THREE MINUTES UNTIL TEN / Chapter 2 / 8

Chapter 2 - NO ONE LEAVES THE ROOM

Richard Hale recovered quickly.

Men like Richard had spent their entire lives turning panic into authority before anyone else noticed they were afraid.

He adjusted the cuffs of his navy suit and walked toward Table Twelve as if arriving late to an inconvenient business meeting.

“What happened here?” he asked.

Preston stood.

“Dad, it was a joke.”

Dominic’s gaze remained fixed on Richard.

“You arrived quickly.”

Richard did not answer him.

Instead, he turned toward Deputy Superintendent Martin Bell, who had entered beside him.

“Martin, I believe some customers became overly excited during a birthday celebration.”

Elena felt Dominic’s body tense beside her.

Bell looked around the dining room. His eyes paused briefly on Elena’s head and then moved away.

“Is anyone seriously injured?”

“I was restrained and assaulted,” Elena said.

Bell glanced at her name tag.

“You’re an employee?”

“My employment ended five minutes ago.”

Richard gave her a thin smile.

“I’m sure emotions are running high. We can discuss compensation privately.”

“No,” Elena said.

Preston stared at her as though he could not understand why she was still speaking.

Richard’s smile hardened.

“Young woman, my son may have made a foolish decision. There is no reason to destroy several lives over something that can be resolved.”

Elena touched the raw skin behind her ear.

“You mean his life.”

“I mean everyone’s.”

Dominic stepped forward.

Elena tightened her fingers around his sleeve.

He stopped.

She knew what every phone in the restaurant was waiting to capture.

Dominic Vale threatening a prominent developer.

Dominic Vale ordering his men to punish a group of rich sons.

Dominic Vale proving every rumor that had followed him for twenty years.

Richard wanted him angry.

That was why he had arrived with a high-ranking police official instead of an ambulance.

“Call 911,” Elena told Thomas Burke.

Bell’s head turned sharply.

“I am the police.”

“You’re a guest of the suspect’s father,” she replied. “I want uniformed officers and paramedics dispatched through the public system.”

A woman near the windows quietly said, “She’s right.”

Another guest lowered her phone and began dialing.

Bell’s face reddened.

Richard approached Elena.

“You should be careful.”

Dominic moved between them.

He did not touch Richard.

He did not raise his voice.

But every man at Table Twelve leaned backward.

“Finish that sentence,” Dominic said.

Richard looked into his eyes.

“Your wife should be careful about turning an unfortunate prank into a public spectacle.”

“The spectacle began when your son switched on the clippers.”

Richard’s attention shifted toward Elena’s necklace.

The diamond ring rested against her torn blouse.

Realization moved across his face.

“This is your wife?”

Dominic said nothing.

Richard looked at Preston.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his expression.

“You assaulted Elena Vale?”

Preston swallowed.

“She said her name was Hayes.”

Elena laughed once, without humor.

“And that made it acceptable?”

“No, I didn’t mean—”

“You thought I had no powerful husband,” she said. “You thought no one important would care.”

Richard grabbed Preston by the arm.

“Stop talking.”

Sirens rose from the street below.

Around the room, guests began hiding their phones.

Elena pointed toward the exits.

“No one deletes anything.”

Richard turned to Bell.

“Handle this.”

Bell moved toward the tables.

“All guests should remain calm. We will need to collect basic information.”

Thomas Burke stepped in front of the main doors.

Richard’s eyebrows lifted.

Thomas looked at Elena.

“Mrs. Vale?”

“Preserve every recording,” she said. “The restaurant security system, elevator cameras, kitchen hallways, all of it.”

Dennis Crowe suddenly moved toward the service corridor.

Mia blocked his path.

“Where are you going?”

“Move.”

“You told me not to call the police.”

Dennis shoved past her.

Thomas pointed at a security officer.

“Stop him.”

Dennis broke into a run.

The officer caught him outside the manager’s office, one hand already gripping the server-room key card.

“What were you trying to do?” Elena asked.

“Nothing.”

“You were running toward the security system.”

Dennis shook his head.

“The cameras haven’t worked in weeks.”

Thomas’s face changed.

“That isn’t true.”

Dennis looked at him.

“They were shut down for maintenance.”

“I reviewed footage this afternoon.”

Richard stepped between them.

“This is becoming absurd.”

“No,” Elena said. “It is becoming evidence.”

Two uniformed Chicago police officers entered with paramedics. Unlike Bell, they did not arrive through Richard Hale’s private entrance.

Officer Camille Brooks approached Elena.

“Ma’am, do you need medical attention?”

“Yes.”

“Can you tell me who assaulted you?”

Elena pointed toward Preston, Grant, and Nolan.

“They held me down. Preston used the clippers. Dennis Crowe watched, refused to intervene, and prevented an employee from calling the police.”

Dennis turned pale.

“That’s a lie.”

Mia raised her hand.

“I saw it.”

Richard looked at her name tag.

“Mia, is it?”

She lowered her hand.

“Yes.”

“I’m sure you’re frightened and confused.”

“I’m not confused.”

Richard smiled coldly.

“Think carefully before you make statements that could affect your future employment.”

Elena saw Mia’s courage falter.

Then Elena stepped beside her.

“She won’t be working for anyone who threatens her.”

The paramedic examined the cut behind Elena’s ear. Another photographed the bruises on her wrist.

Officer Brooks separated Preston and his friends.

Bell protested that the situation should be handled discreetly.

Officer Brooks ignored him.

Dominic stood motionless while Elena gave her statement.

He had spent most of his adult life making decisions for other people. Elena could see how difficult it was for him to let her lead.

But he did.

When the officers asked him what he had witnessed, he told the truth.

“I arrived after the assault.”

“Did you threaten anyone?”

“No.”

“Did any of your employees prevent anyone from leaving?”

“No. Hotel security secured the doors after evidence tampering was suspected.”

Richard watched him carefully.

He had expected a different Dominic Vale.

One who shouted.

One who struck Preston.

One who gave Bell a legal reason to place him in handcuffs.

Dominic understood that now.

He turned toward Richard.

“You wanted me here.”

Richard’s expression remained calm.

“I had no idea your wife worked in this restaurant.”

“That isn’t what he means,” Elena said.

She remembered Richard’s face when he entered.

Not shock.

Recognition.

She looked toward the phones on Table Twelve.

“Officer Brooks, I want Preston’s phone preserved.”

Richard immediately objected.

“You have no authority to take private property without a warrant.”

Preston looked at his father.

“Dad—”

“Be quiet.”

Officer Brooks said, “He can surrender it voluntarily, or we can secure the area while we request judicial authorization.”

Preston held his phone against his chest.

Elena noticed a video call still running on the screen.

The contact name was R.H.

Richard Hale.

Officer Brooks saw it too.

“Were you watching the incident remotely?” she asked.

Richard’s voice became sharp.

“That call began after my son contacted me.”

Preston’s eyes darted between them.

“He called before,” Grant muttered.

Richard turned.

“What?”

Grant had been drinking for three hours. His fear had weakened his loyalty.

“Preston called you when she talked back.”

“Shut up,” Preston said.

“He said you wanted Vale to come.”

The room changed.

Dominic’s expression became unreadable.

Elena looked at Richard.

“You knew who I was.”

Richard shook his head.

“That boy is intoxicated.”

Grant pointed at Preston’s phone.

“It’s in the messages.”

Preston backed away.

His hand moved toward the delete button.

Officer Brooks grabbed his wrist.

The phone slipped from his fingers and hit the marble floor.

The screen remained illuminated.

A message thread was visible.

RICHARD HALE: Make sure she contacts her husband.

PRESTON: How?

RICHARD HALE: Humiliate her. He’ll come angry.

Elena read the next line.

RICHARD HALE: Bell will be waiting.

Richard lunged for the phone.

Dominic stepped between him and the evidence.

For the first time that night, Richard Hale lost control of his face.

“Move,” he hissed.

Dominic stared at him.

“No.”

Officer Brooks picked up the phone and placed it inside an evidence bag.

Richard looked at Bell.

Bell looked away.

Elena understood the truth.

The assault had not begun because Preston hated being embarrassed by a waitress.

May you like

It had begun because Richard Hale needed Dominic Vale to commit a crime in a room filled with cameras.

And when Dominic refused to give him one, Richard’s entire plan began to collapse.
