Chapter 4 - The Hearing They Prepared

Camila did not sleep.

She sat beside Sofia’s hotel bed, reading the guardianship petition again and again.

Teresa claimed Camila left Sofia unattended.

Mariela claimed she had witnessed Camila screaming at the child.

Arturo claimed Daniel had privately admitted his wife was unstable.

Every statement was false.

The petition requested that Sofia be removed from Camila immediately and placed temporarily with Teresa.

“They filed this before the attack,” Camila said.

Daniel stood near the window.

“They wanted Sofia.”

“No. Your mother wanted control.”

“I won’t let her take Sofia.”

“You already let them build a story around me.”

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel had complained to his mother after arguments. He had accepted Teresa’s advice. He had told her when Camila struggled after Sofia’s birth.

Nothing serious.

Nothing unusual.

But Teresa had collected those moments and transformed them into evidence.

At eight the next morning, they entered family court with Lucía’s report, hospital records, videos, and Rosa’s envelope.

Teresa sat across the courtroom beside Arturo and their attorney.

Mariela was not present.

According to her lawyer, she was “emotionally unable” to attend.

The judge reviewed the petition first.

Teresa’s attorney described a concerned grandmother responding to years of instability.

Then Daniel’s attorney played the courtyard video.

The room became silent.

The judge watched Mariela throw the coffee.

She watched Teresa remove the cup.

She watched Arturo order Camila out.

The second recording followed.

Teresa’s own voice filled the courtroom.

Make the child cry. Camila always leaves when Sofia cries.

Teresa covered her face.

The judge looked over her glasses.

“You filed an emergency petition claiming Mrs. Camila Reyes endangered her child less than twenty-four hours before this incident?”

Teresa’s attorney stood.

“My client did not anticipate what her daughter would do.”

“You nevertheless participated in a plan to distress a two-year-old child.”

“I wanted Camila to leave,” Teresa said suddenly.

Her attorney touched her arm.

She ignored him.

“She has turned Daniel against us for years.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

“This is not a dispute about your relationship with your daughter-in-law. This is about a child.”

Teresa pointed toward Camila.

“She took our son.”

Daniel stood.

“No one took me. I stayed because confronting you was harder than disappointing my wife.”

Teresa stared at him.

The judge dismissed the guardianship petition, issued temporary protective orders against Teresa, Arturo, and Mariela, and referred the false statements for investigation.

Outside the courtroom, reporters had gathered because Esteban’s online accusations had drawn attention.

He stood on the steps giving an interview.

“My wife is the victim of a coordinated attack,” he said. “The video has been manipulated.”

Lucía approached him with two officers.

“Esteban Ríos?”

He turned.

“You are being detained for suspected evidence tampering and intimidation of a witness.”

His face changed.

“What witness?”

Rosa stepped through the courthouse doors.

Esteban looked at her.

That reaction was captured by every camera.

Mariela was arrested later that afternoon.

She had attempted to leave the state using Iker’s documents and cash withdrawn from an account controlled by Arturo.

The prosecutor charged her with aggravated assault against a minor.

Teresa and Arturo faced obstruction and false-report allegations.

Daniel’s extended family stopped calling.

The silence was almost peaceful.

Then, that evening, the pediatric burn specialist gave Camila and Daniel difficult news.

Sofia’s cheek would likely retain a visible scar.

Treatment could reduce it, but not erase it entirely.

Camila sat in the clinic parking lot and cried for the first time since the attack.

Daniel held her.

“I should have protected her,” he whispered.

“We both should have left sooner.”

“I kept waiting for them to change.”

“So did I.”

They remained there until Sofia woke in her car seat and asked for water.

That night, Daniel received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Iker sitting alone in Teresa’s living room.

The caption read:

You saved your daughter. Who will save Mariela’s son?

Daniel immediately called Lucía.

Police went to the house.

Iker was not there.

Neither were Teresa and Arturo.

The photograph had been taken earlier.

A search began.

Esteban refused to say where his son was.

Mariela, speaking through her attorney, claimed her parents had taken Iker somewhere safe.

By midnight, an alert had been issued.

At one in the morning, Camila’s hotel-room phone rang.

A child whispered, “Uncle Daniel?”

Daniel grabbed the receiver.

“Iker?”

“I’m scared.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

In the background, Teresa’s voice shouted.

The line went dead.

Police traced the call to a remote family property outside Tapalpa.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

A mountain cabin with no central heating and only one road in.

A storm was moving through the area.

Lucía warned them not to follow.

Daniel looked at Camila.

“My mother has another child in a cold house because she thinks children are weapons.”

Camila put on her coat.

“Then we make sure this one gets home too.”

They reached the police staging area before dawn.

The cabin stood at the end of a muddy road beneath heavy rain.

Officers surrounded the property.

Through a window, Daniel saw Teresa holding Iker.

Arturo stood behind her with a hunting rifle.

Lucía raised a loudspeaker.

“Arturo, place the weapon on the floor and come outside.”

Arturo pulled Iker toward the back of the room.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Dad!”

Arturo looked through the window.

“Stay back!”

“Iker is freezing.”

“He belongs with family.”

“So did Sofia.”

Arturo’s face twisted.

“You chose that woman over us.”

“I chose my child over your control.”

Teresa opened the front door slightly.

Her hair was wet. Her face looked terrified.

“Daniel, convince them to let us leave.”

“Bring Iker outside.”

“They’ll take him from us.”

“They should.”

Arturo shouted behind her.

The rifle fired.

The window shattered.

Officers moved.

Teresa screamed.

Daniel dropped beside Camila as glass fell across the road.

Then the cabin door flew open.

Iker ran into the rain.

Camila rushed forward before anyone could stop her.

She reached the boy and covered him with her body.

Behind them, Arturo appeared in the doorway with the rifle raised.
