Chapter 3 - Hunted in the Shadows

By nightfall, the quiet hospital was no longer safe.

Gabriel’s encrypted phone buzzed with an emergency alert. A black SUV with tinted windows had just pulled into the hospital parking lot, followed by two local police cruisers. Rodrigo Salcedo was moving fast, using his legal influence to execute an emergency psychiatric transfer order for Mariana.

"We have to move. Now," Gabriel said, snapping his laptop shut.

Mariana didn't hesitate. She wrapped Nico in a warm fleece jacket Gabriel had brought, lifting the sleepy boy into her arms. They slipped through the service kitchen, down the laundry chute stairs, and out into the drenched alleyway behind the hospital just as three armed men in suits kicked open the door to her hospital room upstairs.

Gabriel’s beaten-up Ford pickup truck was waiting in the darkness. They scrambled inside, the tires spraying gravel as Gabriel tore down the dark backroads of Puerto Vallarta toward the mountain town of San Sebastián.

"Where are we going?" Mariana asked, keeping her head low as police sirens wailed in the distance.

"A safehouse," Gabriel replied, navigating the winding, rain-slicked mountain curves with expert ease. "My uncle owns an old coffee plantation up in the hills. No cell towers, no satellite tracking. We stay off the grid while we set the chessboard."

In the backseat, Nico clung to Mariana’s waist. "Mommy... are we going home?"

Mariana kissed the top of his damp head, smelling the sweet scent of his baby shampoo. "No, my sweet boy. We are going to build a new home. But first, we have to make sure the bad people can never hurt us again."

For the next four days, hidden deep within the mist-covered mountains of San Sebastián, Mariana, Gabriel, and Nico worked tirelessly.

While Nico played with wooden blocks on the brick floor of the hacienda, Gabriel tapped into high-level media networks across Latin America and the United States. Mariana, utilizing her background in corporate public relations—a skill her father had forced her to abandon years ago—crafted a precise, devastating media strategy.

"Rodrigo’s weakness isn't just money," Mariana explained one night, pointing at a map of the Salcedo corporate network laid out on the wooden table. "It’s his pride. He lives for public approval. Next Tuesday is the annual Salcedo Maritime Gala at the Grand Velas Resort. It’s where Claudia’s engagement to Mateo Alva will be officially announced to the international press. Every billionaire, politician, and news anchor in the country will be in that ballroom."

Gabriel grinned. "A live stage."

"Exactly," Mariana said, her eyes flashing in the firelight. "Rodrigo spent his whole life building an image of a god. I am going to tear down his temple right in front of his worshippers."

Suddenly, the shortwave radio on Gabriel’s desk crackled with static. A frantic voice broke through the speaker—it was Tomas, the humble fisherman from Sayulita who had pulled Mariana and Nico out of the water four nights ago.

"Mariana! Gabriel! Are you there?" Tomas’s voice trembled with fear.

Gabriel grabbed the microphone. "Tomas! What’s going on?"

"They came to my docks!" Tomas sobbed over the static. "Rodrigo’s men... they burned my fishing boat! They threatened my family, asking where you were! They know Gabriel helped you escape the hospital! They are tracing his old vehicle registration!"

Before Gabriel could answer, the roaring sound of heavy engines echoed through the valley outside the hacienda. Bright headlights sliced through the foggy mountain night, illuminating the front windows of the coffee plantation.

Mariana grabbed Nico, pulling him behind the thick oak desk.

"They found us," Gabriel whispered, drawing a 9mm pistol from his jacket. "Rodrigo’s private security."

Through the window, Mariana saw three black armored vehicles screech to a halt in the courtyard. Armed men in tactical gear stepped out into the rain, led by none other than Hector Ruiz—Rodrigo’s chief of security, a ruthless former cartel enforcer.

Hector pulled a megaphone from his belt, his sinister voice booming across the courtyard:

"Mariana Salcedo! We know you are in there! Come out with the boy, or we burn this building to the ground with everyone inside!"
