Chapter 3 - THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The alarm changed Lorenzo instantly.
One second he was a man discovering he had a daughter.
The next he was the boss everyone feared.
“Marco!”
The door burst open.
“West service entrance,” Marco said. “Old family code.”
“Whose?”
Marco looked at Elena.
Then back at Lorenzo.
“Adriano’s.”
Lorenzo’s jaw locked.
“Where’s Mia?”
“Kitchen with Mrs. Caruso.”
“Move them to the safe room.”
Elena grabbed his arm.
“I’m going with her.”
“Yes.”
She blinked.
She had expected a fight.
Lorenzo pulled a handgun from a locked drawer.
“Marco takes you.”
“What about you?”
He looked toward the hallway.
“I’m going to see who thinks ghosts need access codes.”
Elena stepped in front of him.
“No.”
Lorenzo stared.
She almost laughed from the insanity of what she was doing.
Six months ago, she barely looked at him.
Now she was physically blocking his path.
“If Adriano killed Thomas—”
“We don’t know that.”
“He may be waiting for you.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re walking toward him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lorenzo’s face became unreadable.
“Because men who come into my house looking for my child do not get to choose the meeting place.”
He moved around her.
Elena followed.
“Lorenzo.”
He turned sharply.
“Go to Mia.”
That ended it.
Elena ran.
Lorenzo entered the west corridor with Marco and four men.
Security feeds showed no intruder.
No vehicle.
No forced entry.
Only one opened door.
The old wine cellar entrance.
Lorenzo stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
He remembered Adriano as a boy.
Loud.
Impulsive.
Always fighting.
Their father used to say Lorenzo had the mind and Adriano had the fire.
Together, unbeatable.
Then their father died.
Power passed to Lorenzo.
Adriano smiled at the funeral and disappeared three months later with eight million dollars.
Or that was what Lorenzo had believed.
He raised his weapon.
“Spread out.”
The wine cellar was empty.
Then a phone rang.
Not Lorenzo’s.
An old black phone sat on a shelf.
It had not been connected in years.
It rang again.
Lorenzo approached.
Marco whispered, “Boss.”
Lorenzo picked it up.
“Hello?”
A voice answered.
“You always were too curious.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
Adriano.
Four years disappeared.
“Where are you?”
Adriano laughed.
“Not there.”
“You used your code.”
“I wanted you downstairs.”
Lorenzo’s stomach dropped.
He ran.
“Marco!”
They sprinted upstairs.
The safe-room alarm began screaming.
Elena heard it first.
She was kneeling beside Mia when the lights flashed red.
Mrs. Caruso grabbed the girl.
“What is that?”
Elena looked toward the reinforced door.
Someone entered a code.
Wrong.
Again.
Wrong.
A third attempt.
Correct.
The door unlocked.
Mrs. Caruso went pale.
Only a few people had that combination.
Lorenzo.
Marco.
Two security chiefs.
And one former family member whose credentials Lorenzo had never realized remained buried in an old emergency system.
The door opened.
A man stood outside.
Early thirties.
Dark hair.
Sharp blue-gray eyes.
Elena knew immediately.
Not Lorenzo.
But close enough.
Adriano.
He looked at Mia.
His expression softened.
“So there you are.”
Elena shoved Mia behind her.
“Stay back.”
Adriano smiled.
“You must be Elena.”
“How do you know my name?”
“I know everything about you.”
Mrs. Caruso stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Adriano’s face changed.
“Hello, Teresa.”
Mrs. Caruso whispered, “You’re alive.”
“Disappointing, isn’t it?”
Elena looked around.
No visible weapon.
That did not comfort her.
“What do you want?”
Adriano’s eyes returned to Mia.
“My niece.”
Mia peeked around Elena.
“Who’s that?”
“No one,” Elena said.
Adriano laughed.
“That’s rude.”
He crouched.
“Hi, Mia.”
Elena blocked his view.
“Don’t talk to her.”
“Protective.”
“My husband died because of you.”
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, Adriano looked genuinely surprised.
“Thomas?”
Elena froze.
“You knew him.”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Liar.”
Adriano stood.
“I tried to save him.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
Before he could continue, Lorenzo appeared at the end of the corridor.
Gun raised.
“Step away from them.”
Adriano slowly turned.
The brothers looked at each other for the first time in four years.
Neither smiled.
Lorenzo’s voice dropped.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Adriano lifted them.
“You still point guns before asking questions.”
“You still enter houses uninvited.”
“It was mine once.”
“Not anymore.”
Mia suddenly stepped around Elena.
She stared at Lorenzo.
“Daddy?”
Every adult froze.
Adriano’s head turned slowly.
Then he looked at his brother.
“Oh.”
Lorenzo did not take his eyes off Adriano.
“Mia, stay with Mommy.”
“But—”
“Please.”
She obeyed.
Adriano looked almost amused.
“That explains a lot.”
“Start talking.”
“About what?”
“Thomas Voss.”
Adriano exhaled.
“He came to me fifteen months ago.”
Elena stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
“He didn’t know you.”
“He found me.”
“How?”
“Because he was smart.”
Adriano looked at Lorenzo.
“Smarter than most of your captains.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
“What did he want?”
“Protection.”
“For Mia?”
“Yes.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“He never told me.”
“He was trying not to scare you.”
Her knees weakened.
Lorenzo noticed but didn’t move.
Adriano continued.
“Someone had started asking questions about a woman named Elena Voss and a girl born roughly nine months after Lorenzo disappeared from public view for forty-eight hours.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“I didn’t disappear.”
“You canceled meetings.”
“Who was asking?”
“Victor Salerno.”
The name hit like ice.
Victor Salerno controlled a rival organization in New Jersey.
Older than Lorenzo.
Patient.
Ruthless.
And obsessed with leverage.
Lorenzo whispered, “Why would Victor care?”
Adriano stared at him.
“Because he knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Mia was yours.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“How?”
Adriano looked toward Mrs. Caruso.
Then at Marco.
Then back to Lorenzo.
“Because someone inside this house told him.”
Silence.
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
“That’s what Thomas and I were trying to find.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You said you tried to save him.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is he dead?”
Adriano’s face darkened.
“Because he ignored me.”
“What?”
“I told him to disappear with you and Mia.”
“He would have.”
“No.”
Adriano looked at her.
“He wanted proof first.”
Elena’s tears fell.
“That sounds like him.”
“He found it.”
Lorenzo moved closer.
“What proof?”
Adriano reached slowly into his coat.
Three guns rose immediately.
He stopped.
“Relax.”
“Use two fingers.”
Adriano pulled out a flash drive.
“This.”
Lorenzo did not take it.
“What is it?”
“A recording Thomas made the week before he died.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“Of who?”
“Salerno.”
Adriano looked around the corridor.
“And the person betraying you.”
Lorenzo took the drive.
“Name.”
Adriano smiled sadly.
“If I knew, I wouldn’t have spent four years hiding.”
“You stole eight million dollars.”
“No.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
Adriano continued.
“Our father moved it.”
“What?”
“Through accounts under my name.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew someone in the family was stealing.”
“You expect me to believe Father framed you?”
“I expect you to listen to the recording.”
Lorenzo stared at his brother.
“You disappeared.”
“Because someone tried to kill me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You never contacted me.”
“I couldn’t trust you.”
That hurt.
Lorenzo laughed once.
“My own brother.”
Adriano looked at Mia.
“Apparently we both make mistakes when we’re afraid.”
Lorenzo stiffened.
Elena saw the truth of it.
She had hidden Mia.
Adriano had hidden himself.
Lorenzo had trusted no one.
Different fears.
Same damage.
Marco took the flash drive to the security room.
Ten minutes later, everyone gathered around a monitor.
Thomas’s voice came through first.
Quiet.
Nervous.
“Say it again.”
Victor Salerno answered.
“You think Moretti cares about a maid?”
Elena gripped the edge of the desk.
Thomas replied, “She isn’t his maid.”
“She will be eventually.”
Lorenzo looked at Elena.
Neither understood.
Then another voice entered.
Distorted.
Low.
A voice modifier.
“The child is confirmed.”
Salerno laughed.
“Then we wait.”
“For what?”
“For Lorenzo to find out.”
Elena went cold.
Thomas asked, “Why?”
Salerno’s answer silenced everyone.
“Because you don’t hurt Lorenzo Moretti by killing him.”
Pause.
“You hurt him by giving him something to love first.”
Lorenzo stared at Mia through the glass wall where she sat coloring with Mrs. Caruso.
For the first time, the words his father had taught him returned with terrifying clarity.
Never give anyone something they can use against you.
Mia had become exactly that.
Not because loving her made him weak.
Because men like Salerno believed love could be turned into a weapon.
Then Thomas’s recording continued.
“Who inside the Moretti house gave you this?”
The distorted voice answered.
“Someone Lorenzo would die before suspecting.”
The recording ended.
Marco removed the drive.
Elena whispered, “That’s all?”
Adriano shook his head.
“There was a second file.”
“Was?”
“It was encrypted.”
“Can you open it?”
“I never could.”
Lorenzo stared at the screen.
Then one of the security monitors changed.
A camera showed the estate gates.
A convoy of black SUVs waited outside.
Marco leaned forward.
“No scheduled visitors.”
Lorenzo checked the lead vehicle.
A man stepped out.
Gray hair.
Black overcoat.
Victor Salerno himself.
He looked directly into the gate camera.
Then lifted his phone.
Lorenzo’s phone rang.
He answered.
Victor said one sentence.
May you like
“Congratulations on becoming a father.”
And outside, forty armed men began surrounding the estate.
