Chapter 2 - Five Minutes to Fall

Emily Carter did not cry in the parking garage.
Not when she saw clumps of her dark hair caught beneath the collar of her blouse.
Not when she looked into the rearview mirror and saw the jagged, uneven patches Vanessa had hacked away in the executive restroom.
And not when Daniel laughed at her over the phone.
She sat perfectly still behind the wheel of her black sedan, one hand resting on the steering wheel and the other holding her phone.
The emergency injunction had been approved.
Her attorney, Rachel Monroe, had been preparing for this moment for months.
Emily had not planned for Vanessa to attack her. She had not planned to walk into Daniel’s office and find him standing beside another woman wearing his suit jacket like she already owned his life.
But she had planned for Daniel’s betrayal.
Not every detail.
Not the hair.
Not the humiliation.
But the betrayal itself? Yes.
Because two months earlier, Emily had discovered a series of transfers from Daniel’s personal accounts into shell companies she had never heard of. At first, she assumed they were business investments. Daniel had always been secretive about company finances, especially since he became CEO of Carter Freight Systems.
But Emily had once worked in corporate compliance before she stepped back to raise their daughter, Lily.
She knew how to read numbers.
And numbers rarely lied.
The transfers led to an offshore account. The offshore account led to falsified consulting invoices. The invoices led to a hidden executive compensation scheme that Daniel had been running with the company’s CFO, Marcus Reed.
And Vanessa Brooks.
Vanessa had not merely been Daniel’s assistant.
She had been helping him conceal theft.
Millions of dollars had been moved out of Carter Freight Systems under fake contracts, fake vendors, and inflated expenses. Daniel had used company funds to pay for luxury trips, private apartments, jewelry, and a life he thought Emily would never discover.
But Emily had discovered it.
She had gathered evidence quietly.
She had hired a forensic accountant through Rachel’s firm.
And she had waited until she had enough proof to protect herself, Lily, and the company that Daniel’s late father had built.
Because Emily owned thirty-eight percent of Carter Freight.
Daniel owned thirty-two.
The remaining shares belonged to the family trust established by Daniel’s father—whose conditions were very clear.
Any executive proven to have committed fraud, embezzlement, or conduct that endangered the company’s public reputation could be removed immediately.
Daniel had forgotten that detail.
Or perhaps he had never believed Emily would use it.
Her phone buzzed again.
RACHEL: Board members are joining the emergency call. Daniel has not been informed yet. Are you ready?
Emily looked up at Daniel’s glass office tower.
High above the street, lights still glowed in the executive suite.
He was probably back at his desk by now. Maybe Vanessa was beside him. Maybe he was telling her that Emily would calm down, that his wife had always been emotional, that she would come home eventually.
He had always underestimated silence.
Emily typed one word.
EMILY: Ready.
Then she started the car.
At exactly five minutes past her call, Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered while standing beside Vanessa in his office.
“Emily, I told you—I’m not doing this right now.”
A calm male voice replied.
“Mr. Carter, this is Chairman Robert Hale. You are required to join an emergency board meeting immediately.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“The board has received legal notification concerning serious allegations of financial misconduct. You have ten minutes to appear by video conference.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Vanessa, sitting on the edge of his desk, straightened.
“What is it?” she asked.
Daniel held up one hand.
“This is ridiculous,” he said into the phone. “Who made these allegations?”
There was a brief pause.
Then Robert Hale answered.
“Your wife.”
Daniel slowly turned toward the window.
Far below, he saw Emily’s sedan pull away from the curb.
For the first time that day, Daniel Carter felt something cold move through his chest.
May you like
Fear.
