Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

The Grand Velas Resort in Riviera Nayarit was a sprawling palace of white marble, towering palm trees, and oceanfront elegance.

On Tuesday night, the grand ballroom was bathed in shimmering golden light. Over four hundred high-profile guests—foreign ambassadors, billionaire investors, Mexican federal senators, and international journalists—mingled over crystal flutes of Dom Pérignon champagne.

At the center of the room stood Rodrigo Salcedo, looking like a king victorious. Beside him, Teresa glowed in a ruby-red gown, her neck adorned with millions of dollars in diamonds. Claudia stood next to her handsome fiancé, Mateo Alva, though Mateo looked distant, his dark eyes constantly scanning the crowd with deep suspicion.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Rodrigo announced, stepping up to the microphone on the grand stage, his voice echoing through the massive ballroom. "Thank you all for joining us tonight for the 25th Annual Salcedo Maritime Foundation Gala!"

The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.

"Tonight is not only a celebration of our company’s continued growth," Rodrigo continued, flashing a charismatic smile for the flashing press cameras, "but a celebration of family. As many of you know, my youngest daughter, Claudia, will soon unite our family with the honorable Alva family."

Mateo stood motionless, refusing to smile for the photographers.

"Before we present tonight's charity auction," Rodrigo said, his voice taking on a carefully rehearsed tone of solemn sadness, "I must address a personal heartbreak. As many of you have read in the press, my eldest daughter, Mariana, suffered a tragic psychological collapse last week aboard our family yacht..."

Teresa dabbed her eyes with a lace handkerchief on cue.

"It breaks a father's heart," Rodrigo sighed dramatically into the microphone, "to see a child succumb to mental illness. But I assure you all, our family is funding her full recovery at a premier private medical facility. We ask for your continued prayers for her healing."

A polite, sympathetic murmur rippled through the audience.

"Isn't that a lovely story, Father?"

A sharp, clear, feminine voice echoed through the high-powered speaker system, cutting through the murmurs like a steel blade.

The entire ballroom fell dead silent.

Rodrigo froze at the podium, his smile turning rigid.

At the back of the grand ballroom, the heavy carved mahogany doors swung open.

Mariana Salcedo stepped into the light.

She wore a simple, elegant navy-blue dress, her dark hair pulled back neatly, her head held high with absolute, regal confidence. She looked radiant, powerful, and undeniably sane. Beside her walked Gabriel Vance, carrying a slim leather case, accompanied by six armed officers from the Mexican Federal Special Prosecutor's Office.

Gasps erupted across the room. Cameras flashed wildly as journalists surged forward.

"Mariana?!" Teresa gasped, her face draining of all color.

Rodrigo’s eyes bulged with rage, but he quickly forced a smile, pointing at her from the stage. "Security! Remove her immediately! My poor daughter has escaped her medical facility—"

"I didn't escape anywhere, Rodrigo," Mariana declared, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room as she walked down the center aisle, her eyes locked onto her father. "Because I was never sick. And I was never in a facility."

"Get her out of here!" Rodrigo screamed at Hector Ruiz and his security team.

Before Hector could take two steps, the Federal Prosecutor stepped forward, holding up a high-level federal warrant. "Touch her, and you will be arrested for obstruction of federal justice, Mr. Ruiz. Step back!"

Rodrigo gripped the sides of the podium, his knuckles turning white. "This is an outrage! This is a private event! You have no right—"

"I have every right," Mariana interrupted, stopping at the base of the stage. She turned to face the four hundred shocked guests, including the entire Alva family. "My father just told you a story about a loving family trying to heal a sick daughter. Now, let me show you the truth."

Mariana looked up at the tech booth near the ceiling, where Gabriel had already overridden the resort's media server.
