Chapter 7 - THE DAY MIA SAW HER FATHER SURRENDER

Mia did not understand handcuffs.
She understood Elena crying.
That was worse.
Lorenzo stood in the foyer with Detective Shaw and two federal agents.
His shoulder was still bandaged.
Adriano had been taken to another hospital under protection.
Victor Salerno was alive and charged.
Marco had entered cooperation negotiations.
Everything had worked.
And now the bill had arrived.
Mia ran downstairs.
“Daddy!”
Lorenzo turned.
One agent moved.
Lorenzo’s eyes hardened.
“Don’t.”
The man stopped.
Mia reached him.
She looked at the cuffs.
“What’s that?”
Lorenzo crouched as much as the restraints allowed.
“Something police use.”
“Why?”
“Because I have to go with them.”
“No.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Mia grabbed Lorenzo’s jacket.
“No.”
“I’m coming back.”
“When?”
He could not lie.
“I don’t know.”
Her face crumpled.
“You promised.”
He froze.
At the safe room.
At Fulton.
Promises.
He had returned both times.
This one was harder.
“I promised I would try to be someone you could trust.”
Mia started crying.
“I trust you.”
That nearly destroyed him.
Elena knelt beside her.
“Mia.”
“No! Daddy stay.”
Lorenzo looked at Elena.
“I’m sorry.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“I should have done this years ago.”
She understood.
There were victims attached to the Moretti empire.
Businesses extorted.
Men assaulted.
Money laundered.
Judges bribed.
Not everything Lorenzo had done could be justified by saying he had inherited the system.
He had chosen to continue it.
The agents allowed him one minute.
Lorenzo pulled Mia close.
“You know Thomas Daddy?”
She sniffed.
“Yes.”
“He was brave.”
“Yes.”
“He did something hard because he wanted you safe.”
She nodded.
“I have to do something hard too.”
“Why?”
“Because I did bad things before I knew you.”
“Are you bad?”
The question became the most difficult Lorenzo Moretti had ever answered.
“Sometimes I was.”
Mia stared at him.
“Now?”
He looked at Elena.
“I’m trying not to be.”
Mia hugged him again.
“Then try here.”
Elena cried harder.
Lorenzo smiled against Mia’s hair.
“I wish I could.”
He stood.
They took him away.
New York exploded with the story.
LORENZO MORETTI COOPERATES WITH FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
CRIME BOSS TURNS OVER FINANCIAL EMPIRE.
MORETTI TESTIMONY EXPECTED TO ROCK CITY.
Some called him a coward.
Others called him an informant.
Victims called him worse.
Lorenzo did not respond.
His attorneys negotiated.
In exchange for full cooperation, forfeiture of criminal assets, testimony against corrupt officials and Salerno associates, prosecutors offered a reduced sentence.
Still years.
Not months.
Elena visited every week.
Mia was not allowed initially.
That hurt most.
Lorenzo sat behind glass across from Elena.
“You should leave New York.”
“No.”
“Victor has people left.”
“Shaw says we’re protected.”
“Shaw isn’t enough.”
“Your legitimate security company still exists.”
“For now.”
“Adriano is helping.”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
“How is he?”
“Annoying.”
“Normal.”
“He wants to teach Mia Italian curses.”
“I’ll kill him.”
Elena raised one eyebrow.
Lorenzo sighed.
“Poor choice of phrase.”
She smiled.
Then became serious.
“The paternity test came back.”
He went still.
Neither had truly needed one.
The court did.
“And?”
Elena looked at him.
“Ninety-nine point nine nine percent.”
Lorenzo exhaled.
“My daughter.”
“Yes.”
He stared at the glass.
“I missed three years.”
“You did.”
No soft lie.
That was Elena.
“You missed her first steps.”
He lowered his eyes.
“Her first word.”
“What was it?”
“Dog.”
He laughed.
“Of course.”
“She called every animal dog for six months.”
“I missed that.”
“Yes.”
“She hates peas.”
“I know.”
“She loves strawberry ice cream.”
“I know.”
“She sings when she’s scared.”
“I didn’t know.”
Elena leaned toward the glass.
“You can spend your whole sentence counting what you lost.”
He looked at her.
“Or?”
“You can make sure you don’t waste what comes after.”
“What if there isn’t an after for us?”
Her face hardened.
“Do not do that.”
“What?”
“Decide what I’ll choose because you’re scared I’ll leave.”
His father’s lesson again.
Expect abandonment before it happens.
Elena continued.
“I’m not Thomas.”
Lorenzo flinched.
“I know.”
“I loved him.”
“I know.”
“I will always love him.”
“I know.”
“And I love you.”
Lorenzo forgot how to breathe.
Elena seemed surprised she had said it aloud.
Neither moved.
Finally Lorenzo asked, “Why?”
She laughed through tears.
“Terrible response.”
“Sorry.”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s worse.”
“You’re difficult.”
“I know.”
“You scare everyone.”
“Not Mia.”
“No.”
Elena smiled.
“Not me anymore either.”
He touched the glass.
She placed her hand opposite his.
“I love you too.”
Her eyes closed.
For the first time in his life, Lorenzo said those words without wondering how they could be used against him.
His sentencing hearing happened six months later.
Marco testified against Victor and confessed his role in Thomas’s murder.
He received a long sentence.
Victor received life after being convicted on multiple counts including murder conspiracy and kidnapping.
Adriano was cleared of the theft accusations that had driven him underground.
Then Lorenzo stood before the judge.
Victims spoke.
He listened.
One restaurant owner described paying Moretti protection money for eleven years.
A union worker described being beaten after refusing an order.
A widow spoke about her husband’s death.
Lorenzo did not look away.
When his turn came, his attorney handed him prepared remarks.
He did not use them.
“I spent most of my life believing fear was the same thing as respect.”
The courtroom quieted.
“I inherited an organization built by my father. But inheritance is not innocence.”
His attorney lowered his eyes.
“I made choices.”
Lorenzo continued.
“Some harmed people who never threatened me.”
He looked toward Elena.
Mia was not allowed inside but waited elsewhere.
“I cannot undo that by becoming a father.”
His voice tightened.
“I can only admit that becoming one finally forced me to see the difference between protecting people and controlling them.”
The judge sentenced him to five years.
With credit for cooperation and the possibility of earlier supervised release.
Elena cried.
Lorenzo nodded.
Five years was painful.
But Thomas had lost all his years.
Some consequences were supposed to hurt.
As marshals prepared to take him away, Lorenzo looked at Elena.
“Tell Mia something.”
“What?”
“That Daddy kept his promise.”
Elena smiled through tears.
“Which one?”
Lorenzo thought of the little girl walking across a Persian rug.
The first time she called him Daddy.
The promise he had made later.
That he would protect her.
“Tell her I’m becoming someone she doesn’t need protection from.”
Elena’s face broke.
“I’ll tell her.”
May you like
Then Lorenzo Moretti walked away from the empire men had once killed to possess.
And for the first time, losing power felt like freedom.
