Chapter 8 - The River Docks

The warehouse near the Chicago River smelled of gasoline, rust, and old water.

Marcus positioned men around the perimeter, but Adrian gave one order before anyone moved.

“No shooting unless Emma is clear.”

Marcus looked at him sharply.

“That gives them an advantage.”

“She’s three.”

“I know.”

“No bullets near her.”

Marcus nodded.

Inside the warehouse, Anthony stood beside a folding chair.

Emma sat in it, clutching Daisy. Her cheeks were wet with tears, but she was trying not to cry loudly.

Adrian saw her through a broken window.

His entire body went cold.

Anthony noticed him.

“Come in, nephew.”

Adrian entered alone.

“You wanted me,” he said. “Let her go.”

Anthony smiled.

“You always did make the same mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“Thinking love makes you stronger.”

Emma saw Adrian.

“Mr. Moretti!”

Her voice cracked.

Adrian forced himself to stay calm.

“I’m here, Emma.”

“Mommy is scared.”

“I know.”

“Is Daddy with Claire?”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“Can he help us?”

Adrian looked at the little girl.

“He already is.”

Anthony laughed.

“Touching.”

Then he pulled a gun.

“Give me the ledger copies. Call off your people. Tell the prosecutors the evidence is false.”

“And if I don’t?”

Anthony pointed the gun toward Emma.

Adrian’s face turned to stone.

But his voice remained calm.

“You won’t hurt her.”

Anthony’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re sure?”

“I know you. You don’t want her dead. You want me broken.”

Anthony smiled slightly.

“Maybe I want both.”

Before Adrian could move, a voice came from above.

“Then you’ll have neither.”

Sofia.

She stood on a metal catwalk with Marcus beside her.

Anthony spun around.

In that second, Emma kicked the folding chair sideways.

Daisy fell to the ground.

Anthony stumbled.

Adrian crossed the distance like a storm.

The gun fired once.

The bullet struck a steel beam.

Marcus’s men flooded the warehouse.

Anthony fought hard, but age had made him slower. Adrian disarmed him, drove him to the floor, and held him there with one knee against his chest.

Anthony looked up at him, breathing hard.

“Do it,” he whispered. “Become what you are.”

Adrian’s hand tightened around the gun.

For years, killing Anthony would have felt like justice.

For years, Adrian had believed violence was the only language men like Anthony understood.

Then he heard Emma crying.

He looked over.

Sofia had Emma in her arms.

The little girl held Daisy and stared at Adrian with terrified eyes.

“You have to be good,” she whispered.

The warehouse fell silent.

Adrian lowered the gun.

Then he handed it to Marcus.

“Call the police,” he said.

Anthony stared at him in disbelief.

“You’ll regret this.”

“No,” Adrian replied. “You will.”

Anthony Moretti was arrested before sunrise.

The ledger exposed his network. Vincent Barone was captured two days later trying to cross into Canada with false documents and a bag full of cash.

The truth spread through Chicago.

The Moretti name became news.

The victims became headlines.

And for the first time, Adrian did not try to control the story.

He testified.

He surrendered evidence.

He admitted what he knew.

He began dismantling the parts of his empire built on fear.

But none of that mattered as much as the first moment Emma slept through the night again.

She woke the next morning in the estate guest suite.

Adrian sat outside her door in a chair, still wearing yesterday’s clothes.

Emma opened the door a crack.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Yes?”

“Did you find Daisy?”

He held up the patched doll.

Emma smiled.

Then she looked at him seriously.

“Can you stay until Mommy wakes up?”

Adrian nodded.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

May you like

And for once, he meant it.
