Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE SCREENS CAME ALIVE

Five hundred guests filled the Vale Foundation ballroom.
Crystal chandeliers reflected across black marble. Politicians, investors, celebrities, and executives moved beneath banners celebrating “A Century of Building Trust.”
The words almost made me laugh.
I entered through the main doors wearing a dark green gown with one sleeve designed to support my injured shoulder.
Conversation stopped in waves.
Adrian stood near the stage.
His expression did not change until he realized I was walking directly toward him.
Then he smiled.
The cameras turned.
“Sofia,” he said, loud enough for nearby guests to hear. “You should be resting.”
“You’ve always been concerned about appearances.”
He leaned closer.
“You should have died the first time.”
His hand closed around my injured arm.
Pain burned through my shoulder.
Five hundred people saw a husband appearing to guide his unstable wife away from a stage.
Only I heard the threat.
Adrian pulled me toward him.
“You came here believing evidence matters,” he whispered. “By morning, every network will call you a jealous liar.”
I lifted the microphone from the podium.
“You’re right, Adrian.”
He froze.
“Someone is going to lose everything tonight.”
Every ballroom screen turned black.
Then the balcony footage appeared.
Adrian crushed my hand.
He peeled my fingers from the railing.
He smiled as I fell.
Gasps moved through the ballroom.
He released my arm.
“This is fabricated!”
The screens divided into six sections.
My father’s original anchor calculations.
Payments to Julian’s shell company.
Celeste’s bribes to inspectors.
The hidden recording from Adrian’s study.
If Mateo goes public, the pension sale dies.
Then he doesn’t go public.
Guests began moving toward the exits.
The ballroom doors opened.
Federal agents entered alongside Detective Brooks.
Behind them came Miguel Santos in a wheelchair, accompanied by two protective officers.
Adrian’s face changed.
“You’re dead,” he whispered.
Miguel looked at him.
“That was your plan.”
The pension-fund chairman stood.
“Was our due-diligence team given falsified inspection records?”
Naomi stepped onto the stage.
“Yes. Certified originals have been delivered to federal prosecutors and your legal counsel.”
Board members turned on one another.
Investors demanded answers.
Reporters raised cameras.
Adrian grabbed the microphone.
“My wife has orchestrated a criminal attack against this family.”
A final video appeared.
Celeste stood inside Adrian’s study with my father.
She placed the broken safety bolt on the desk.
Nothing that cannot be repaired with the right report.
Then Miguel’s recorded testimony described Mateo’s murder.
Julian’s hand on my father’s.
Adrian watching.
The ballroom became silent.
Adrian looked toward the exits.
Agents blocked them.
He moved toward me instead.
“You ungrateful little—”
Detective Brooks stepped between us.
“Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.”
He laughed.
“You have no idea who you are touching.”
She placed him in handcuffs.
“I know exactly.”
Then the lights went out.
Not the screens.
Every light.
Emergency alarms began screaming.
Someone had overridden the building system.
A gunshot cracked near the rear doors.
People dropped behind tables.
Adrian twisted away from Detective Brooks as a second shot shattered a chandelier.
Julian appeared on the upper balcony holding a pistol.
He had entered through the mechanical level using his executive access code.
“Everybody stays where they are!” he shouted.
He looked at Adrian.
“You were supposed to destroy the files.”
Adrian stared upward.
“You were supposed to leave the country.”
Julian’s face twisted.
“Mother gave me up.”
Celeste had planned to sacrifice both sons.
Julian pointed the weapon toward me.
“You did this.”
“No,” I called. “Your family did.”
He fired toward the stage.
The bullet struck the podium.
Agents returned fire, forcing him behind the balcony rail.
Adrian shoved Detective Brooks and ran through the service door.
I followed before anyone could stop me.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because the service corridor led to the roof.
And the note in Celeste’s safe had promised a second fall.
By the time I reached the final stairwell, Adrian had caught Julian near the rooftop greenhouse.
The brothers stood beneath the winter sky, each blaming the other.
Then Celeste stepped from behind the glass doors.

She held the original red folder.
“You always were disappointing,” she told them.
