Chapter 10 - The Happy EndingThe sun was setting over the private coastal estate in Santa Barbara.

The air was filled with the sweet scent of jasmine, ocean salt, and blooming white roses. Soft jazz played from the speakers hidden among the manicured gardens, where fifty of our closest friends, family members, and trusted colleagues gathered beneath a canopy of twinkling fairy lights.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror inside the bridal suite, wearing a magnificent backless silk gown that flowed around me like liquid moonlight. My pixie cut was styled with delicate diamond pins, catching the golden evening light.

Evelyn walked into the room, wearing a gorgeous navy gown, holding a bouquet of white peonies.

"You look stunning, Emily," Evelyn said, her eyes shining with pride. "And I say that as a lawyer who rarely expresses emotional sentiment."

I laughed, hugging her tightly. "Thank you for saving my life, Evelyn."

"You saved your own life, my dear," she corrected softly. "I just filed the paperwork."

A knock sounded at the door, and my brother, David—who had returned from his medical mission abroad to walk me down the aisle—stepped into the room, tears in his eyes. "Ready, big sister?"

"More than ready," I replied.

As the music shifted to a breathtaking string quartet rendition of a classical symphony, the heavy double doors opened onto the garden terrace.

I walked down the white-petal aisle, surrounded by the applause and smiles of people who truly loved and respected me. But my eyes were locked entirely on the man standing at the end of the aisle beneath a floral archway.

Thomas stood there in a tailored black tuxedo, looking at me with so much love, devotion, and reverence that tears overflowed my lashes. Beside him stood his ten-year-old daughter, Lily—a sweet, brilliant girl from his previous marriage who had welcomed me into her heart with open, loving arms.

When David placed my hand in Thomas’s, Thomas leaned down and whispered softly, "You take my breath away, Emily."

"You give me mine back," I whispered in return.

The minister’s voice drifted over us, but the vows we exchanged were our own—built not on grand promises or corporate ambition, but on mutual respect, deep emotional truth, and an unbreakable partnership.

"I promise to honor your strength," Thomas spoke into the microphone, his voice steady and full of emotion. "I promise to stand beside you as your equal, to protect your peace, to cherish your light, and to love you through every storm and every victory."

"I promise to choose you every single day," I answered, placing my ring on his finger. "To build a life of truth, joy, and laughter with you, and to never let the darkness of the past dim the brightness of our future."

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared. "You may kiss the bride."

Thomas pulled me gently into his arms, kissing me with a deep, passionate warmth that echoed through every fiber of my being, while the crowd erupted into thunderous cheer and applause.

Later that evening, as the stars filled the clear night sky, Thomas and I stood on the edge of the ocean cliff, holding hands, watching the waves crash gently against the shore below.

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the French doors behind us. I saw a woman who had been betrayed, abused, and humiliated—and who had risen from the ashes stronger, richer, happier, and more loved than she had ever dreamed possible.

My five minutes had passed three years ago.

And my forever had just begun.
