separate interviews.

Their stories contradicted every recording.

The red folder contradicted them all.

Robert Kline, the corrupt inspector, surrendered the following morning.

Dr. Hale was arrested for false psychiatric evaluations and Miguel’s illegal confinement.

The Vale empire did not collapse in one dramatic moment.

It came apart through documents, witnesses, bank transfers, and people who finally stopped being afraid of the surname.

My shoulder required surgery.

I spent the next month in rehabilitation.

During one session, Naomi arrived carrying a letter.

The Vale Development board had been dissolved. A federal receiver controlled the company.

Thousands of employees faced uncertainty.

Architects, engineers, laborers, and administrative workers who had no part in the fraud could lose their jobs.

The receiver wanted me to serve on the restructuring committee.

“You want me to help save their company?” I asked.

“No,” Naomi replied. “They want you to help build a different one.”

Before I could answer, Detective Brooks called.

Miguel had disappeared from protective housing.

On his bed, investigators found a note.

Celeste kept one final name out of the red folder. Mateo knew who it was. I’m going to finish what we started.
