Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law’s WrathVictoria Carter was a woman who viewed the world as a chessboard and everyone else as disposable pawns.

She was a high-society matriarch who had never approved of me. In her eyes, I was just a "working-class heiress" whose family made their fortune through grease, trucks, and shipping containers, whereas the Carters claimed old-money social status. She had spent seven years making subtle jabs at my wardrobe, my posture, and my inability to produce a grandchild on her schedule.

At 9:00 AM the next morning, I walked into the County Courthouse flanked by Evelyn and two private security guards.

The hallway outside the courtroom was swarming with reporters. Sitting on the wooden bench outside the doors, dressed in a black Chanel suit and wearing pearl earrings, was Victoria Carter. Beside her stood two of the highest-paid defense attorneys in the state.

When Victoria saw me walk up—wearing a sharp ivory pantsuit, my new pixie cut looking sleek and deadly—her eyes narrowed into slits of pure hatred.

She stood up, her diamond rings catching the light, and marched directly toward me. My security guards stepped forward, but I raised a hand, stopping them.

"You vicious, ungrateful little monster," Victoria spat, her voice trembling with aristocratic fury. "Look what you've done to my son! You had him dragged out of his home in handcuffs! You put his face on the news!"

"Good morning, Victoria," I said pleasantly, keeping my hands folded in front of me. "You look well."

"Don't you dare play mind games with me, Emily!" she hissed, leaning closer. "Daniel made a mistake with a tramp from the office! Men make mistakes! It is a wife's duty to handle these matters with grace and discretion, not to destroy a man's entire life and reputation!"

"A mistake?" I let out a soft, dry laugh. "Victoria, your son didn't just sleep with his assistant. He helped her assault me, and he stole seven million dollars from my company. That isn't a mistake. That’s a felony."

"It was his company!" Victoria shouted, attracting the attention of several nearby reporters who began snapping photos. "He built Carter Logistics into a powerhouse! Without Daniel, your father’s little trucking business would have been nothing!"

Evelyn stepped forward, pulling out a document. "Mrs. Carter, under Daniel’s leadership, Carter Logistics' operational margins actually dropped by twelve percent due to excessive executive spending, inflated bonuses, and fraudulent offshore contracts. Mrs. Carter’s father built the infrastructure; your son merely skimmed off the top."

Victoria ignored Evelyn, glaring solely at me. "I am warning you, Emily. If you do not drop these absurd criminal charges and unfreeze Daniel’s assets by the end of the day, I will unleash every resource the Carter family possesses. We will drag your name through the mud. We will tie up your company in litigation for the next decade until you are bankrupt!"

I stepped closer to Victoria, leaning in until I was inches from her face. The scent of her expensive lavender perfume was suffocating, but I didn't flinch.

"Victoria," I whispered softly, so only she could hear. "Where do you think Daniel learned how to set up offshore shell accounts?"

Victoria’s posture stiffened instantly. Her breathing hitched.

"My forensic team didn't just look at Daniel’s accounts," I continued, my voice smooth as silk. "They audited the Carter Family Charitable Foundation—the one you’ve been managing for the past fifteen years. Do you want to take a guess at what we found buried in the 2021 tax returns?"

Victoria’s aristocratic composure completely shattered. The color drained from her face, leaving her rouge looking like paint on a ghost.

"You wouldn't..." she gasped, her voice barely a whisper.

"I haven't handed those files to the IRS yet," I said, offering her a sweet, cold smile. "Because unlike your son, I like to keep my leverage until I truly need it. So here is how this is going to go, Victoria."

I stepped back, smoothing my ivory blazer.

"You are going to take your high-priced lawyers, you are going to walk out of this courthouse, and you are not going to spend a single penny of your family fortune to bail Daniel out. He stays in jail until his trial. If you try to interfere, if you talk to the press, or if you ever step foot near my company again... I will make sure you share a cell right next to him."

Victoria stood frozen, her hand clutching her pearl necklace, unable to utter a single word.

"Have a wonderful day, Mother-in-law," I said, turning on my heel and walking into the courtroom.
