Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE

The first person who reached me was not Adrian.

It was Luis Ramirez, the night maintenance supervisor, who found me curled on the cracked glass awning with blood running down my right arm.

“Mrs. Vale, don’t move.”

Above us, the steel shutters remained sealed across the penthouse balcony. Adrian struck them from inside while pretending he was trapped by a malfunction.

“Open this door!” he shouted. “My wife jumped!”

Even half-conscious, I understood what he was doing.

He was creating his story before the police arrived.

Luis clipped a safety line around my waist while firefighters raised a rescue platform. Every movement sent pain through my shoulder, but I forced myself to remain awake.

“He pushed me,” I whispered.

Luis looked toward the bronze falcon above the balcony.

“Did the camera catch it?”

“Yes.”

He lowered his voice.

“Then don’t tell anyone where the backup is.”

Adrian had installed most of the tower’s surveillance system through Vale Security, a subsidiary controlled by Julian. He believed deleting the penthouse footage meant deleting the truth.

The camera inside the falcon did not belong to Vale Security.

Neither did the encrypted server receiving its signal.

The ambulance carried me to Lenox Hill Hospital with a dislocated shoulder, two fractured ribs, a broken finger, and a deep cut across my palm. Doctors said the reinforced awning had saved my life.

Adrian arrived before I left the trauma unit.

He wore a torn shirt and the expression of a grieving husband.

“My wife has been under tremendous emotional pressure,” he told a police officer outside my room. “Her father’s death changed her.”

I heard every word through the curtain.

“She became obsessed with conspiracy theories,” he continued. “Tonight, we argued. She climbed over the railing before I could stop her.”

The officer asked whether Adrian had touched me.

“Only to save her.”

I closed my eyes.

He had already erased the visible camera footage. He had probably removed anything from the penthouse connecting him to my father’s investigation.

But he did not know about the independent backup.

A detective entered my room shortly before dawn. Her name was Lena Brooks. She had dark hair tied behind her neck and the exhausted eyes of someone who had spent years listening to rich people explain why laws worked differently for them.

“Your husband says you attempted suicide.”

“My husband pushed me.”

“Do you have evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I need an attorney first.”

She studied me.

“Good answer.”

Adrian tried to enter during the interview.

Hospital security stopped him.

Then Celeste arrived.

She wore a black cashmere coat and carried my purse as though she were bringing me a thoughtful gift.

“My poor darling,” she said.

She kissed the air beside my cheek.

“You frightened all of us.”

“You don’t frighten easily.”

Her smile remained in place.

“You need rest.”

She placed several documents beside my bed. A medical authorization. A psychiatric evaluation request. A temporary power of attorney allowing Adrian to handle my financial affairs while I recovered.

“You prepared these quickly,” I said.

“Our attorneys are efficient.”

“I’m not signing.”

Celeste sat down.

“Sofia, you fell thirty floors after accusing your husband of murdering your father. Imagine how that sounds.”

“Accurate?”

“To unstable people, perhaps.”

Her voice softened.

“Adrian loves you. He is willing to forgive tonight’s embarrassment.”

“He tried to kill me.”

She looked toward the door, confirming no one else stood nearby.

Then her expression changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“You should have accepted the life he gave you.”

“My father accepted a job your family gave him.”

“And look where refusing gratitude took him.”

The words were almost a confession.

I reached toward the call button.

Celeste caught my injured hand.

Pain shot through my wrist.

“Do not make this uglier,” she whispered.

The door opened.

Detective Brooks stood in the hallway.

Celeste released me immediately.

“I was comforting my daughter-in-law.”

“From the sound of it, she needs less comfort and more distance.”

Celeste left the room with her posture perfectly straight.

Ten minutes later, my attorney arrived.

Naomi Chen had helped me establish the independent safety-consulting firm I operated before marrying Adrian. She was also the only person outside my father’s old crew who knew I had been investigating Vale Development.

I gave her the access code to the encrypted server.

She opened the files on an isolated laptop.

The balcony video appeared.

Adrian crushing my hand.

Adrian peeling my fingers from the railing.

Adrian smiling as I fell.

Detective Brooks watched without blinking.

“That gives me attempted murder,” she said.

“Not yet,” Naomi warned. “The defense will challenge chain of custody.”

“There are time stamps and remote backups.”

“There is also a billionaire family with an army of attorneys.”

I understood.

Evidence did not become justice automatically.

It had to survive everything powerful people did to discredit it.

We reviewed the remaining files.

The falcon camera had recorded more than the attack. Its microphone captured Adrian making a call moments afterward.

“Delete the balcony feed,” he said. “Then contact Dr. Hale. Tell him Sofia had another episode.”

Another episode.

There had never been a first.

A nurse entered carrying a syringe.

“Dr. Hale ordered something to help you rest.”

Detective Brooks examined the label.

“What is it?”

“A sedative.”

“I did not consent,” I said.

“The order was approved by your husband.”

Naomi stood.

“Her husband has no medical authority.”

The nurse hesitated.

Then she placed the syringe on the tray and left.

Detective Brooks followed her into the hallway.

Less than a minute later, an alarm sounded.

The nurse had disappeared through a service elevator.

The hospital had no employee under the name displayed on her badge.

The syringe contained enough medication to leave me unconscious for nearly a day.

Adrian was not trying to help me rest.

He was trying to create the mental-health crisis he had already described to police.

Detective Brooks arranged protective custody.

Before I was transferred, Naomi opened one final encrypted file from the falcon server.

The video had been recorded four months earlier.

My father stood inside the penthouse study.

He looked frightened.

“Sofia,” he said into the hidden camera, “if you find this, Adrian knows about the anchor reports.”

A door opened behind him.

Celeste entered.

My father turned.

She held a red folder in one hand.

In the other was the broken safety bolt later found beside his body.
