Chapter 2 - The Footage in the Courtyard

Daniel reached his parents’ house shortly after midnight.

The iron gate was closed, but his code still worked.

For the first time in his life, entering the home where he had grown up felt like trespassing.

The courtyard lights remained on. A dark coffee stain marked the cement beside the patio table, and a small plastic truck lay near the fountain.

Sofia’s yellow hair clip rested several feet away.

Daniel picked it up.

His hand closed around it so tightly that the metal edge cut into his palm.

Through the glass doors, he saw his mother, Teresa, pacing across the living room. His father, Arturo, sat with a drink beside the fireplace. Mariela stood near the staircase, speaking rapidly while her husband, Esteban, watched from the sofa.

They were not grieving.

They were planning.

Daniel remained outside long enough to hear Mariela say, “Camila will exaggerate everything. She always does.”

Teresa lowered her voice.

“The burns looked bad.”

“It was coffee, not acid.”

“She took Sofia to the hospital.”

Arturo struck his glass against the table.

“Then Daniel needs to control his wife before she destroys this family.”

Daniel opened the door.

Everyone turned.

Teresa rushed toward him.

“Daniel, thank God. We were worried.”

“You were worried?”

“Of course. Mariela told us it was an accident.”

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Was it?”

Mariela crossed her arms.

“Sofia grabbed the cup.”

“Camila said you threw it.”

“Camila hates me.”

“She was holding our screaming daughter while you stood there.”

“I panicked.”

“You told everyone Sofia touched Iker’s truck.”

Mariela’s eyes narrowed.

“That child is spoiled.”

Daniel moved so quickly that Esteban stood.

“Do not call my daughter that.”

Teresa stepped between them.

“Daniel, lower your voice.”

He laughed once.

It was a cold, unfamiliar sound.

“Sofia is in a hospital bed with burns across her face, and you want me to lower my voice?”

“We all feel terrible,” Teresa said.

“You threw Camila and Sofia out.”

“Your wife was screaming.”

“Her baby had been burned.”

“She was upsetting Iker.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

Something old inside him finally died.

For years, he had translated Teresa’s cruelty into softer language.

She was traditional.

She was protective.

She had strong opinions.

Now there was nothing left to translate.

“You protected a five-year-old from hearing cries,” he said, “by throwing an injured two-year-old into the street.”

Arturo rose.

“This is my house. You will not speak to your mother that way.”

Daniel looked toward the hallway leading to his father’s office.

“I need the security footage.”

No one answered.

That was answer enough.

Mariela’s face lost color.

“The cameras weren’t working,” she said.

“You don’t know how the system works.”

“I live here.”

“You visit. I installed it.”

Arturo stepped in front of the hallway.

“You are not accessing private property.”

Daniel removed his phone.

“I can call the police and tell them a child was assaulted here.”

Teresa gasped.

“You would call the police on your own sister?”

“Yes.”

The word landed like a stone.

Mariela laughed nervously.

“This is insane. It was an accident.”

“Then the video will prove it.”

Daniel walked toward the office.

Arturo grabbed his shoulder.

Daniel turned.

His father released him.

He had never seen that expression on his son’s face before.

Inside the office, Daniel entered the master access code. The security system displayed six camera feeds.

Courtyard.

Front gate.

Kitchen.

Living room.

Driveway.

Rear hallway.

He selected the courtyard and rewound the footage.

The video began with Sofia crouching near Iker’s red truck.

She touched the front wheel.

Mariela entered carrying a steaming coffee cup.

She said something. There was no sound, but the movement of her mouth was clear.

Sofia stood.

Mariela placed the cup on the table, snatched the toy from Sofia’s hands, and pushed the child backward.

Sofia began crying.

Then Mariela picked up the cup again.

She did not stumble.

She did not lose her balance.

She stepped closer.

She looked directly at Sofia.

And she threw the coffee.

Daniel stopped breathing.

On-screen, Sofia collapsed.

Camila ran into the courtyard.

Teresa appeared seconds later.

She looked at Sofia.

Then she looked at Mariela.

Teresa did not kneel beside the child.

She took the empty cup from Mariela’s hand and placed it beneath the outdoor sink.

Arturo arrived.

He pointed toward the gate while Camila screamed for help.

Daniel copied the footage onto his phone and an external drive.

Behind him, the office door opened.

Mariela stood there with Esteban.

“You had no right,” she said.

Daniel turned the monitor so she could see the paused image of herself throwing the coffee.

“You aimed at her face.”

“I was angry.”

“She is two.”

“She shouldn’t touch Iker’s things.”

Esteban grabbed Daniel’s phone.

Daniel caught his wrist before he could take it.

“Let go,” Esteban said.

“No.”

Teresa entered behind them.

“We can settle this privately.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You watched it happen.”

“I arrived after.”

“You cleaned up the cup.”

“I was confused.”

“You ordered Camila out.”

“I was trying to calm everyone.”

“You were protecting Mariela.”

“She’s your sister.”

“Sofia is my daughter.”

Arturo appeared in the doorway holding the external drive Daniel had placed on the desk.

“You will not take this recording.”

He snapped the drive in half.

Mariela smiled.

Daniel looked at the broken plastic pieces on the floor.

Then he held up his phone.

“It already uploaded.”

The smile vanished.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Arturo blocked him.

“If you leave with that video, do not come back.”

Daniel met his father’s eyes.

“I will never bring my wife or child into this house again.”

Teresa began crying.

“You are destroying us over one mistake.”

“No,” Daniel said. “I am finally refusing to help you hide what you are.”

He reached the courtyard.

His phone vibrated.

A notification appeared from the security system.

Remote administrator login detected.

Someone was trying to erase the recordings.

Daniel opened the archive menu.

The courtyard file disappeared.

Then the kitchen footage.

Then the living room.

One by one, the files were being deleted.

But the copy on his phone remained.

He stepped through the gate.

Before he reached his car, another file appeared in the automatic backup folder.

The system had saved a clip recorded one hour before Sofia was burned.

Daniel opened it.

The kitchen camera showed Teresa speaking privately with Mariela.

This time, the audio was active.

Teresa’s voice came through clearly.

“Camila needs to learn that Sofia will never have the same place in this family as Iker.”

Mariela smiled.

“And how do you suggest we teach her?”

Teresa looked toward the courtyard.

“Make the child cry. Camila always leaves when Sofia cries.”

Daniel stood motionless beneath the streetlight.

The coffee had not been part of the plan.

But the cruelty had been.

May you like

And his mother had started it.
