Chapter 6 - The Trial of Daniel Carter
The trial began eight months later.
By then, Carter Freight Systems had survived the scandal.
The board removed Daniel permanently and appointed an interim CEO. Emily accepted a temporary role as a compliance adviser—not because she wanted power, but because she refused to let the company’s employees suffer for Daniel’s greed.
Truck drivers who had lost benefits received back pay.
Several regional offices that Daniel had planned to close remained open.
The company established a whistleblower protection program in Elias—no, not Elias. That was another story. This was Emily’s story, and she had decided it would not be defined by any man.
She also created a workplace safety fund for employees facing harassment or assault.
It was the first proposal she made.
And it passed unanimously.
In court, Daniel looked smaller than Emily remembered.
He no longer wore expensive tailored suits. His hair had gone gray at the temples. He sat beside his attorneys, avoiding the cameras whenever possible.
Vanessa sat at a separate table.
She looked nothing like the polished assistant from Daniel’s office. Her confidence had evaporated beneath the weight of her own choices.
When Emily took the stand, the courtroom fell silent.
The prosecutor asked about the fraud.
Emily answered clearly.
Then he asked about the day Vanessa attacked her.
Emily looked briefly at Daniel.
“He saw what happened,” she said. “And his first concern was not whether I was hurt. It was whether Vanessa was in trouble.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
The prosecutor asked, “How did that make you feel?”
Emily paused.
“Like I had finally seen the truth.”
Rachel had warned her that the defense would try to make the case personal. They would call her angry. Vengeful. Bitter.
And they did.
Daniel’s attorney suggested that Emily had used a marital dispute to seize control of the company.
Emily did not raise her voice.
“I did not seize anything,” she said. “I exposed what was stolen.”
The evidence was overwhelming.
The financial records.
The emails.
The shell companies.
The video footage.
The recorded call.
Marcus Reed’s testimony.
And, most damaging of all, Daniel’s own messages to Vanessa discussing how to hide money from the board and “keep Emily distracted.”
After six weeks, the jury returned with its verdict.
Daniel Carter was found guilty on multiple counts of embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy.
Vanessa Brooks was found guilty of conspiracy, evidence tampering, stalking, and assault.
When the judge read Daniel’s sentence, he closed his eyes.
Emily felt no joy.
Only closure.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
One asked, “Mrs. Carter, do you have anything to say to your ex-husband?”
Emily looked toward the building.
Then she looked at Lily, who stood beside Rachel holding her hand.
“Yes,” Emily said.
The cameras leaned in.
“I hope he learns that success without integrity is just a more expensive kind of failure.”
Then she walked away.
Lily looked up at her.
“Are we really done now?”
Emily squeezed her hand.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
But Lily’s expression remained serious.
“What happens next?”
Emily smiled.
