Chapter 4 - Checkmate

"Skylar? Skylar, what's happening?!" Elise's panicked voice buzzed in the earpiece. Skylar didn't dare respond. She slowly raised her hands, stepping back from the terminal, keeping her body between Derek and the computer screen, which was silently displaying a loading bar: Transfer 45% Complete.

"You're a persistent little bitch, I'll give you that," Derek laughed, though his eyes were cold and dead. "Arthur warned me you might try something desperate if you survived the pier. He had me put a quiet proximity alert on Leonard's badge. You triggered it the moment you stepped off the elevator."

"Derek, wait," Leonard stammered, sweating profusely. "We don't need to shoot her here. The mess—the police—"

"Shut up, Leonard," Derek snapped, never taking the gun off Skylar. "Arthur wants her dead. She's a liability. We toss her off the balcony right now. Another tragic CEO suicide."

"You really are nothing but Arthur's lapdog, aren't you, Derek?" Skylar said, her voice surprisingly steady. She needed to buy time. Transfer 60% Complete. "Does he throw you a bone every time you kill a woman for him? Did Elise get you a promotion?"

Derek's jaw tightened. "Elise was a mistake. You're the correction. Step away from the computer."

Skylar didn't move. She stared right down the barrel of the gun. "You think Arthur is going to share the money with you? Once I'm dead, he has the billions. You and Leonard are just loose ends. You know too much. How long until he sends someone to deal with you?"

"I'm his son-in-law," Derek mocked, taking a step closer.

"You're a disposable asset," Skylar shot back. Transfer 75% Complete. "Look at what he did to his own daughter. He left me to mourn him for a decade, then came back to slaughter me for cash. You think you mean anything to Arthur Sterling?"

Doubt, just a microscopic flicker of it, crossed Leonard's face. He looked at Derek’s back, then at the door. "Derek... maybe she's right. Maybe we should secure the funds first."

"I said shut up!" Derek roared, spinning slightly to aim the gun at Leonard for a fraction of a second.

It was the only opening Skylar needed.

With blinding speed, she grabbed the heavy, solid-brass decorative paperweight off the desk and hurled it with all her might. It struck Derek square in the temple with a sickening crunch.

Derek stumbled backward, firing a wild shot that shattered the floor-to-ceiling window behind Skylar, showering the room in tempered glass. The wind howled into the office.

Skylar didn't stop. She vaulted over the desk, driving her knee directly into Derek's chest, pinning him to the floor. The gun skittered across the carpet. Leonard shrieked and scrambled toward the door, trying to unlock it with trembling hands.

Derek roared in fury, throwing Skylar off him. He was bigger, stronger, and fueled by desperation. He lunged, grabbing her by the throat and slamming her against the edge of the shattered window. Fourteen floors down, the city lights blurred in Skylar's peripheral vision. The cold wind whipped her hair. It was exactly like the apartment. He was trying to push her over.

"Die, you arrogant bitch!" Derek spat, squeezing her windpipe, shoving her backward so her upper body was dangling over the precipice.

Skylar choked, black spots dancing in her vision. Her hands desperately clawed at his wrists, but his grip was iron. She was losing consciousness.

Transfer 100% Complete. Files uploaded. The quiet chime from the computer cut through the chaos.

"Transfer complete," Elise's voice screamed in the earpiece. "Skylar, the cops are entering the building! Hold on!"

Skylar’s fading eyes locked onto Derek's. She wasn't going to be a victim again. She wasn't going to let this parasite take her life.

With her last ounce of strength, she stopped fighting his hands. Instead, she reached down, grabbing the lapels of his expensive tuxedo jacket, and threw her entire body weight backward out the window.

Derek, caught completely off guard by the sudden shift in momentum and unwilling to let go of her throat, was yanked violently forward. He lost his footing, tumbling over the ledge with her.

For one terrifying second, they were both falling into the abyss.

But Skylar had planned her angle. As she fell back, her hands shot out and seized the thick, reinforced metal mullion of the window frame. Her arms screamed in agony as they caught her full body weight, slamming her back against the glass facade just below the window line.

Derek had nothing to grab.

His eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated terror as his grip tore loose from her throat. He clawed at the air, letting out a blood-curdling scream that rapidly faded into the night air as he plummeted fourteen stories down.

Skylar dangled, gasping for air, her muscles burning. She hoisted herself up, throwing one leg over the shattered sill, and dragged herself back into the office, collapsing onto the carpet.

The heavy wooden doors of the office suddenly splintered inward. A SWAT team poured into the room, assault rifles raised, tactical flashlights cutting through the darkness.

"FBI! Nobody move!"

Leonard Pike, who had been cowering behind a leather couch, immediately threw his hands in the air, sobbing. "I surrender! I'll tell you everything! It was Arthur Sterling! It was all him!"

Skylar lay on the floor, breathing heavily, staring at the ceiling. The nightmare was over.

Epilogue: Six Months Later

The sun beat down warmly on the deck of the luxury yacht anchored off the Amalfi Coast. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless azure, matching the pristine waters of the Mediterranean.

Skylar sat in a plush lounger, a pair of designer sunglasses shielding her eyes. The burn on her cheek had healed into a faint, barely noticeable silver scar—a badge of honor she wore with pride. She took a sip of a chilled mimosa, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves.

Footsteps padded softly on the teak deck. Elise emerged from the cabin, wearing a breezy summer dress, holding a tablet.

"The latest reports just came in from New York," Elise said, sitting down beside her. "Leonard Pike just took a plea deal. Twenty-five years in federal lockup in exchange for his testimony. Not that they needed it. The data dump we provided was airtight."

"And Arthur?" Skylar asked, her voice calm, devoid of the fear that name used to instill.

"Federal supermax," Elise grinned, tossing the tablet onto the table. "RICO charges, domestic terrorism, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder. He's looking at three consecutive life sentences. The judge denied bail instantly. He tried to claim he was legally dead, and the judge told him he was welcome to serve his time in a coffin if he preferred."

Skylar let out a genuine, musical laugh. It felt good to laugh. It felt good to be alive.

After that fateful night, the world had watched in shock as the Sterling-Vance conspiracy unraveled. Skylar had emerged not as a victim, but as a legendary figure in the corporate world—the CEO who had single-handedly taken down a multi-billion-dollar criminal syndicate from the inside. She had reclaimed full control of her company, rooting out every last trace of Arthur and Leonard’s corruption.

But she hadn't done it alone. She had appointed a new Chief Operations Officer. Someone who knew how to find the ghosts in the machine.

"So, partner," Skylar said, turning to Elise. "Now that the company's stock is up twenty percent this quarter, what's our next move? A hostile takeover? An expansion into Europe?"

Elise leaned back, pulling down her own sunglasses and soaking in the sun. "I think, for today, our next move is ordering another round of mimosas and deciding if we want to swim or take the jet skis out."

May you like

Skylar smiled, looking out at the endless, beautiful horizon. She had survived a husband who wanted to kill her, a father who wanted to destroy her, and a world that had tried to break her. But as she sat there, wealthy, powerful, and truly free for the first time in her life, she knew one thing for certain.

Nobody was ever going to lock her in a cage again.
