Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

On the massive, thirty-foot high-definition LED screen behind Rodrigo’s podium, the display suddenly flickered from the Salcedo corporate logo to a dark, crisp video feed.

The room held its collective breath.

The video began to play.

In brutal, crystal-clear 4K resolution, the four hundred guests in the ballroom watched the events aboard La Reina del Pacífico unfold.

The audio track—restored and amplified by Gabriel’s software—boomed through the ballroom speakers:

"Don’t make a scene, Mariana. One less child won’t sink this family."

Rodrigo’s recorded voice echoed off the marble walls, cold, cruel, and monstrously clear.

On screen, the audience watched in horror as Teresa’s hand shoved six-year-old Nico off the stern railing into the dark, churning ocean. They saw Rodrigo grip Mariana’s wrist, pinning her down while she screamed for her child. They watched Teresa deliver the vicious shove that sent Mariana falling into the sea. And they watched the luxury yacht speed away into the darkness, leaving a mother and child to drown.

Complete, suffocating silence fell over the grand ballroom.

Teresa buried her face in her hands, letting out a horrific, strangled shriek of terror as she realized her life was over.

Claudia staggered back, clutching her pearls, sobbing hysterically as guests turned to stare at her with utter revulsion.

Mateo Alva looked at Claudia with absolute disgust. He slowly pulled off his engagement ring, dropped it onto the marble floor at her feet, and walked away, followed by his entire family.

Rodrigo stood at the podium, trembling violently, his face pale as chalk, staring up at the screen where his own monstrous voice was still playing on a loop.

"It’s... it’s a deepfake!" Rodrigo stammered frantically into the microphone, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "It’s a computer generation! I am Rodrigo Salcedo! I am a respected man! You cannot believe this!"

Mariana walked slowly up the stairs of the stage, stopping just three feet from her father.

"The Federal Prosecutor doesn't need to believe it, Rodrigo," Mariana said quietly, her voice cold and unwavering. "Because fifteen minutes ago, federal agents raided your private offices in Puerto Vallarta. They recovered your offshore bank records, your contract with Hector Ruiz, and the financial trail proving you attempted to liquidate Nico’s legal trust."

The Federal Prosecutor stepped onto the stage, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Rodrigo Salcedo, Teresa Salcedo, and Claudia Salcedo," the prosecutor announced loudly into the microphone. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, and multi-million-dollar financial fraud."

Federal officers swarmed the stage.

Teresa screamed and fought as iron handcuffs clicked around her wrists, her ruby dress rumpled and ruined. Claudia collapsed to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably as she was lifted away by officers in front of dozens of flashing news cameras.

Rodrigo stood motionless as the cold steel locked around his wrists. He looked at Mariana, his eyes filled with a terrifying mixture of defeat, rage, and shock.

"You destroyed this family, Mariana," Rodrigo spat, his voice trembling.

Mariana looked at the man who had tried to erase her and her child from the earth, her expression calm, peaceful, and entirely free of fear.

"No, Rodrigo," Mariana replied softly. "You destroyed this family the moment you put a price tag on a child's life."

As the police led the disgraced Salcedo family out of the ballroom through a gauntlet of flashing cameras and shouting reporters, the crowd watched in silent awe.

Mariana turned away from the stage and walked out of the ballroom, stepping into the warm night air of the terrace.

Standing near the fountain in the garden was Gabriel, holding little Nico in his arms.

When Nico saw his mother, his face lit up with a brilliant, happy smile. "Mommy!"

Mariana ran down the stone steps, throwing her arms around both of them, pulling her son close against her heart, smelling the fresh ocean breeze, and knowing that the nightmare was finally over.
