Chapter 5 - THE MAN THEY NEEDED TO BECOME A MONSTER

Dominic read the file three times.
His expression did not change.
That was how Elena knew he was furious.
Naomi closed the laptop.
“We need to give this to Detective Morgan immediately.”
“Not yet,” Dominic said.
Elena turned toward him.
“Why?”
“Because we don’t know who inside the department is working for Bell.”
“That is not a reason to keep evidence from the police.”
“It is a reason not to hand the only copy to them.”
Naomi nodded reluctantly.
“We duplicate it, preserve the metadata, and provide copies simultaneously to the state’s attorney, federal investigators, and Detective Morgan.”
Dominic looked toward the courthouse doors.
“Richard planned this for months.”
“Which means he made mistakes for months,” Elena said.
He studied her.
“You don’t understand what happens next.”
“I understand that you want to handle this the way you handled problems before we met.”
“I want to keep you alive.”
“By doing what?”
Dominic said nothing.
Elena stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
“Richard Hale built his career by buying people before they realized they were for sale. Judges, inspectors, police officers, union officials.”
“And you?”
His gaze held hers.
“I made sure people feared betraying me more than they valued his money.”
The answer landed heavily between them.
Elena had never asked Dominic to pretend he was innocent. She knew the world he had come from. His father had controlled shipping yards through threats and political favors. Dominic had inherited companies built in shadows and spent years pulling parts of them into legitimate business.
But legitimacy was not the same as purity.
Richard understood that.
The public would believe Dominic capable of almost anything because, at different points in his life, he had been.
“This is what Richard wants,” Elena said. “He needs you to become the man everyone already suspects you are.”
“And if I remain restrained while he comes for you?”
“Then we expose him.”
“And if the law fails?”
“Then we expose that too.”
Dominic walked away.
For the first time in their marriage, Elena wondered whether love would be enough to keep him from returning to the life he understood best.
That afternoon, the state’s attorney received a verified copy of the drive.
So did an assistant United States attorney specializing in public corruption.
Detective Morgan met Elena privately at Naomi’s office.
“This is bigger than Preston,” Ava said after reviewing the files. “Hale may have manipulated contract awards, police investigations, and at least two judicial proceedings.”
“What about the plan against Dominic?” Elena asked.
“We need corroboration.”
“Dennis Crowe.”
“If we find him alive.”
The word hung in the room.
Ava continued.
“Dennis used his credit card at a gas station near Rockford on Saturday morning. After that, nothing.”
“Could Richard have taken him?” Elena asked.
“Possibly. He may also be hiding because he participated in the assault.”
Dominic stood beside the window.
“Dennis has a sister in Milwaukee.”
Ava looked at him sharply.
“How do you know that?”
“I know how to find people.”
“This is exactly what concerns me.”
Dominic faced her.
“If my people had found him, we would not be having this conversation.”
Ava closed the folder.
“Your people need to stay away from every witness.”
“They will.”
“Do I have your word?”
“No,” Elena said.
Both of them looked at her.
“You have mine,” she continued. “He won’t interfere.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened, but he did not contradict her.
That evening, Elena received the first threat.
A package waited outside the gates despite the security patrols.
Inside was a pair of electric clippers.
A note had been taped to the box.
NEXT TIME WE FINISH THE JOB.
Dominic ordered the house locked down.
Elena insisted the package go directly to federal investigators.
The following morning, news outlets received photographs of Dominic meeting with a former union enforcer six years earlier. The headlines described the meeting as proof that Elena’s assault had been part of a violent conflict between criminal organizations.
Richard went on television.
“My family has been targeted by a dangerous man,” he said. “My son made a terrible mistake, but the public must understand the larger context. Dominic Vale has used intimidation for decades.”
The interviewer asked about the messages on Preston’s phone.
Richard called them fabricated.
He described Elena as “a willing participant in her husband’s scheme.”
Dominic threw the remote across the library.
It struck the wall and shattered.
Elena flinched.
He saw it.
The anger vanished from his face, replaced by shame.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t throw it at me.”
“That doesn’t mean you should have to watch me lose control.”
Elena approached him.
“I need the truth.”
“You have it.”
“All of it.”
Dominic’s eyes shifted away.
“What did Richard mean when he said you used intimidation for decades?”
“Elena—”
“No. He is going to put your entire life on trial. I cannot defend what I don’t know.”
He sat down.
“My father left me six companies and fourteen enemies. I was twenty-three. I thought fear was the only inheritance that mattered.”
“Did you hurt people?”
“I gave orders that frightened them. I destroyed businesses. I threatened families. I told myself I was protecting what belonged to me.”
Elena’s throat tightened.
“Did you kill anyone?”
“No.”
She searched his face.
“Did you order anyone killed?”
“No.”
“Would other people believe that?”
“Some would not.”
“Then we tell the truth before Richard tells his version.”
Dominic looked at her in disbelief.
“You want me to confess publicly to extortion?”
“I want you to stop letting shame become a weapon other people hold.”
His phone rang.
He answered.
A man spoke rapidly on the other end.
Dominic’s expression changed.
“What happened?” Elena asked.
He ended the call.
“Federal agents are outside my downtown office.”
“For the Hale investigation?”
“No.”
The television screen changed to breaking news.
Video showed agents carrying boxes from Vale Maritime headquarters.
A news anchor reported that Dominic Vale was under investigation for witness intimidation in the Monarch Room case.
Naomi called seconds later.
“They found messages threatening Preston on a phone registered to your company.”
“I sent no messages.”
“I know. But they have a warrant for your arrest.”
Elena stood.
“This is Richard.”
Dominic walked toward the front hall.
“Where are you going?”
“To surrender before they break down our door.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“You don’t decide that.”
He stopped.
For a moment, they stared at each other as husband and wife rather than victim and protector.
Then Dominic nodded.
They walked outside together.
Federal vehicles filled the drive.
Cameras waited beyond the gates.
Dominic placed his hands behind his back as an agent approached.
Elena stood beside him while he was handcuffed.
Richard Hale’s strategy had finally succeeded.
The public saw Dominic Vale being arrested because of what happened at the Monarch Room.
But as the agents led him away, Elena received a text from an unknown number.
I CAN PROVE HE WAS FRAMED.
COME ALONE.

The message included a photograph of Dennis Crowe holding that morning’s newspaper.
Behind him stood Preston Hale.
