Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of Power

Months passed.

Anthony Moretti went to trial.

Vincent Barone testified against him in exchange for a reduced sentence, revealing every detail of the conspiracy: the bomb, Luca’s murder, the bribed officials, the money moved through shell companies.

The courtroom heard Elena’s name.

Claire’s name.

Luca Romano’s name.

For years, they had been buried beneath silence.

Now they were spoken aloud.

Adrian sat beside Sofia during parts of the trial, though she never asked him to.

She attended the day Luca’s recording was played.

His voice filled the courtroom again.

If anything happens to me, take care of Sofia. Take care of Emma.

Sofia cried quietly.

Adrian reached for her hand.

This time, she let him hold it.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

“Mr. Moretti, are you leaving organized crime?”

“Did you know about your uncle’s involvement?”

“Will you face charges?”

Adrian stopped at the steps.

For the first time in his life, he answered without hiding behind lawyers.

“I spent years believing I could protect people with fear,” he said. “I was wrong. Fear only creates more graves.”

Then he walked away.

The Moretti estate changed too.

The eastern garden was restored.

Not to how it had been before Elena and Claire died.

It became something new.

Sunflowers grew again beside white roses for Elena and small yellow flowers for Claire. Sofia planted lavender near the stone bench. Emma insisted on planting daisies for Daisy.

The first sunflower bloomed in late summer.

Emma ran through the garden screaming with joy.

“They followed heaven!” she shouted.

Adrian watched from the bench.

Sofia sat beside him.

“You remember what Claire used to say,” she said.

“Every word.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You don’t have to punish yourself forever.”

He stared at the flowers.

“I don’t know how to stop.”

“Start by letting yourself live.”

Adrian was quiet for a long time.

Then he asked, “Do you think Luca would hate me?”

Sofia’s eyes softened.

“I think Luca would hate what was done to us.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No,” she said honestly. “It isn’t.”

Adrian nodded.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“I know.”

Sofia turned toward him.

“But I’ve seen what you did when you could have chosen revenge. I’ve seen what you did for Emma.”

Adrian looked at her.

“And?”

“And I think people can choose who they become after the worst thing they’ve done.”

For the first time, she touched his face.

It was a small gesture.

But Adrian closed his eyes as if she had given him something priceless.

That night, he unlocked the dining room.

He had avoided it since Elena and Claire died.

He ordered Rosa to prepare dinner for four.

Sofia protested.

“Mr. Moretti, we can eat in the kitchen.”

“No,” Adrian said. “Not tonight.”

Emma sat in Claire’s old chair by accident.

Everyone froze.

Then Emma looked at Adrian.

“Is this okay?”

His eyes filled.

“Yes,” he said. “It’s perfect.”

They ate pasta, garlic bread, and chocolate cake.

Emma told stories about Daisy.

Sofia laughed.

Adrian laughed too.

The sound startled him.

But it did not hurt.

May you like

Not the way he thought it would.
