Chapter 4 - The Child with No Name

I ran toward the stairwell while Rachel screamed through the phone.
By the time I reached the parking garage, her car was empty.
Broken glass covered the passenger seat.
Rachel stood beside the open door with blood running down her forearm.
“They took him,” she sobbed. “A man in a hospital uniform reached through the window. I fought him, but another man grabbed me from behind.”
“Did you see where they went?”
She pointed toward the exit ramp.
“A black van.”
Caleb contacted the police, but Administrator Sloan had already shaped the story.
According to hospital security, Daniel had become emotionally unstable after his son’s birth. I was described as an interfering relative. Rachel was supposedly suffering from postpartum confusion.
Vanessa was presented as the concerned sister protecting her own newborn.
Daniel was taken into custody.
Ava remained confined to the recovery wing until Maya threatened to stream a live video of her condition. Sloan finally allowed her to be transported to another hospital.
By evening, the story had reached the media.
FATHER ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTED NEWBORN ABDUCTION
Vanessa stood beside Sloan during a press conference. She held my biological grandson and called him Owen Caldwell.
“We ask for privacy,” she told reporters, “while my family recovers from this frightening event.”
Caleb watched the broadcast from my motel room.
He had removed his wedding ring.
“She told me our baby was conceived through fertility treatment,” he said. “I never saw the clinic records. I trusted her.”
Rachel sat beside Ava on the second bed.
Neither woman spoke much.
Rachel had lost the child she had delivered.
Ava had lost the child she had chosen to keep.
And both babies were controlled by the same people.
Daniel’s attorney, Marcus Reed, arrived shortly after midnight.
He had represented my late husband’s construction company and owed our family no favors, which was precisely why I trusted him.
“The kidnapping charge against Daniel is weak,” Marcus said. “But Sloan has arranged a seventy-two-hour psychiatric hold.”
“Can you stop it?”
“I can challenge it tomorrow. Tonight, we need evidence.”
Maya inserted the flash drive into her computer.
The clips proved Vanessa had not given birth that morning, but they did not prove the baby was Rachel’s.
“The hospital laboratory will falsify any DNA test,” Caleb said.
“Then we use an independent lab,” I replied.
“We need a sample.”
Rachel looked down at her hospital bracelet.
“I kissed his head. There may be hair on my gown.”
We searched through the bag containing her clothing.
Near the collar of her nightgown, Maya found three tiny dark hairs.
Caleb also had a bottle Vanessa claimed Owen had used. We collected residue from the nipple.
Marcus delivered both samples to a forensic laboratory outside the Caldwell network.
While we waited, I examined the security footage again.
At 5:03 that morning, after the infant switch, Sloan entered his office with a woman wearing a red coat.
I enlarged the image.
Rachel gasped.
“That’s my mother.”
Gloria Caldwell had told everyone she was attending a charity conference in Europe.
Instead, she had been inside the hospital during the abduction.
Rachel called her.
Gloria answered on the second ring.
“My dear, you should be resting.”
“Where are you?”
“In Geneva.”
“You were at the hospital.”
Silence.
Then Gloria sighed.
“Your sister has always been more practical than you.”
Rachel’s face hardened.
“You helped her steal my son.”
“I protected your father’s legacy.”
“My baby is not a company.”
“No, but he controls one.”
Gloria explained that Henry Caldwell never trusted Daniel. He considered my son too ordinary to control the family empire.
Henry’s will transferred fifty-one percent of the company to the first grandson, but the child’s legal guardian would exercise voting power until he turned twenty-five.
If Rachel’s baby remained hers, Daniel would eventually control the company.
If Vanessa claimed the child, Gloria and Vanessa would control it.
“What happened to Vanessa’s pregnancy?” Rachel asked.
“There was no viable pregnancy.”
Gloria’s voice remained emotionless.
“Your sister lost the baby at eleven weeks. We concealed it until another solution became available.”
“You mean my son.”
“You were never interested in the company. Vanessa was.”
Rachel ended the call and immediately began crying.
Marcus had recorded everything.
It was powerful evidence, but Gloria had not revealed where the babies were.
Ava suddenly sat upright.
“The black van,” she said. “The adoption agency used one just like it.”
She remembered being taken to a private house outside the city for prenatal examinations. The windows were covered, but she had seen a sign near the entrance.
Caldwell Children’s Wellness Retreat.
Caleb recognized the name.
It was a closed pediatric rehabilitation center two hours north of the city.
Before we could leave, the independent laboratory called.
The hair from Rachel’s gown matched the infant sample from Vanessa’s bottle.
The baby Vanessa called Owen was Rachel and Daniel’s biological son.
The report also showed something unexpected.
A second genetic profile had been detected on the bottle.
Someone had fed another newborn with it recently.
Vanessa was not hiding one stolen infant.
She had two.
My phone vibrated with a message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Ava’s baby lay inside a clear hospital crib. Beside him was another newborn girl wearing an identification band from a different state.
Beneath the picture were seven words:

COME ALONE, OR WE MOVE THEM TONIGHT.
