Chapter 6 - THE SON WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Elena did not go alone.
She simply allowed the sender to believe she had.
The meeting location was an abandoned freight office near the Illinois-Wisconsin border. The building sat behind a row of vacant warehouses, its windows covered with rusted metal screens.
Naomi waited two miles away with Detective Morgan and a federal tactical team.
A microphone was secured beneath Elena’s jacket.
Dominic would have forbidden the plan.
Dominic was in federal custody awaiting a detention hearing.
The threatening messages found on a Vale Maritime phone had been sent from a device assigned to Marco Santoro, Dominic’s chief operations officer and oldest friend.
Marco had disappeared.
Richard’s framing operation was deeper than Elena had imagined.
She parked outside the freight office at 6:14 in the morning.
The sky was gray, and freezing rain tapped against the windshield.
A side door opened.
Preston Hale stepped out.
He wore jeans, an expensive coat, and the expression of a boy who had discovered his father’s money could not protect him from fear.
“Leave your phone in the car,” he said.
Elena held up both hands.
“I didn’t bring it.”
He searched her pockets but missed the microphone sewn beneath her collar.
“Where’s Dennis?”
“Inside.”
Elena followed him through the warehouse.
Dennis sat on a folding chair beneath a broken ceiling light. His face was bruised, and one wrist was handcuffed to a metal pipe.
She stopped.
“What happened to him?”
Preston looked away.
“My father’s security people found him first.”
Dennis laughed bitterly.
“You mean your father’s criminals.”
“You worked for him,” Elena said.
Dennis lowered his head.
“I didn’t know what he planned to do to you.”
“You stopped Mia from calling the police.”
“I thought Preston was going to cut your ponytail. Richard said it would humiliate Dominic and make him attack someone.”
“You believed holding down a waitress and cutting off her hair was acceptable?”
“No.”
“But you allowed it.”
Dennis’s eyes filled with tears.
“I owed money. Richard knew. He promised to clear everything.”
Elena felt no sympathy.
Only clarity.
Powerful men rarely carried out cruelty alone.
They required ordinary cowards to open the door.
“Why is Preston helping you?” she asked.
Dennis glanced at him.
“Because Richard is preparing to blame everything on his son.”
Preston walked toward the dirty window.
“My attorneys showed me the draft defense strategy last night. My father plans to say I acted alone, fabricated his messages, bribed Dennis, and arranged the entire assault because I wanted attention.”
“You did arrange the assault.”
“I know.”
The admission was barely audible.
Elena stared at him.
“You held me down.”
“Grant did.”
“You grabbed my hair.”
Preston flinched.
“I know.”
“You laughed while I begged you to stop.”
“I know.”
“Then why should I believe anything you say?”
“Because my father ordered Marco Santoro to plant the threatening messages.”
Elena’s heart beat faster.
“Where is Marco?”
“Richard has him.”
Dennis lifted his head.
“There’s a private rehabilitation facility in Indiana. It belongs to a Hale subsidiary. That’s where they take people until they agree to cooperate.”
Elena forced herself to remain calm.
“Do you have proof?”
Preston removed a flash drive from his pocket.
“My father records every meeting. He says trust is for people without leverage.”
“What’s on it?”
“A conversation between him, Bell, Marco, and me. They discuss your schedule, the clippers, the cameras, Dominic’s arrest, and the acquisition of Vale Maritime.”
“Why do you have it?”
“I copied it from his office.”
“Why now?”
Preston looked at her for the first time.
“Because I heard him tell his attorney that prison might teach me responsibility.”
Elena almost laughed at the ugliness of it.
“You are not doing this because you regret what happened to me.”
“No.”
His honesty surprised her.
“I’m doing it because I’m afraid of my father.”
“That is not courage.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me something that proves you understand what you did.”
Preston looked at the jagged line of her hair.
For once, he had no clever answer.
“I thought the worst thing that could happen was your husband hurting me,” he said. “I never considered what I was doing to you.”
Elena stood silently.
“That’s the truth,” he continued. “You weren’t a person in that room. You were a way to provoke Dominic. A uniform. A target.”
“And now?”
“Now you’re the only person who might stop my father from burying all of us.”
Elena reached for the flash drive.
Preston pulled it back.
“I want a deal.”
“You assaulted me and now you want me to negotiate your freedom?”
“I’ll plead guilty to battery. I’ll testify against my father. But I won’t accept a sentence that ruins my life.”
Dennis laughed.
“You already ruined your life.”
Preston kicked the leg of the chair.
“Shut up.”
Elena stepped between them.
“Give me the drive.”
“Promise you’ll support the deal.”
“No.”
“Then we have nothing to discuss.”
“You misunderstand your position.”
Footsteps sounded outside.
Preston froze.
Elena had not signaled the police.
Someone else had arrived.
A black SUV stopped beyond the warehouse doors.
Dennis began pulling desperately against the handcuff.
“They found us.”
Preston’s face went white.
“How?”
“You used your own car?” Elena asked.
“No.”
The warehouse door opened.
Marco Santoro entered with three men.
He was tall, gray-haired, and dressed in the same dark suit he had worn beside Dominic for fifteen years.
Preston backed away.
“You were supposed to be in Indiana.”
Marco smiled.
“Your father decided you were becoming difficult.”
Elena touched the hidden signal button beneath her sleeve.
Nothing happened.
The device had no reception inside the metal building.
Marco looked at her.
“Mrs. Vale, I am sorry you became involved.”
“You planted the messages.”
“I followed instructions.”
“Dominic trusted you.”
“Dominic trusted too many people after he married you.”
Elena’s chest tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“He started closing the cash businesses. He ended relationships that kept us protected. He wanted respectability.”
“And you wanted the old life.”
“I wanted survival.”
Marco held out his hand to Preston.
“The drive.”
Preston remained still.
Marco sighed.
“Your father said you would make this difficult.”
He reached inside his coat.
Elena stepped forward.
“You cannot make all three of us disappear.”
Marco looked at her almost kindly.
“We don’t need to.”
Sirens erupted outside.
The far doors crashed open.
Federal agents flooded the warehouse.
Marco’s men raised their hands.
Preston dropped to the floor.
Detective Morgan rushed toward Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Agents freed Dennis and recovered the drive.
Marco was handcuffed without resistance.
As he passed Elena, he leaned close enough to whisper.
“Dominic was never Richard’s real target.”
Elena turned.
“What are you talking about?”
Marco smiled.
“The Vale companies belong to whoever controls the trust.”
Naomi approached with a federal agent.
“What trust?”
Elena suddenly remembered the file listing her among the assets Richard intended to control.
Dominic had never discussed a trust.
Marco looked at her.
“You own everything, Mrs. Vale.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“Dominic transferred the controlling shares to you six months ago.”
The warehouse seemed to tilt around her.
May you like
Richard had not provoked Dominic merely to send him to prison.
He had planned to frighten, discredit, and isolate Elena until she signed away an empire she did not know she owned.
