Chapter 6 - The Trial of Vanessa BrooksSix weeks later, the criminal trial of Vanessa Brooks commenced.

Because of the overwhelming evidence—the 4K security video, the medical reports of my scalp injuries, and the testimony of office witnesses—Vanessa’s legal team had tried desperately to negotiate a plea deal. But the District Attorney, backed by our unwavering stance, refused to offer her a lenient sentence. They wanted to make an example of her.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit. Next to me sat Thomas Vance, who had spent the last month working tirelessly by my side to stabilize the company.
Vanessa was led into the courtroom in bright orange prison scrubs, her hands cuffed to a chain around her waist. Gone was the polished, arrogant mistress who had worn my husband’s suit jacket and sneered at me in his office. Her hair was messy, her face washed out, her eyes sunken with fear and anger.
When she saw me sitting in the audience, looking radiant, composed, and powerful, a flash of pure envy crossed her face.
Her attorney took the floor during sentencing, attempting one last desperate play for sympathy.
"Your Honor," the lawyer argued, "my client was a young, impressionable woman who was groomed and manipulated by her powerful boss, Daniel Carter. She acted out of emotional distress and misguided passion. We ask for probation and community service."
The judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Brenda Lockridge, looked over her glasses at Vanessa. "Ms. Brooks, do you have anything to say before I pass sentence?"
Vanessa stood up, wiping away a dry tear. "Your Honor... I am so sorry. I was tricked by Daniel. He told me his wife was crazy, that they were getting divorced, and that Emily was trying to ruin his life. I just wanted to protect him... I lost my head."
The judge shook her head in disgust. "Ms. Brooks, I have reviewed the security footage. You did not look like a confused victim. You looked like a cruel, calculated bully who took pleasure in degrading another human being inside her own family’s business. Your actions were violent, predatory, and utterly devoid of human decency."
Judge Lockridge picked up her gavel.
"For the charge of felony assault and battery, you are sentenced to three years in state prison. For the charge of grand larceny as an accomplice to corporate fraud, you are sentenced to an additional four years, to be served consecutively. Total sentence: Seven years without eligibility for early parole."
Vanessa’s knees buckled. She let out a piercing, hysterical shriek as the bailiffs grabbed her. "SEVEN YEARS?! NO! DANIEL! THIS IS YOUR FAULT! EMILY, YOU BITCH! YOU DESTROYED MY LIFE!"
She kicked and screamed as she was dragged down the central aisle, her nails scraping against the wooden benches.
I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I simply watched her disappear through the heavy metal doors, closing the chapter on the woman who thought she could take my life, my dignity, and my husband without paying the price.

Thomas leaned over, his voice gentle and warm. "Are you okay, Emily?"
I took a deep breath, looking at him. "I've never been better, Thomas. Now... let's go handle Daniel."
