PART 12 — The Empty Crib

I do not remember running down the stairs.

I only remember the sound of my own voice.

Not words.

Just a sound.

A mother’s body breaking open while still alive.

Luca caught me at the front door before I could stumble into the freezing night.

“Isabella.”

“Let go of me.”

“We will find him.”

I shoved him with both hands.

“My baby is gone!”

The words tore out of me so violently that even Vanessa flinched.

Lucia stood at the foot of the stairs, one hand pressed to her mouth, eyes wide with the horror of someone watching history repeat itself.

A child taken.

A mother punished.

A family turned into a cage.

Alessandra descended behind us, calm again.

Too calm.

Luca turned on her.

“Where is my son?”

She lifted her chin.

“If I had taken him, you would never have received a call.”

That was the terrible thing.

I believed her.

Not because she was innocent.

Because she was proud.

Alessandra wanted power witnessed. She wanted people to know when she had moved the board.

This felt different.

Messier.

Faster.

Desperate.

Marco was already coordinating over the phone.

“Brooklyn police are on scene. Court officers are alive. Security was drugged, not killed. Cameras went dark for eleven minutes.”

Eleven minutes.

That was all it took to erase my entire world.

Luca’s voice was controlled, but barely.

“Who had access?”

Marco looked at Vanessa.

She went pale.

“No.”

Luca stepped toward her.

“Who?”

Vanessa shook her head. “I didn’t know. I swear I didn’t know.”

“Who had the townhouse address?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“One person besides Alessandra.”

Alessandra’s eyes narrowed.

Vanessa whispered, “Dr. Hale.”

Lucia frowned. “Who is Dr. Hale?”

Vanessa’s mouth twisted with shame.

“My birth mother.”

The room went silent.

“You said your mother disappeared,” I said.

“That’s what Alessandra told me.” Vanessa’s voice shook. “But after I was arrested, someone contacted me. She said she knew the truth about my adoption. She said she could help me get free of Alessandra.”

Luca’s eyes sharpened.

“And you gave her information?”

“No. Not Matteo.” Vanessa looked at me, desperate now. “I swear to God, Isabella, I never told her where he was. But I told her about the clinic. About Lucia. About Caterina’s files.”

Marco cursed under his breath.

Luca looked at Alessandra.

“Who is Hale?”

For the first time, Alessandra looked uncertain.

That frightened me more than her confidence.

“She was no one,” Alessandra said.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“No one? Her name is Evelyn Hale. She ran private maternity wards for half the women you blackmailed.”

Alessandra’s face went cold.

And there it was.

Recognition.

Luca saw it too.

“You know her.”

Alessandra’s answer came too late.

“I knew many doctors.”

Marco stepped closer, listening to another call.

“Boss.”

Luca turned.

“Traffic camera caught a gray medical van leaving Isabella’s block eight minutes after the breach. Partial plate. It crossed the Manhattan Bridge heading north.”

Luca moved toward the SUVs.

I grabbed the door handle before anyone could stop me.

“I’m coming.”

“No,” Luca said.

I turned on him.

The old Luca might have ordered me.

This Luca saw my face and stopped himself.

“If you come,” he said carefully, “you stay behind me.”

“No,” I said. “I stay where I can see my son.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

We drove back toward the city like the night itself was chasing us.

Lucia sat beside me, holding my hand so tightly it hurt.

Vanessa sat across from us, silent, one cheek still red from Alessandra’s slap.

No one spoke for almost an hour.

Then Vanessa whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

Her face crumpled.

“I hated you because you had what I was trained to want. Luca. The name. The child. The place beside the throne. But when I saw Matteo’s picture online, I knew he wasn’t a throne. He was just a baby.”

My voice was empty.

“If anything happens to him, your apology dies with him.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Marco’s update came twenty minutes later.

The van had stopped at a private pediatric facility in Westchester.

Closed years ago.

Owned through three shell companies.

The last director on record was Dr. Evelyn Hale.

We arrived before dawn.

The facility sat behind rusted gates, its windows dark except for a light burning on the third floor.

Luca’s men surrounded the building.

Police were still ten minutes away.

Ten minutes was too long.

I stepped out of the SUV.

Luca blocked me with one arm.

“Stay behind the line.”

“My son is in there.”

“I know.”

“No,” I said, staring at the building. “You know what it feels like to lose power. I know what it feels like to lose breath.”

That silenced him.

Then a sound came through the cold morning air.

A baby crying.

My baby.

I knew that cry.

Every cell in my body knew that cry.

“Matteo!” I screamed.

Luca moved first.

Not recklessly.

Not wildly.

With terrifying precision.

His men entered through the side door. Marco stayed with me, but I shoved past him the moment the hallway cleared.

Inside smelled of antiseptic and dust.

The crying came from upstairs.

Room 304.

The door was locked.

Luca broke it open with his shoulder.

Inside, under a bright examination light, Matteo lay in a portable bassinet, screaming, red-faced and furious.

Alive.

I ran to him.

I lifted him into my arms, sobbing so hard I could barely stand.

“My baby. My baby. I’m here. Mommy’s here.”

He quieted against my chest.

His tiny fists gripped my shirt.

The world returned.

Then I saw the woman standing by the window.

Gray hair.

White coat.

Elegant face.

Vanessa’s eyes.

Dr. Evelyn Hale.

She looked at Matteo, then at me.

“You have no idea what he is worth,” she said.

Luca stepped into the room.

“He is worth everything,” he said. “That is why you will never touch him again.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“You sound like Salvatore.”

Alessandra, who had been escorted in by court officers moments later, stopped in the doorway.

Her face went pale.

“Evelyn.”

Dr. Hale turned.

And the smile on her face became cruel.

“Hello, Alessandra.”

Vanessa whispered, “Mother?”

Evelyn did not even look at her.

She looked only at Alessandra.

“You stole my daughter,” she said.

May you like

Then she looked at Luca.

“And now I stole your son to show you exactly how it feels.”
