Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT HIS FAMILY CHOSE SIDES

Cecilia’s arrest split the Moretti family in half.
Salvatore was arrested two days later.
Bianca surrendered after her attorney negotiated immunity on lesser charges in exchange for testimony.
Some relatives blamed Cecilia.
Others blamed Adrian for allowing authorities into family business.
Nobody blamed Elena openly.
Not anymore.
That changed at Rosa Moretti’s seventy-fifth birthday dinner.
Adrian attended with his arm still in a sling.
Elena did not want to go.
“You’re coming.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Your family hates me.”
“Half my family hates everyone.”
“That is not reassuring.”
Mia sat on the bed wearing a red velvet dress.
“I wanna go party.”
Elena looked at her.
“Of course you do.”
Mia held up Mr. Bun.
“He has bow.”
Adrian appeared in the doorway.
Black suit.
No tie.
Shoulder brace hidden beneath the jacket.
His gaze found Elena.
She wore a dark green dress.
Nothing extravagant.
Long sleeves.
Soft fabric.
The first dress she had bought for herself in two years.
Adrian stared.
Elena crossed her arms.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“That was definitely something.”
“You look beautiful.”
Her face warmed.
Mia pointed.
“I said that.”
“You did.”
Elena looked away.
“Let’s just survive dinner.”
The Moretti ballroom held sixty people.
Relatives.
Attorneys.
Business allies.
Older men who had known Adrian’s grandfather.
Women who had known exactly how cruel Cecilia was and said nothing.
When Elena entered beside Adrian, conversation changed.
Not stopped.
Changed.
Whispers.
Glances.
Mia held Adrian’s uninjured hand.
Elena held Mia’s.
A chain.
Rosa Moretti stood near the fireplace.
She opened her arms.
“Mia.”
The toddler ran to her.
Rosa hugged her tightly.
Then looked at Elena.
“I owe you an apology.”
Elena blinked.
“For what?”
“For not seeing what happened in my own house.”
“Mrs. Moretti—”
“Rosa.”
Elena smiled faintly.
Rosa continued.
“I knew Cecilia could be cruel. I told myself ignoring it kept peace.”
Her expression saddened.
“It only made cruelty comfortable.”
Elena understood that better than Rosa knew.
“Thank you.”
Dinner began.
For twenty minutes, nothing happened.
Then Francesca arrived late.
The cousin who once joked Elena needed two uniforms sewn together.
She wore silver.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect smile.
And absolutely no common sense.
She approached Adrian’s table.
“Cousin.”
“Francesca.”
Her eyes moved to Elena.
“So this is official now?”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
Adrian’s expression cooled.
“What?”
“The maid.”
Silence spread through nearby tables.
Francesca smiled.
“I mean, everyone is talking.”
Adrian placed his fork down.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
“Do you want me to handle this?”
The question surprised her.
He was asking.
Not deciding.
Elena smiled.
“No.”
Then she looked at Francesca.
“I will.”
Francesca’s eyebrows lifted.
Elena stood.
“You once told another maid my uniform probably required extra fabric charges.”
Francesca’s smile disappeared.
“You heard that?”
“Yes.”
“I was joking.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice remained calm.
“You were entertaining people by making me smaller.”
Francesca flushed.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You did.”
The room stayed silent.
“But I am not asking you to apologize because Adrian is sitting here.”
Elena looked around the ballroom.
“I want everyone in this family to understand something.”
Adrian watched her.
Mia watched her.
Rosa smiled faintly.
“I worked in this house because I needed income.”
Elena continued.
“That never made me beneath anyone.”
Several staff members stood near the walls.
Listening.
“My body is not a family joke.”
Her voice strengthened.
“My daughter is not leverage.”
“And my kindness is not permission.”
Francesca looked humiliated now.
Good.
Elena sat.
Adrian looked at her.
“Finished?”
“Yes.”
“Excellent.”
He stood.
The entire room focused on him.
“I have something to add.”
Elena sighed.
“Of course.”
Adrian reached into his jacket.
She thought he might make some formal statement.
Instead, he took out a small velvet box.
Her heart stopped.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Adrian.”
Mia gasped.
“Ring!”
Every head in the ballroom turned.
Elena whispered, “You are not doing this here.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
“Because they all need to hear the answer.”
Her heart slammed.
Adrian lowered himself carefully onto one knee despite his injured shoulder.
The room went completely silent.
“Elena Rossi.”
She covered her face.
“You are insane.”
“Possibly.”
Mia bounced beside them.
“Say yes!”
Adrian looked up.
“For years I believed protecting people meant keeping them away from me.”
His voice carried through the ballroom.
“Then your daughter walked into my study and ordered me to eat.”
Soft laughter moved through the room.
“She treated me like a person before she knew enough to be afraid of my name.”
He looked at Elena.
“And you did something harder.”
“What?”
“You made me want to become one.”
Her eyes filled.
“I cannot promise my life will ever be simple.”
“No kidding.”
More laughter.
“I cannot erase what happened to Marco.”
Elena’s smile faded.
“But I can honor him.”
Adrian glanced at Mia.
“And I can love his daughter without pretending she came from anywhere else.”
Tears slipped down Elena’s cheeks.
“I can love you without asking you to shrink.”
That sentence broke her.
Adrian opened the box.
“Marry me.”
Mia whispered loudly, “Open mouth.”
People laughed.
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“You say yes with mouth.”
Elena laughed through tears.
She looked around the ballroom.
At people who once treated her like furniture.
At staff who looked openly proud.
At Rosa crying.
At Francesca staring at the floor.
Then at Adrian.
A man she never expected to understand tenderness.
A man still imperfect.
Still dangerous.
Still learning.
“Yes.”
Mia screamed.
Adrian stood.
Elena kissed him.
The room applauded.
Then Salvatore’s oldest son rose from a far table.
“No.”
Everything stopped.
He was forty-three.
Tall.
Cold.
Named Dante.
Adrian’s second cousin.
He looked furious.
“This family has lost its mind.”
Adrian turned.
“Careful.”
Dante pointed at Elena.
“You’re giving this woman a Moretti name?”
Elena stiffened.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Dante continued.
“A maid.”
Nobody moved.
“A widow of a traitor.”
Adrian’s eyes became ice.
“Mia is not your blood.”
That did it.
Adrian crossed the room.
Fast.
Dante barely had time to stand.
Adrian stopped inches away.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“She isn’t.”
The room waited.
Adrian turned toward Mia.
The toddler was holding Elena’s dress.
He looked back at Dante.
“Blood did not feed me breakfast.”
Silence.
“Blood did not pull my cousin’s crimes into daylight.”
He pointed toward Elena.
“Blood did not crawl through a warehouse to save a child.”
Then Adrian looked around the room.
“You want to know what family is?”
Nobody answered.
“Family is who stays.”
He returned to Elena.
Placed one hand on Mia’s head.
The other around Elena’s waist.
“This woman is mine.”
Elena’s eyebrows shot up.
Adrian immediately corrected himself.
“She has informed me that phrasing is unacceptable.”
Laughter erupted.
Even Elena laughed.
Adrian smiled.
“She is my future wife.”
Then he looked down at Mia.
“And this child is my daughter in every way that matters.”
Mia looked up.
“Can I have cake?”
Adrian sighed.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
May you like
And just like that, the most dramatic declaration in Moretti family history ended because a three-year-old wanted dessert.
