Chapter 5 - The House Beyond the Pines

I did not go alone.

I simply made certain Gloria believed I had.

Marcus contacted a state investigator he trusted. Caleb provided building plans for the abandoned wellness retreat. Maya packed medical supplies in case any of the infants required emergency care.

Rachel and Ava refused to remain behind.

“They are our children,” Rachel said. “We are going.”

The retreat stood beyond twenty acres of pine forest, hidden from the highway by stone walls.

Most of the windows were dark.

One light glowed on the second floor.

I drove my car through the main gate while the others waited in unmarked vehicles half a mile away.

Gloria met me inside the lobby.

She wore a dark blue dress and held a glass of wine, as though we were attending a business dinner.

“You look exhausted, Margaret.”

“Where are the babies?”

“You were always direct. Henry respected that about you.”

“Henry was a cruel man who turned his daughters into competitors.”

Her smile tightened.

“He built an empire.”

“And you helped destroy your family to keep it.”

Gloria led me into a former therapy room.

Ava’s baby slept inside a portable crib.

I rushed toward him.

A security guard blocked my path.

“He has no name,” Gloria said. “The adoption paperwork was never completed.”

“His mother named him Eli.”

Gloria shrugged.

“Names can be changed.”

I wanted to strike her.

Instead, I studied the room.

One guard near the entrance.

A second beside the rear hallway.

A camera above the door.

“You asked me to come,” I said. “What do you want?”

“Daniel must sign away all claims connected to the Caldwell trust. Rachel must publicly acknowledge Vanessa as the mother of Henry Caldwell’s first grandson.”

“And Eli?”

“He will be placed with a suitable family.”

“What about the baby girl in the photograph?”

Gloria’s expression barely changed.

“That does not concern you.”

“It concerns me if you are stealing children.”

“You are being dramatic.”

A cry came from somewhere above us.

Then another answered.

There were several babies inside the building.

The private adoption agency was not merely part of Vanessa’s plan.

It was an illegal infant-trafficking operation protected by Caldwell hospitals.

Gloria had used it to obtain substitute children, falsify records, and pressure vulnerable mothers.

“You’ve done this before,” I whispered.

She lifted her wineglass.

“Some women cannot care for the children they produce. Other families can provide everything. We simply eliminate unnecessary delays.”

“You drugged Ava and stole her son.”

“She had already accepted our money.”

“She changed her mind.”

“Poor people change their minds when they believe it will increase the payment.”

Ava heard every word through the recording device hidden beneath my collar.

The state investigator now had enough for a warrant.

But we still needed the children alive.

I moved closer to Eli’s crib.

The guard raised one hand.

Gloria stopped him.

“Let her hold the child.”

I lifted Eli carefully.

He smelled like baby soap and warm milk.

His eyes opened.

For days, Rachel had cared for him as her own. Ava had carried him for nine months.

Two mothers loved him.

Gloria saw only a bargaining tool.

A sudden alarm rang through the building.

The state investigator had cut the exterior power, triggering the backup system.

The lights flickered.

I dropped to the floor with Eli in my arms.

The side door burst open.

Caleb tackled the nearest guard.

Maya ran toward me.

Rachel and Ava followed the officers upstairs.

Gloria shouted for someone to move the babies.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase holding my grandson.

“You ruined everything!” she screamed.

Rachel froze.

“Give me my son.”

“He is my son now.”

Vanessa ran into the upper corridor.

Rachel chased her.

I handed Eli to Ava.

The young mother clutched him against her chest and collapsed against the wall, crying his name repeatedly.

Maya and I followed Rachel upstairs.

We passed three rooms containing newborns and frightened young women.

Some had been told their babies died.

Others had been pressured into illegal adoptions.

At the far end of the corridor, smoke appeared beneath a locked door.

One of the guards had set fire to the records room.

Flames spread through the old ventilation system.

The building’s fire alarms had been disabled.

Vanessa reached the rooftop access door with Rachel only steps behind her.

Gloria grabbed my arm.

“Stop them! The child could fall!”

For the first time, fear appeared on her face.

Not fear for Noah.

Fear that her plan was collapsing.

The ceiling cracked above us.

Burning debris crashed into the corridor, separating Rachel from the stairs.

“Mom!” she screamed.

Maya pulled me backward as flames climbed the walls.

Through the smoke, I saw Vanessa push open the rooftop door with Noah in her arms.

Then Rachel disappeared after her.

A section of the ceiling collapsed.

The hallway became a wall of fire.

May you like

And I realized my daughter-in-law was trapped on the roof with the woman who had stolen her child.
