Chapter 5 - THE HEIRESS NO ONE KNEW EXISTED

The explanation waited inside a dead man’s trust.

Not Lorenzo’s.

His father’s.

At three in the morning, Adriano finally cracked the encryption protecting Thomas’s second file.

Lorenzo sat beside Elena while Mia slept on the sofa beneath a blanket.

Neither of them had been willing to move her somewhere else.

The file contained scanned legal documents.

A video.

Bank records.

And an amendment to Vittorio Moretti’s will.

Lorenzo read it twice.

Then a third time.

“This can’t be real.”

Adriano leaned against the desk.

“It is.”

Elena looked between them.

“What?”

Lorenzo handed her the document.

She understood almost nothing of the legal language.

“What does it mean?”

Lorenzo stared at sleeping Mia.

“My father created a private holding trust twenty years ago.”

“So?”

“It controls thirty-eight percent of the legitimate Moretti companies.”

Elena’s eyes widened.

“That much?”

“Yes.”

“Who owns it?”

“Technically, no one until specific conditions are met.”

Adriano picked up another page.

“The trust passes to Lorenzo’s first biological child.”

Elena stared.

“Mia?”

“Yes.”

“Why would your father do that?”

Lorenzo knew.

Punishment.

Control.

Legacy.

Vittorio distrusted both sons.

He apparently intended his first grandchild to become the next protected branch of the family wealth.

The trust included real estate, shipping interests, hotels, and legal businesses worth hundreds of millions.

Mia was not simply leverage.

She was the beneficiary.

Elena looked sick.

“I don’t want it.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“It isn’t yours.”

“I don’t want it for her either.”

“That may not be your choice.”

“Of course it is.”

“Legally, perhaps not.”

Elena stood.

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“She’s three.”

“And someday she’ll be eighteen.”

“I don’t care.”

“Elena.”

“I spent three years trying to give her a normal life.”

“So did Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“And he died.”

Silence.

Lorenzo regretted the words immediately.

Elena’s face changed.

“That was cruel.”

“I know.”

She turned away.

He stood.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

It was the second apology she had heard from him in twelve hours.

Apparently becoming a father had broken several long-standing habits at once.

Adriano played the video.

Thomas appeared.

He looked tired.

Older than Elena remembered.

She covered her mouth.

“Tom.”

Thomas stared into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, something happened to me.”

Elena sat down.

Mia slept only feet away.

Thomas continued.

“Elena, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

Her tears began.

“I found out who Mia’s biological father was because someone else found out first.”

Lorenzo watched.

“Victor Salerno approached me.”

Thomas explained.

Victor showed him copies of medical records illegally obtained after Mia’s birth.

Blood type.

Dates.

A photograph of Lorenzo and Elena from the hotel.

“He offered me two million dollars to disappear with Mia.”

Elena whispered, “Why?”

Thomas answered as if hearing her.

“He didn’t want to kill her. He wanted control of the trust.”

Lorenzo understood.

A guardian could potentially control certain assets while Mia was a minor.

Victor wanted custody.

Or practical possession.

Thomas continued.

“I refused.”

His voice shook.

“So he offered me five.”

Elena cried harder.

“I told him to go to hell.”

Lorenzo looked down.

A man he had never met had protected his daughter from men far more powerful than himself.

Thomas continued.

“I contacted Adriano because I thought Lorenzo was part of it.”

Lorenzo flinched.

“He convinced me he wasn’t.”

Adriano looked away.

“After that, I started investigating Marco Bellini. He’s the one feeding information.”

Marco.

Confirmed.

Then Thomas said something unexpected.

“Lorenzo, if you’re watching this, I don’t know you.”

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

“But Mia does.”

He frowned.

Thomas smiled sadly.

“She has one photograph of you.”

Elena turned sharply.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“I kept the hotel picture Elena thought she threw away. Mia found it once and asked who you were.”

Elena looked at Lorenzo.

“I told her you were someone her mother knew before me.”

Thomas’s smile trembled.

“She called you Daddy.”

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

That explained it.

Mia had seen him before.

Not often.

But enough for a toddler’s memory to attach a word.

Thomas looked into the camera.

“I should have been jealous.”

He laughed softly.

“I was, a little.”

Elena covered her face.

“But I raised her. I know who I am to her.”

Thomas became serious.

“And if I die, Lorenzo, I need you to understand something.”

Lorenzo leaned closer.

“She is not property.”

Silence.

“She is not the next Moretti. She is not leverage. She is not an heir before she is a child.”

Lorenzo swallowed.

“If you ever become part of her life, protect the part of her that has nothing to do with your name.”

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Mia turned in her sleep.

“Daddy,” she murmured.

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Thomas Voss had spent the last weeks of his life protecting a child who was not biologically his.

He had died without ever asking Lorenzo for money.

Without demanding recognition.

Without using Mia.

Everything Lorenzo’s world had taught him about men said Thomas should not have existed.

Yet he had.

Elena wiped her eyes.

“He knew I kept the picture.”

“You did?”

“I put it inside a book after you disappeared.”

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“I hated myself for missing you.”

That confession hit harder than any accusation.

Lorenzo stared.

“You missed me?”

“For a while.”

“What changed?”

“I found out what you did for a living.”

“Fair.”

Despite herself, Elena smiled faintly.

Then her face hardened.

“Victor killed Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“We prove it.”

“We will.”

“How?”

Adriano answered.

“Marco.”

They all looked at him.

“If Marco cooperates, he links Victor to Thomas’s murder.”

Lorenzo stood.

“He won’t.”

“Then give him a reason.”

Lorenzo knew one.

Paolo.

Marco’s dead brother.

Years earlier, Lorenzo had ordered Paolo killed based on reports Marco himself delivered.

What if those reports had been manipulated?

He suddenly remembered something.

Vincent Russo.

A name from another era.

Not connected to this story directly, but part of a network of men who had benefited whenever Moretti brothers turned on each other.

Lorenzo opened an archived file.

Paolo Bellini’s betrayal evidence.

He read.

Then stopped.

Adriano saw his face.

“What?”

“The account numbers.”

“What about them?”

“They belong to Salerno shell companies.”

Adriano went still.

Marco believed Lorenzo killed his innocent nineteen-year-old brother.

Maybe Paolo had not betrayed anyone.

Maybe Victor had framed him.

Lorenzo whispered, “Marco spent eight years serving the man who actually killed his brother.”

Elena stared.

“And he doesn’t know.”

“No.”

Mia woke.

She rubbed her eyes.

“Mommy?”

Elena lifted her.

“I’m here.”

Mia looked at Lorenzo.

“You too.”

He smiled faintly.

“Me too.”

She reached for him.

He froze.

Elena saw.

“Take her.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

That made him almost laugh.

“But she wants you.”

Lorenzo lifted Mia carefully.

She curled against his chest with the unquestioning trust only children could give.

His arms tightened around her.

Elena watched.

For three years, she had imagined this moment as a disaster.

Lorenzo discovering the truth.

Taking Mia.

Turning their life into another battlefield.

Instead, he stood holding their daughter as if someone had handed him his own heart.

Mia touched his collar.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Thomas Daddy too.”

Lorenzo’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Mia smiled.

“Two daddies.”

Lorenzo looked at Thomas’s frozen image on the monitor.

“Yeah.”

He kissed Mia’s hair.

“You got lucky.”

At seven that morning, Lorenzo went to see Marco in custody.

He brought one file.

One photograph.

One truth.

Marco sat behind the interview-room table with swollen knuckles.

“You came to kill me?”

“No.”

“Disappointing.”

Lorenzo slid the file across.

Marco opened it.

Read.

Stopped.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

“Paolo’s bank evidence.”

“I’ve seen it.”

“No.”

Lorenzo pointed.

“Look at the originating account.”

Marco read.

His hands began to shake.

“Salerno?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Victor framed Paolo.”

Marco looked up.

“You ordered him killed.”

“Yes.”

“Because of this.”

“Yes.”

“You never verified?”

Lorenzo absorbed the accusation.

“No.”

Marco’s eyes filled with hatred.

“You killed my brother because Salerno forged a bank transfer?”

“Yes.”

Marco stood violently.

Officers moved outside.

Lorenzo didn’t.

“I deserve your hatred.”

Marco laughed brokenly.

“You think admitting it fixes anything?”

“No.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because Victor used your grief to turn you against the wrong man.”

Marco stared.

“You.”

“Yes.”

Silence stretched.

Lorenzo continued.

“He killed Thomas Voss too.”

Marco looked away.

“You helped.”

No response.

“Marco.”

“Yes.”

“Testify.”

Marco laughed.

“Against Victor?”

“Yes.”

“And then what?”

“You face what you did.”

“So do you?”

Lorenzo went still.

Marco leaned forward.

“You want justice now because the dead man protected your daughter.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Marco smiled bitterly.

“What about everyone else’s daughters?”

That question followed Lorenzo all the way home.

For the first time, saving Mia no longer felt like enough.

If he wanted to become the father she deserved, he might have to dismantle the very empire designed to protect her.

And Victor Salerno was about to make that decision for him.

Because while Lorenzo sat across from Marco, Victor’s men abducted Adriano.
