Chapter 2 - THE CHILD WHO SAW TOO MUCH

Lily had followed the light beneath the kitchen door because three-year-olds did not understand that chandeliers belonged to rich people and copper pans belonged to maids.

She slipped into the service corridor unnoticed.

Music vibrated faintly through the marble beneath her bare feet.

That was how Lily experienced parties.

Not through violins.

Through the floor.

Laughter became little tremors.

Footsteps became rhythms.

Doors announced themselves with moving air.

She followed the vibrations until she reached a narrow passage behind the ballroom.

Then she saw the beautiful lady in red.

Vivian.

Lily knew Vivian because Rosa had taught her the names of people she might encounter while working.

Mr. Alessandro.

Mr. Luca.

Miss Vivian.

Do not bother them.

Lily intended to obey.

Then Luca appeared.

He entered the passage from the opposite end.

Vivian looked around.

Lily instinctively moved behind a decorative screen.

The adults did not see her.

Lily watched Luca take something tiny from his jacket.

A glass bottle.

Clear.

Small enough to disappear inside his palm.

Vivian shook her head.

Luca caught her wrist.

His lips moved.

Lily could not hear the words.

But deaf children become experts in faces.

Luca was angry.

Vivian was afraid.

Then he leaned close.

She kissed him.

Not a polite kiss.

Not the kind Rosa gave Lily before bedtime.

The kind Lily had seen two actors perform on television before Rosa covered her eyes and announced that cartoons were better.

Vivian pulled away first.

Luca pressed the bottle into her hand.

Then pointed toward the ballroom.

Vivian closed her fingers around it.

Lily’s stomach felt strange.

She watched Vivian return to the party.

Luca stayed behind.

He touched the scar on his cheek.

Then smiled.

Lily did not like the smile.

She followed Vivian.

By the time Lily reached the edge of the ballroom, Vivian was standing beside Alessandro.

A wineglass rested in his hand.

Vivian’s fingers had just left the stem.

Lily saw the tiny bottle disappear into Vivian’s red evening bag.

Then Alessandro raised the wine.

Lily moved.

She crossed behind chairs.

Under an abandoned coat.

Past a waiter carrying champagne.

Nobody stopped her because nobody important looked down.

Then Alessandro stepped onto the terrace.

Lily followed.

The glass touched his lower lip.

She raised both hands.

Your beautiful fiancée put something bad in your glass.

Alessandro froze.

Poison, Lily signed.

His eyes sharpened.

Twenty years earlier, Alessandro had communicated every day in ASL with his younger sister, Bianca.

Bianca had been born deaf.

Their father considered it an embarrassment.

Alessandro considered Bianca the smartest person in the Moretti family.

She died at seventeen from complications after a car accident.

Alessandro had barely signed since.

Until tonight.

He lowered the glass.

Who showed you that sign? he signed.

Lily blinked.

Then smiled in surprise.

You know talking hands.

Yes.

She pointed inside.

Beautiful lady. Bottle. Scar man gave her.

Alessandro stopped breathing.

Scar man.

There were many scarred men in his world.

Only one had stood beside a marble column tonight with a pale line down his left cheek.

Luca.

Alessandro looked through the terrace windows.

Luca was watching him.

Not openly.

Through the reflection in the glass.

Exactly as Vivian had watched him swallow the first sip.

Alessandro’s stomach tightened.

He had already tasted the wine.

Only a mouthful.

Maybe less.

Enough?

He didn’t know.

Lily signed quickly.

Mommy saw them look at each other.

That was new.

“Rosa?”

Lily nodded.

Vivian knows Mommy saw.

Alessandro crouched.

His body felt normal.

For the moment.

He signed carefully.

Listen to me. You did the right thing.

Lily hugged Hopper tighter.

Is Mommy trouble?

No.

A lie, perhaps.

But not one he intended to allow to become true.

Stay beside me.

Lily nodded.

Alessandro opened the terrace door.

Vivian saw the glass still in his hand.

Relief flashed across her face.

Too quickly to hide.

“There you are.”

She walked toward him.

Then noticed Lily.

Her expression sharpened.

“What is that child doing here?”

Alessandro stared at her.

That child.

Not Rosa’s daughter.

Not Lily.

That child.

“Talking to me.”

Vivian laughed.

“She can’t talk.”

Lily looked up.

Alessandro’s eyes became cold.

“She communicates perfectly.”

Vivian realized her mistake.

“I didn’t mean—”

Alessandro handed the wineglass to a passing waiter.

Vivian moved instantly.

“I thought you were drinking that.”

“I changed my mind.”

Her face barely moved.

Luca approached.

“Everything all right?”

Alessandro looked at his oldest friend.

The man who had taken a bullet for him.

The man who knew the security codes to every Moretti property.

The man who had attended Bianca’s funeral and signed I’m sorry badly because Alessandro once taught him how.

“Fine.”

Luca glanced toward the glass.

“Not drinking?”

“Apparently I’m pale.”

Vivian smiled too brightly.

“You are.”

Alessandro looked at her.

Then deliberately touched his stomach.

“Actually…”

He let his shoulders dip.

Luca moved first.

Not Vivian.

Luca caught his elbow.

“Boss?”

Alessandro leaned into him.

Just enough.

“Dizzy.”

Vivian’s pupils widened.

Luca’s grip tightened.

“We should get you upstairs.”

Not call a doctor.

Not ask what happened.

Get him upstairs.

Alessandro understood.

“Maybe.”

He looked toward the waiter.

The wineglass was already being carried away.

“Gabriel.”

His head of security turned from across the room.

Alessandro rarely used Gabriel Russo’s first name during formal events.

Gabriel recognized the signal.

“Sir?”

“The glass.”

Gabriel looked at the waiter.

“Keep it.”

Vivian’s smile vanished.

Luca stared at Alessandro.

“What for?”

Alessandro straightened.

The weakness disappeared.

Luca’s hand remained on his arm for one second too long.

Alessandro looked down at it.

Luca released him.

Then Alessandro felt something real.

A strange numbness at the back of his tongue.

Heat moved through his chest.

His vision blurred.

Not an act.

The room tilted.

Alessandro grabbed the edge of a table.

“Boss?”

Gabriel ran.

Vivian stepped backward.

Luca caught Alessandro again.

This time Alessandro shoved his hand away.

“Doctor.”

That single word changed the ballroom.

Gabriel shouted for Dr. Feldman, one of Alessandro’s guests.

People turned.

Music stopped.

Three hundred faces stared.

Alessandro’s knees weakened.

Before darkness blurred the edges of the room, he found Lily.

She stood beside the terrace door, terrified.

Alessandro raised one unsteady hand.

Safe, he signed.

Stay with Gabriel.

Then he collapsed.

When he opened his eyes twenty-seven minutes later, he was inside the mansion’s medical room with an IV in his arm.

Dr. Feldman stood above him.

“You’re lucky.”

Alessandro’s voice came rough.

“How lucky?”

“You barely swallowed any.”

“What was it?”

“We’re testing it.”

“Will I live?”

“Yes.”

Alessandro closed his eyes once.

“Good.”

He turned toward Gabriel.

“Where are Vivian and Luca?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Both still inside.”

“Rosa?”

“Kitchen.”

“Lily?”

“With her.”

Alessandro pulled the IV line enough to sit higher.

“Lock every exterior gate.”

Gabriel stared.

“All guests?”

“Nobody leaves.”

“Alessandro—”

“Nobody.”

Gabriel nodded.

Alessandro’s voice lowered.

“And do it quietly.”

Five minutes later, Rosa entered.

She was pale.

Lily clung to her skirt.

Rosa immediately began signing.

You left the kitchen.

Lily’s face crumpled.

I’m sorry.

Rosa dropped to her knees.

She wanted to scold her.

Instead she held her.

Alessandro watched.

Then Rosa looked at him.

“Sir, I’m so sorry. I should never have brought her—”

“No.”

She stopped.

“Your daughter may have saved my life.”

Rosa’s eyes filled.

Lily looked between them.

Alessandro signed.

You did good.

Lily nodded solemnly.

Then she signed something that made Rosa go rigid.

Scar man saw me.

Alessandro’s entire body changed.

When?

After pretty lady gave you drink.

Rosa translated even though Alessandro understood.

“He saw her?”

Lily nodded.

Luca looked straight at me.

The room became silent.

Alessandro turned toward Gabriel.

“If Luca Romano asks where the child is…”

His voice went cold.

“He does not find out.”

Gabriel nodded.

Then Dr. Feldman entered carrying a preliminary test strip.

His face was grim.

“It was poisoned.”

Rosa covered her mouth.

Alessandro said nothing.

The doctor continued.

“Enough in that glass to kill you if you’d finished it.”

Alessandro looked through the medical-room window toward the ballroom.

Somewhere beyond those doors, Vivian wore his diamonds.

Luca wore the scar he had earned saving Alessandro’s life.

One had handed him poison.

The other had expected him to drink it.

Alessandro slowly removed Vivian’s engagement ring from the chain he had been carrying for the ceremony toast.

He set it on the table.

Then looked at Gabriel.

“Bring me my fiancée.”

A pause.

“And Luca?”

Alessandro’s gray-blue eyes turned colder.

“No.”

Gabriel waited.

Alessandro looked at Lily.

“Let my brother think I still trust him.”

Because if Luca had spent fifteen years building a betrayal behind Alessandro’s back, Alessandro wanted more than an accusation.

May you like

He wanted the whole structure.

And this time, he intended to hear it before it buried anyone else.
