Chapter 3 - The Brother’s Betrayal

Alejandro watched the video six times.

Each time, he hoped something would change.

A trick of the light.

A distorted face.

A false recording.

Anything.

But every viewing led to the same nightmare.

Javier had been in Camila’s car.

Javier had taken her.

Javier had known exactly what happened that night.

The brother Alejandro had trusted with his life had helped destroy it.

Marcus stood beside him in the dark music room.

“What do you want to do?” Marcus asked.

Alejandro did not answer immediately.

His fingers were wrapped tightly around Camila’s bracelet.

For years, he had blamed rival organizations. He had ordered investigations. He had paid informants. He had threatened men who may have known nothing.

And all along, the answer had lived under his own roof.

“My brother has access to everything,” Alejandro finally said. “Every warehouse. Every security route. Every bank account. Every guard rotation.”

Marcus nodded grimly.

“Yes.”

“And he knows Mateo remembers.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro looked down the corridor toward the main hall, where Valeria sat on the floor with Mateo in her lap.

“That is why he kept coming here.”

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“To scare him into silence.”

Alejandro walked back to his son.

Mateo had fallen asleep against Valeria’s chest, exhausted from crying. Valeria looked up as Alejandro approached.

Her eyes were soft, but there was no fear in them now.

“Is it true?” she asked.

Alejandro nodded.

“My brother was involved.”

Valeria looked at Mateo.

“He has been carrying that alone.”

The words struck Alejandro harder than any accusation.

He had spent millions on specialists, but he had not spent enough time listening.

He had treated Mateo as a problem to solve.

A damaged thing to repair.

He had never considered that his son was not violent because he was broken.

He was violent because he had been terrified.

“I failed him,” Alejandro said.

Valeria looked up sharply.

“You can fail someone and still choose to become better for them.”

No one spoke to Alejandro Ríos that way.

No one had dared in years.

But Valeria did not sound judgmental.

She sounded honest.

Suddenly, Marcus’s earpiece crackled.

“Sir,” said a guard’s voice. “Mr. Javier has entered the property.”

Alejandro’s face hardened.

“Where?”

“Main gate. He says he came to check on Mateo.”

Valeria’s arms tightened around the sleeping child.

“No,” she whispered.

Alejandro stood.

“Take Mateo to the staff quarters,” he told her. “Stay with Doña Socorro. Lock the door. No matter who calls, no matter what they say, do not open it.”

Valeria nodded.

“What are you going to do?”

Alejandro looked toward the front entrance.

“What I should have done two years ago.”

Javier entered the mansion with his usual confidence.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit, expensive watch, polished shoes. His smile appeared warm enough for a family dinner.

“Alejandro,” he said. “I heard another nanny quit. That boy is becoming impossible.”

Alejandro stood at the center of the hall.

Four guards waited silently near the walls.

Javier noticed them.

His smile thinned.

“What is this?”

Alejandro held up the gold bracelet.

Javier’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But it changed.

“Where did you find that?” Javier asked.

“In the north wing.”

Javier said nothing.

Then Alejandro held up the tablet.

The frozen image on the screen showed Javier inside Camila’s car.

For the first time in his life, Javier looked afraid.

“Brother,” Alejandro said, “tell me why.”

Javier’s eyes darted toward the guards.

Then back to Alejandro.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Javier laughed once, bitterly.

“You inherited everything. Father’s respect. The businesses. The men. Camila. You walked into every room and everyone looked at you like you were a king.”

“And that made you murder my wife?”

“I didn’t murder her.”

Alejandro moved forward.

“Do not lie to me.”

Javier’s voice rose.

“She was going to expose us!”

“Us?”

“She found the accounts. She found out where the money was going. She wanted you to leave everything behind. She wanted you to become clean.”

Alejandro stared at him.

Camila had begged him many times to leave the darker parts of the business behind. He had always promised “soon.”

Soon had never come.

“She was going to take Mateo,” Javier continued. “She said she would testify if she had to.”

“So you had her killed.”

Javier’s mouth tightened.

“I made a call. That is all.”

The room became silent.

Alejandro’s hands curled into fists.

Javier took one step backward.

“You think you’re different from me?” he said. “You built this empire too. You gave orders. You made enemies disappear. You don’t get to stand there like some grieving husband and pretend your hands are clean.”

Alejandro’s jaw clenched.

Javier was right about one thing.

Alejandro’s hands were not clean.

But that did not mean he would let Javier hide behind his guilt.

“You are going to tell me everything,” Alejandro said.

Javier smiled faintly.

“You think you can keep me here?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“We already froze your accounts and detained your security team.”

Javier’s face went pale.

Then the mansion lights cut out.

A gunshot cracked through the darkness.

Valeria screamed from the staff corridor.

And Mateo began screaming too.

May you like

Javier had not come alone.
