Chapter 6 - GRACE DISAPPEARS

Ethan called the police first.

Not his private security team.

Not a fixer.

Not Daniel.

The police.

Grace had spent three weeks teaching him that protecting someone was not the same as controlling the situation.

So he did the thing that frightened him most.

He asked for help.

Detectives arrived within twenty minutes.

They reviewed cameras.

Interviewed staff.

Checked Grace’s phone.

The rear service camera showed something unexpected.

Grace had walked outside willingly.

No struggle.

She had spoken to someone beside the sedan.

Then gotten inside.

Ethan stared at the footage.

“She knew them.”

A detective paused the video.

“Possibly.”

“Zoom.”

The image sharpened enough to show the driver.

Owen.

Grace’s brother.

Ethan’s anger vanished.

“Why would Owen take her?”

The answer arrived ten minutes later.

Owen called.

His voice shook.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Where is Grace?”

“She made me leave.”

“What?”

“Somebody came to my hotel. Said they knew about the audit. Said Grace was putting me in danger.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know. A woman.”

“Describe her.”

Owen did.

Mid-forties.

Dark hair.

Expensive coat.

Grace recognized the description.

She had seen the woman at the Whitmore mansion twice.

Ethan knew immediately.

“Margaret’s assistant.”

Not a corporate assistant.

Personal.

Helen Cross.

She had worked for Ethan’s mother for fifteen years.

Ethan called Margaret.

She answered groggily.

“Ethan?”

“Where is Helen?”

Silence.

“I don’t know.”

“That was too slow.”

“I fired her this afternoon.”

“Why?”

“Because federal investigators asked about transfers she processed.”

Ethan went cold.

“Helen handled the Halcyon transfers?”

“Some.”

“Did she benefit?”

“I don’t know.”

Another lie by omission.

“Mom.”

Margaret began crying.

“Helen has access to a trust account.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Helen was not protecting Margaret.

She was protecting herself.

Owen explained what happened.

After the threat at the hotel, Grace insisted on moving him somewhere unknown to Ethan’s staff because she feared a company insider had access to Whitmore security.

She returned to the mansion briefly.

Then left with Owen.

The handwritten note had been planted after she left.

Grace had not been abducted.

But now nobody knew where she was.

“Where did she go?” Ethan asked.

“She wouldn’t tell me,” Owen said.

“Why?”

“Because she said if I didn’t know, I couldn’t tell anybody.”

“Did she say anything else?”

Owen hesitated.

“She said Claire left more than one copy.”

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“What?”

“She found something inside that flash drive before she disappeared.”

A second encrypted folder.

Grace had opened it because Claire’s password hint referenced one of the babies.

FOUR HEARTS.

Inside were bank transfer logs.

Helen Cross had authorized payments from Halcyon shell companies.

Millions.

Grace realized Helen was more involved than Margaret admitted.

Then Helen approached Owen.

Grace disappeared to protect him.

Ethan felt two things at once.

Relief that Grace had left by choice.

Fury that she believed she had to do it alone.

He also understood why.

She had spent most of her adult life taking care of someone.

Her mother.

Then Owen.

Now his babies.

Grace trusted herself to carry other people.

She did not trust anyone to carry her.

At 3:17 a.m.—exactly the time Ethan had first seen her holding all four babies—his phone rang.

Grace.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

His eyes closed.

“Grace.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Don’t apologize. Just tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Helen knows people in your security office.”

“I replaced the entire night team.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“Grace.”

Silence.

“I am asking.”

Not ordering.

Asking.

She exhaled.

“I’m at my old nursing school.”

“What?”

“There’s an overnight simulation lab. My former instructor let me in.”

Despite everything, Ethan nearly laughed.

“Of course you hid in a nursing school.”

“Better than hiding in your mansion.”

“Debatable.”

He drove there with two police officers.

Grace stood outside beneath fluorescent lights.

The moment Ethan saw her, something inside him collapsed.

He walked toward her.

Stopped himself from grabbing her.

“Can I?”

Grace’s eyes filled.

She nodded.

He pulled her into his arms.

Hard.

She held him back.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Ethan whispered, “You scared me.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get to vanish alone.”

She leaned back.

“That sounds suspiciously like a rule.”

“It’s a request.”

Her face softened.

“Better.”

They turned over Claire’s second folder to investigators.

Helen Cross was arrested before sunrise while attempting to leave Illinois.

She had diverted nearly eleven million dollars personally.

She had used Claire’s badge after the funeral because it remained active under Daniel’s original hold request.

Helen knew Ethan was exhausted.

She knew Margaret and Daniel would be blamed first.

And she nearly succeeded.

By morning, Ethan should have felt victorious.

Instead, he found Grace standing beside the nursing school entrance.

“You should go back,” she said.

“To the babies?”

“To your life.”

He stared.

“You’re in my life.”

Grace looked away.

“This was temporary.”

“What was?”

“Me.”

He felt actual fear.

Not corporate fear.

Not scandal.

Loss.

“You’re leaving.”

“I need to.”

“Why?”

“Because people are starting to talk.”

“About what?”

“You know what.”

He did.

Household staff had noticed Ethan depended on Grace.

Reporters had photographed her leaving the mansion.

An online article called her “the mystery cleaner inside the Whitmore estate.”

Grace continued.

“I was hired to help your babies sleep. They’re better.”

“That isn’t the only reason you’re leaving.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

“Then say it.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“Because I’m starting to care about you.”

He stopped breathing.

“And that terrifies me.”

“Why?”

“You lost your wife three months ago.”

“I know.”

“You are grieving.”

“I know.”

“You don’t know whether you need me or love me.”

The word hung between them.

Ethan could not answer.

Because she was right.

Grace nodded.

“That’s why I have to go.”

She hugged him once.

Then stepped away.

Ethan watched her walk inside.

And for the first time since Claire died, the mansion was not the place he feared returning to.

May you like

It was the place that would feel empty because Grace was no longer inside it.
