Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO CAME FOR HOPPER

Rosa never made it to midnight.
Luca came first.
At 4:06 in the morning, the east wing lost power.
Ten seconds later, the backup generator failed.
Gabriel swore through his radio.
“Manual sabotage.”
Alessandro was already awake.
He had not slept.
Neither had Rosa.
Lily finally had, curled beside the repaired Hopper after one of the seamstresses stitched his side closed.
Alessandro ran toward the family corridor.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Then off.
“Rosa!”
No answer.
He reached her room.
Door open.
Bed empty.
Hopper lay on the carpet.
Lily was gone.
For one second, Alessandro became the man everyone feared.
Every instinct narrowed into violence.
Then something touched his leg.
He looked down.
Lily crawled from beneath the bed.
Her eyes were huge.
Alessandro dropped to his knees.
“Lily.”
She threw herself against him.
He held her.
Then she signed so quickly he struggled to follow.
Scar man took Mommy.
Alessandro went cold.
Where?
Lily pointed toward the window.
Not window.
Wall.
Service passage.
Few people knew the mansion had old servants’ corridors hidden between wings.
Luca knew all of them.
Did he hurt you?
Lily shook her head.
Mommy pushed me under bed. Told me quiet.
Alessandro closed his eyes once.
Rosa had hidden her daughter before Luca took her.
Where Hopper?
Lily pointed at the rabbit.
Alessandro picked it up.
The seam had been cut open again.
The brass capsule was gone.
Luca believed he had the original memory card.
Good.
Gabriel arrived.
“Boss?”
“Rosa’s gone.”
His face hardened.
“Lily?”
“Safe.”
Gabriel touched his earpiece.
“We have a vehicle leaving through the old north maintenance road.”
“Plate?”
“Stolen.”
“Track it.”
“Already.”
Alessandro handed Lily to a trusted female security officer.
Lily refused instantly.
No.
She grabbed Alessandro’s jacket.
He crouched.
I have to bring Mommy home.
Lily’s chin trembled.
You come back too?
The question hit him harder than it should have.
Bianca had once asked him the same thing before he left for a fight at nineteen.
He had returned.
She had died years later.
But the memory remained.
Alessandro signed:
I will do everything I can.
Lily frowned.
Not promise?
He looked at her.
Children deserved promises adults could control.
Not fantasies.
I promise I will not leave because I want to.
Lily thought.
Then nodded.
Good enough.
Alessandro stood.
Gabriel watched.
“You’re not going alone.”
“No.”
“Police?”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
That answer used to be automatic.
Never.
Moretti matters stayed Moretti matters.
Then he looked at Lily.
Miguel had died because a crime was hidden inside a company Alessandro controlled.
Rosa had been handed a coffin and told not to ask questions.
Luca had survived because powerful men handled problems privately.
“No.”
Gabriel frowned.
Alessandro continued.
“I’m not going alone.”
He called Detective Elena Ortiz of the NYPD Organized Crime Task Force.
She had spent seven years trying to build cases around Moretti businesses.
She answered at 4:19.
“Either this is a mistake or hell froze over.”
“Luca Romano kidnapped a woman from my house.”
Silence.
Then her voice became professional.
“Tell me everything.”
Rosa woke in a concrete room.
Her wrists were zip-tied.
Luca sat across from her.
No suit now.
Black shirt.
Gun on the table.
His scar looked deeper under fluorescent light.
“Where’s Lily?”
“Alive.”
Rosa exhaled.
“Where?”
“Not my problem.”
“She wasn’t with you.”
Luca’s expression tightened.
Good.
He didn’t have her.
Rosa held onto that.
Luca placed the brass capsule on the table.
“You’re surprisingly troublesome for a housemaid.”
Rosa laughed despite fear.
“Miguel used to say people make that mistake.”
Luca’s eyes changed.
“He made several mistakes.”
“Did you kill him?”
Luca smiled.
“Straight to it.”
“I’ve waited eighteen months.”
“You buried an empty coffin.”
Rosa went still.
Luca leaned forward.
“They really did tell you the body was inside?”
Her breathing stopped.
“Where is he?”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“The card.”
“You have it.”
“No.”
He opened the capsule.
Empty.
Rosa stared.
Then understood.
Gabriel had copied the card.
The original had remained with her.
But before Luca took her, Rosa had slipped it beneath the insole of Lily’s missing shoe box?
No.
She remembered.
She had given it to Alessandro after all, for the evidence safe, while Luca only took the empty capsule from Hopper.
Rosa almost smiled.
Luca noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
He hit the table.
“Where is the card?”
Rosa flinched.
“Not here.”
His face hardened.
“Who has it?”
She said nothing.
Luca stood.
“You think Alessandro cares enough to trade for you?”
Rosa looked at him.
“I think you care enough about that card to ask.”
He stared.
For the first time, fear appeared behind his anger.
Good.
Rosa continued.
“You poisoned him because you needed him gone.”
Luca smiled.
“Vivian poisoned him.”
“You gave her the bottle.”
His smile disappeared.
“Lily saw you.”
He stepped closer.
“A deaf three-year-old?”
Rosa’s eyes turned cold.
“She sees more than you do.”
He grabbed Rosa’s chair.
“You think this ends with a child’s story?”
“No.”
Rosa leaned closer.
“It ends with Miguel’s.”
Luca shoved away from her.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Yeah.”
Rosa watched his face.
“Bring him.”
Pause.
“Alone.”
He disconnected.
“Alessandro?”
Luca smiled.
“Soon.”
Rosa looked around.
Concrete columns.
Plastic sheeting.
A construction site.
Somewhere outside, a low mechanical vibration passed through the floor.
Not traffic.
Heavy equipment.
Then Rosa saw the window.
Beyond dirty glass, something moved against the predawn sky.
A red crane.
Her heart stopped.
North River Tower.
The unfinished building where Miguel had supposedly fallen.
Of course.
Luca followed her gaze.
“Memories?”
Rosa lowered her eyes quickly.
He did not know she recognized it.
Minutes later, Luca set up a video call.
“Look scared.”
“I am.”
“Good.”
Alessandro’s face appeared on-screen.
He saw Rosa.
His entire expression changed.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Luca stepped behind her.
“Card for Rosa.”
Alessandro said, “Let her go first.”
Luca laughed.
“Still think you’re negotiating.”
While Luca talked, Rosa looked directly into the camera.
She raised her bound hands slightly.
Luca thought she was showing the restraints.
She wasn’t.
Rosa signed.
Red crane.
Alessandro’s eyes changed.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
She continued.
Nine.
River.
North.
Luca never noticed.
Why would he?
To him, hands were hands.
To Alessandro, they were language.
Rosa signed one final word.
Miguel.
Alessandro’s face stayed cold.
“I understand.”
Luca smiled.
“No, you don’t.”
But Rosa knew he did.
At the command vehicle three blocks from North River Tower, Detective Ortiz watched the hostage feed.
“What just happened?”
Alessandro turned.
“She told us where she is.”
“How?”
He looked at the screen.
“Because Luca forgot silence can carry information.”
Gabriel pulled the building plans.
“Ninth floor.”
Ortiz stood.
“Tactical team moves now.”
Alessandro reached for his gun.
Ortiz looked at him.
“No.”
He stared.
“You stay behind the team.”
“That’s Rosa.”
“That is why.”
He almost argued.
Then he remembered Lily’s question.
You come back too?
Alessandro slowly put the gun down.
“Bring her back.”
Ortiz nodded.
“That’s the plan.”
For perhaps the first time in his life, Alessandro Moretti stood still while someone else went into danger for a person he cared about.
May you like
It was unbearable.
It was also the right thing.
