PART 9 — The Daughter Alessandra Chose

Vanessa Sinclair had always looked born to old money.
That was the trick.
The diamonds.
The perfect hair.
The voice trained to sound soft while saying cruel things.
Society loved a woman who looked expensive enough to forgive.
But the file in Luca’s hand told a different story.
Vanessa had not been born Sinclair.
She had been born Vanessa Hale in Queens to a mother who disappeared from hospital records three days after delivery.
At age four, she entered a private school under a scholarship funded by an anonymous trust.
At twelve, her name changed.
At sixteen, she began attending society events under the sponsorship of Alessandra Moretti.
At twenty-eight, she became Luca’s girlfriend.
Not by accident.
By design.
I stared at the photograph clipped inside the file.
A young Vanessa stood beside Alessandra in front of a boarding school, smiling with the stiff obedience of a child who had been taught love was conditional.
“She raised her,” Lucia whispered.
Luca said nothing.
His silence was heavy.
Marco opened another cabinet.
More names.
More children.
Some placed with wealthy families.
Some hidden in institutions.
Some trained into positions inside banks, law firms, hospitals, city offices.
Alessandra had not merely hidden Lucia.
She had built a network out of stolen, abandoned, and purchased children.
Children raised to serve her.
Children who became adults placed exactly where she needed them.
A doctor who leaked my pregnancy records.
A clerk who buried my divorce decree.
A judge’s assistant who moved custody documents.
A boutique employee who sent Vanessa a message the moment I walked inside.
My hands went cold.
“She didn’t find me by chance,” I said.
Luca looked at me.
“No.”
“She was watching all along.”
Luca closed the file slowly.
His voice became rough.
“I brought Vanessa near you.”
I swallowed.
He had.
Maybe not knowingly.
But he had.
He had let Alessandra’s chosen daughter stand beside him, wear diamonds on his arm, and look down at me while I carried his son.
That wound reopened quietly.
Deeply.
“Isabella,” he said.
“Not now.”
He stopped.
Lucia reached for another box.
Inside was a stack of old cassette tapes, carefully labeled.
CATERINA — PRIVATE.
SALVATORE — FINAL.
LUCIA — OBSERVATION.
LUCA — CONDITIONING.
Luca stared at the last tape.
No one touched it.
Not at first.
Then he took it.
His face was unreadable, but I saw the child inside him flinch.
“Boss,” Marco said gently, “you don’t have to listen here.”
“Yes,” Luca said. “I do.”
The chapel basement had an old recorder stored in one cabinet, wrapped in cloth like a relic. Marco cleaned it, checked it, and inserted the tape.
For a moment, there was only static.
Then Alessandra’s voice filled the underground room.
Younger.
Smoother.
Crueler because she sounded almost kind.
“Luca responds well to controlled isolation after emotional disobedience. He seeks approval quickly when affection is withdrawn.”
My stomach turned.
Luca did not move.
The tape continued.
“He must learn that love is a reward, not a right. Salvatore is too sentimental with him. If the boy is to lead, he must be taught possession before tenderness.”
Lucia began crying silently.
I looked at Luca.
He stood completely still.
But his eyes were not cold.
They were empty.
The tape played on.
“He asks for his sister sometimes. He remembers more than expected. Increase correction. Remove references to Lucia from staff conversations.”
Luca whispered, “I asked for you.”
Lucia covered her mouth.
“You remembered me.”
“I thought you were a dream.”
I had spent so long seeing Luca as the cage that trapped me.
Now I was watching the cage that built him.
It did not excuse what he became.
But it explained the shape of his cruelty.
And sometimes explanations hurt more than blame.
Marco stopped the tape.
No one objected.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Luca looked at it.
I answered on speaker.
A woman laughed softly.
Vanessa.
“Isabella,” she said. “I was wondering when you’d find Mother’s little archive.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“Where are you?” he asked.
Vanessa sighed. “Still commanding rooms you don’t understand, Luca?”
“You are done.”
“No,” Vanessa said. “I was done the moment Alessandra chose your wife’s baby over me.”
My breath caught.
There it was.
Not loyalty.
Jealousy.
A daughter raised for a throne she could never inherit.
Vanessa continued.
“She promised me the Moretti name. She promised me I would stand beside you, give her an heir she could control, and finally belong to something untouchable.”
“You were never going to belong,” Lucia said suddenly.
Vanessa went silent.
Lucia stepped closer to the phone.
“I know what she does to children who belong to her.”
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then her voice changed.
Softer.
Almost wounded.
“You’re the ghost.”
“I’m the proof,” Lucia said.
Vanessa laughed again, but this time it cracked.
“Proof burns.”
Luca grabbed the phone.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa’s voice became sweet.
“The reporters outside your estate just received everything.”
I frowned.
“That helps us.”
“No,” Vanessa said. “Not everything from the basement.”
My stomach dropped.
Luca’s face darkened.
“What did you send?”
Vanessa paused.
Then said, “The tape labeled Luca.”
The line went dead.
Within minutes, phones began buzzing.
Marco’s.
The lawyers’.
Mine.
Headlines appeared fast.
Too fast.
LEAKED AUDIO: LUCA MORETTI GROOMED FROM CHILDHOOD TO CONTROL WOMEN AND FAMILY POWER.
MORETTI BOSS CONDITIONED BY STEPMOTHER, SECRET TAPES CLAIM.
ISABELLA BENNETT HID BABY FROM “POSSESSION-TRAINED” CRIME HEIR.
I stared at the screen.
This was not exposure designed to free Lucia.
This was exposure designed to destroy Luca publicly.
And maybe he deserved parts of it.
But the article placed my son’s photo beside Luca’s name.
Matteo’s face.
My baby.
Online.
I stopped breathing.
“Isabella,” Luca said.
I turned the screen toward him.
He saw the photo.
Everything in him changed.
“Find who posted that,” he said to Marco.
Marco was already moving.
Then a message arrived on my phone.
No name.
Just a video.
I opened it.
Vanessa sat in a dark room, face pale but smiling. Behind her was a wall of framed adoption certificates.
She looked into the camera.
“Hello, Isabella. Hello, Luca. If you want Matteo’s image removed from every outlet before midnight, bring Lucia to the place where Caterina died.”
The video cut.
Lucia’s face drained of color.
Luca turned to her.
“Where did Caterina die?”
May you like
Lucia whispered one word.
“The lake.”
