Chapter 6 - The Enemy at the Gate

Javier’s arrest did not end the danger.
It made it worse.
The men who had worked with him were scared.
Scared people made mistakes.
Desperate people made threats.
Three weeks after Emiliano’s surgery, Alejandro received a message from an unknown number.
A photo.
Mateo at preschool.
Taken that morning.
Underneath it were six words.
The boy still knows too much.
Alejandro’s blood went cold.
He immediately pulled Mateo from school and doubled security around the mansion.
Valeria was furious.
“We cannot keep him trapped forever,” she said.
“He is being threatened.”
“He has been trapped for two years already.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“You think I don’t know that?”
“I think you are afraid,” Valeria said. “And when you are afraid, you turn into the same walls that kept Mateo from healing.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Alejandro wanted to protect his son.
But protection was beginning to look too much like prison.
Marcus traced the message to a former logistics manager connected to Javier’s network: Esteban Cruz.
Esteban had vanished after Javier’s arrest.
Now he was demanding access to the remaining accounts Alejandro had frozen.
“He wants money,” Marcus said.
“He wants leverage,” Alejandro replied.
“And he has people.”
Alejandro looked toward Mateo’s room.
“Then we end it.”
Marcus prepared a private security operation.
But Alejandro stopped him.
“No more hidden wars,” he said. “No more men disappearing in dark places.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“What is the plan?”
“We give Esteban what he thinks he wants.”
The meeting was arranged at an abandoned construction site outside Monterrey.
Alejandro arrived with Marcus and a single black case.
Esteban waited with armed men among unfinished concrete pillars.
“You brought the accounts?” Esteban asked.
Alejandro placed the case on the ground.
“Everything Javier kept hidden.”
Esteban smiled.
“You finally learned.”
“No,” Alejandro said. “I finally changed.”
Esteban opened the case.
Inside were documents.
Account records.
Names.
Evidence.
Not money.
Esteban’s smile disappeared.
“You think this will save you?”
“It already has.”
Sirens echoed from the road.
Federal officers surrounded the site from every direction.
Marcus had sent the evidence to investigators before the meeting.
Esteban tried to run.
He did not get far.
By nightfall, the last major link in Javier’s network had been arrested.
The danger was not magically gone.
Alejandro knew it never would be.
But the immediate threat had ended.
When he returned home, Mateo was waiting in the hallway with Valeria.
The boy ran toward him.
Alejandro knelt and opened his arms.
Mateo hesitated for one second.
Then he hugged his father.
A real hug.
Not a desperate, frightened grip.
A choice.
Alejandro held him close.
“I missed you,” Mateo whispered.
Alejandro’s eyes filled.
“I missed you too.”
Valeria stood nearby, smiling.
And in that quiet hallway, Alejandro understood something he had spent his whole life refusing to learn.
Fear could make people obey.
May you like
But only love could make them stay.
