Chapter 3 - The Emergency Meeting

The emergency board meeting began at 6:30 p.m.
Daniel logged in from his office, still wearing the expression of a man who believed he could talk his way out of anything. Vanessa stood behind him, arms crossed, her face pale but defiant.
Emily joined from Rachel Monroe’s law office.
She had changed into a simple navy blazer. Her hair was still uneven, still visibly damaged, but she had stopped trying to hide it.
Rachel had offered to arrange a stylist or bring in someone from a nearby salon.
Emily had declined.
“No,” she said. “I want them to see what their choices look like.”
Across the screen sat the company’s seven board members, legal counsel, the chief financial officer Marcus Reed, and Robert Hale, the company chairman.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“This is an abuse of company procedure,” he said. “My wife is upset because of a private marital disagreement.”
Rachel’s expression did not move.
“This is not a marital disagreement, Mr. Carter,” she said. “This is a corporate fraud investigation.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Emily watched him carefully.
For fourteen years, she had known every version of Daniel Carter.
The charming young entrepreneur who had brought her coffee while she studied for exams.
The ambitious husband who promised that their success would always be shared.
The exhausted father who came home late and carried sleeping Lily from the couch to bed.
And, eventually, the man who stopped looking at her like she mattered.
But she had never seen this version before.
This was Daniel when the room no longer belonged to him.
Rachel displayed the first document.
A spreadsheet appeared on every screen.
“These transactions,” Rachel said, “show nineteen separate payments made by Carter Freight Systems to three consulting firms over the past twenty-six months.”
Marcus Reed shifted in his chair.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Those are legitimate vendors.”
“Are they?” Rachel asked.
She clicked to the next page.
“The companies have no employees, no active public contracts, no legitimate office addresses, and no history of providing logistics services. However, they do have one thing in common.”
A final document appeared.
Each company was registered through a financial trust connected to Vanessa Brooks.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Daniel’s face went white.
“That doesn’t prove anything,” he said quickly.
“No?” Rachel replied.
She brought up bank records.
The transfers from the shell companies had been routed into accounts controlled by Daniel, Marcus, and Vanessa.
The total amount was $18.7 million.
The board went silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked away.
“Emily,” Daniel said, his voice softening suddenly. “You don’t understand what you’re looking at. These are temporary transfers. There are business explanations.”
Emily spoke for the first time.
“You stole from your employees.”
Daniel blinked.
“What?”
“You cut driver benefits last year,” Emily said. “You said the company had to tighten spending because fuel costs were too high.”
She looked at the figures on the screen.
“At the same time, you were paying for Vanessa’s apartment, your trips to Miami, and private accounts under false names.”
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Do not bring my personal life into this.”
“You brought it into the company,” Emily replied. “You used corporate money to fund it.”
Vanessa stepped closer to Daniel.
“This is because you’re jealous,” she said. “You’re trying to destroy him because he doesn’t love you anymore.”
Emily turned toward her.
“No,” she said quietly. “I’m destroying the lie that you both built.”
Rachel then presented the final evidence.
Security footage from that afternoon.
It showed Vanessa following Emily into the executive restroom. It showed raised voices. It showed Vanessa grabbing Emily’s hair. It showed Daniel entering moments later—and instead of helping his wife, turning toward Vanessa first.
The board members watched in grim silence.
Robert Hale took off his glasses.
“Mr. Carter,” he said, “under the company charter, the board is voting to suspend you immediately pending investigation.”
Daniel sat back.
“You can’t do that.”
“We can,” Robert said. “And we are.”
Marcus Reed was suspended as well.
Vanessa’s corporate access was terminated.
Then Rachel delivered the final blow.
“The court has approved an emergency injunction freezing assets connected to the fraudulent accounts. Mr. Carter and Ms. Brooks are prohibited from transferring property, liquidating investments, or accessing certain financial holdings pending further review.”
Daniel’s eyes moved to Emily.
For the first time, he looked at her not with annoyance.
But with disbelief.
“You planned this,” he said.
Emily held his gaze.
“I hoped I was wrong,” she answered. “But I prepared in case I wasn’t.”
The meeting ended.
Rachel closed her laptop.
Outside the office windows, the city was dark and rainy.
Emily exhaled slowly.
Then her phone rang.
It was Lily’s school.
Emily answered immediately.
But the voice on the other end was not Lily’s teacher.
It was Daniel.
And he was whispering.
“Emily,” he said, “don’t panic. Lily is with me.”
Emily stood frozen.
“What do you mean, she’s with you?”
Daniel took a breath.
“I picked her up.”
“You were not authorized to pick her up today.”
“I’m her father.”
“Where is she?”
He was silent for too long.
Then he said, “We need to talk.”
May you like
The line went dead.
