Chapter 6 - The Edge of the Roof

Caleb found an exterior fire ladder on the eastern side of the building.

The state investigator ordered me to remain on the ground.

I ignored him.

By the time I reached the roof, smoke rolled across the tar surface in thick black clouds.

Rachel stood near the center with both hands raised.

Vanessa was twenty feet away, holding Noah against her chest.

The edge of the roof was directly behind her.

“Stay back,” Vanessa warned.

Noah was crying.

Rachel’s entire body shook, but her voice remained calm.

“He’s frightened. Let me hold him.”

“You always get everything.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Dad loved you more.”

Rachel stared at her sister.

“He criticized everything I did.”

“He noticed you. That was more than he gave me.”

Vanessa’s hair whipped across her face in the wind.

She looked less like a calculating criminal now and more like a terrified child who had allowed jealousy to become something monstrous.

“I spent my whole life preparing to run his company,” she said. “Then he put everything in the hands of a baby.”

“You didn’t need the company to prove your worth.”

“Easy for you to say. You had a husband who loved you. You were going to have a child. You could walk away from the family and still have a life.”

“You could have built one too.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mother said this was the only way.”

Gloria appeared behind me.

“Vanessa, come away from the edge.”

Her daughter looked at her.

“You said no one would be hurt.”

Gloria’s face hardened.

“Give me the baby.”

“You promised he would be mine.”

“He will be, once the documents are signed.”

“No. You’ll control him the way you controlled us.”

Rachel took another step.

Vanessa backed away.

The heel of her shoe slipped on the wet roof.

Noah’s blanket shifted.

For a horrifying second, his small body slid from her arms.

Rachel lunged.

She caught the blanket.

Vanessa grabbed Rachel’s wrist.

All three of them fell near the edge.

Daniel came through the rooftop door with Marcus and two officers behind him.

His psychiatric hold had been canceled after the investigator presented Gloria’s recorded confession.

Daniel threw himself to the ground and seized Rachel’s arm.

Caleb grabbed Vanessa.

Together, they pulled both women and the baby away from the edge.

Rachel held Noah against her heart.

She kissed his forehead again and again.

“I’m here,” she sobbed. “Mommy’s here.”

Daniel wrapped both of them in his arms.

Vanessa remained on the ground.

Caleb knelt beside her but did not touch her.

“Was any of our marriage real?” he asked.

Vanessa looked away.

Police placed handcuffs around her wrists.

Gloria attempted to walk toward the stairwell.

I blocked her path.

“You should be grateful,” she said. “Your grandson will inherit everything.”

“He almost died because of that inheritance.”

“Power always has a cost.”

“No,” I replied. “People like you simply force others to pay it.”

Gloria was arrested beside her daughter.

Firefighters evacuated every infant and mother from the building.

The records room was badly damaged, but investigators recovered several hard drives from a fireproof safe.

Administrator Sloan attempted to leave the country that night.

He was arrested at the airport.

Noah was taken to the hospital for examination.

Doctors found signs of dehydration and a respiratory infection caused by the smoke.

He was admitted to neonatal intensive care.

Rachel refused to leave his side.

Daniel stood beside her, holding Noah’s tiny hand through the opening in the incubator.

Ava and Eli were placed in a nearby room.

Eli was healthy.

Ava was not.

The prolonged sedation had caused a dangerous infection in her bloodstream. Doctors began treatment immediately.

That evening, I found Rachel sitting alone in the chapel.

“You should be with Noah,” I said.

“Daniel is there.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I love Eli.”

“I know.”

“I know he belongs with Ava. I would never take him from her. But when he cries, my arms still ache for him.”

“You became his mother during the worst hours of his life. That love does not disappear because the truth changed.”

Rachel wiped her tears.

“What happens now?”

“We learn how to love people without owning them.”

Three days later, Noah’s condition improved.

The independent DNA results were accepted by the court. His identity was legally restored as Noah Daniel Hale.

The Caldwell trust was frozen pending a criminal investigation.

Vanessa, Gloria, Sloan, and six others faced charges involving kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, conspiracy, and illegal adoption trafficking.

But our relief did not last.

I entered Ava’s hospital room the following morning and found her bed empty.

The IV line lay on the floor.

Eli’s crib was empty too.

A folded letter rested on the pillow.

You saved my baby, but people like the Caldwells will never stop looking for us. I have to disappear before they decide I know too much. Please tell Rachel I’m sorry.

Rachel read the letter twice.

Then she looked at the security camera above the hospital door.

“Ava didn’t write this willingly,” she said.

“How do you know?”

Rachel held up the paper.

“Ava always spells Eli’s name with a heart above the i.”

The handwriting looked like hers.

The message did not.

Someone connected to the trafficking network had taken Ava and Eli.

And according to the hallway camera, the person who escorted them out was Nurse Maya.
