Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Two months before the wedding, Elena received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was one photograph.
Marco.
Alive.
The date in the corner was three weeks after his supposed death.
Elena stopped breathing.
Adrian found her sitting on the kitchen floor.
“Elena?”
She held up the photograph.
He went still.
“What is that?”
“My husband.”
Adrian took it.
His face changed.
“No.”
“He survived.”
“We saw the body.”
“Did you?”
Adrian looked at her.
He had not.
Identification had come through dental records.
Just like countless convenient deaths in families where people had money and enemies.
Adrian’s security team traced the envelope.
Mailed from Newark.
Security footage showed a man in a baseball cap.
His face turned toward the camera for less than a second.
Marco Rossi.
Older.
Scar across his jaw.
Alive.
Elena shook for an hour.
Mia did not understand.
“Daddy picture?”
“Yes.”
“Daddy heaven.”
Elena could not answer.
Adrian knelt beside her.
“We will find out.”
The next morning, Marco called.
Elena answered on speaker.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then:
“Elena.”
Her knees weakened.
Adrian caught her.
Marco’s voice.
Impossible.
Real.
She began crying.
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You let me tell Mia her father was dead.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that!”
Silence.
Elena covered her mouth.
Marco whispered, “Cecilia arranged the accident. I survived.”
“Then why didn’t you come home?”
“Because Salvatore’s people were waiting at the hospital.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
Marco continued.
“A detective got me out. We staged the identification so they would stop looking.”
“For two years?”
“I had evidence tied to federal investigations.”
“You could have called.”
“They told me if I contacted you, you became part of it.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“I became part of it anyway.”
“I know.”
Adrian stepped closer to the phone.
“Marco.”
Silence.
“Boss.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I didn’t know who I could trust.”
“That cost Elena two years.”
“I know.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Where are you?”
Marco gave an address.
A federal building.
He had entered witness protection unofficially while investigators built cases against Salvatore and Cecilia.
Now that both were in custody, he could surface.
Elena met him that afternoon.
Marco stood behind glass.
Thinner.
Scarred.
Alive.
She walked toward him slowly.
He smiled through tears.
“Hi.”
She slapped him.
He accepted it.
Then she hit his chest twice.
“Two years.”
“I know.”
She slapped him again.
Adrian stood twenty feet away.
He did not interfere.
Finally Elena collapsed against Marco.
Not romantically.
Grief did not know what category it belonged in.
She sobbed.
Marco held her.
“I’m sorry.”
“You were dead.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You were dead.”
“I know.”
Mia met him an hour later.
She stared at him.
Then at Elena.
Then at Adrian.
“This Daddy Marco?”
“Yes.”
“He heaven?”
“No.”
Mia frowned.
“He came back?”
Marco laughed through tears.
“Something like that.”
Mia touched the scar on his jaw.
“Boo-boo.”
“Yes.”
“Did doctor fix?”
“Mostly.”
She hugged him.
Marco closed his eyes.
Adrian looked away.
That night, Elena and Marco spoke alone.
For three hours.
About everything.
The lies.
The fear.
The years apart.
Then Marco said something Elena had not expected.
“You love him.”
She froze.
“Marco.”
“You do.”
She looked away.
He smiled sadly.
“I knew before I saw you together.”
“How?”
“You say his name differently.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I loved you.”
“I know.”
“I still do.”
“I know that too.”
She looked at him.
“But it isn’t the same.”
“No.”
Marco nodded.
“I died in your life.”
“That sounds horrible.”
“But it’s true.”
He rubbed his hands together.
“You mourned me. You rebuilt. I don’t get to walk back in and demand the place I left.”
“You didn’t choose to leave.”
“I chose the life that made leaving necessary.”
That honesty hurt.
Elena whispered, “What do you want?”
“To be Mia’s father.”
“You are.”
“And maybe one day… your friend.”
She cried again.
“You make terrible speeches.”
“I know.”
The next evening, Marco asked to speak with Adrian.
Alone.
They stood on the terrace.
Adrian’s security remained distant.
Marco looked toward the gardens.
“She loves you.”
Adrian said nothing.
“If you hurt her, I’ll kill you.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You’ve spent two years hiding from my relatives.”
Marco smiled.
“I said what I said.”
Adrian almost laughed.
Then Marco’s expression softened.
“Thank you for Mia.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“You did.”
“She loves you.”
Marco looked down.
“I know.”
“That won’t change.”
Marco nodded.
“You really mean that?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the window where Elena held Mia.
“I’m not interested in replacing you.”
Marco’s shoulders loosened.
“Good.”
Adrian continued.
“But I am marrying her.”
Marco smiled.
“Also good.”
“Really?”
“No.”
Adrian actually laughed.
Marco joined him.
Inside, Elena watched both men.
Her dead husband.
Her future husband.
Life had become stranger than anything she would ever have believed.
Then Mia ran outside carrying two bowls of oatmeal.
“One for Daddy Marco.”
Marco accepted his.
“One for Mister Adrian.”
Adrian frowned.
“We have discussed the Mister.”
Mia handed him the spoon.
“Eat.”
Adrian sighed.
Marco stared.
“You let her order you around?”
Adrian took a bite.
“Constantly.”
Marco laughed so hard he almost dropped his bowl.
For the first time, Elena understood that a happy ending did not always mean getting the old life back.
May you like
Sometimes it meant having the courage to build a new one without pretending the past had never happened.
