Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

The safehouse was a dilapidated, off-the-grid mechanic’s garage on the outskirts of the city, smelling heavily of motor oil and ozone. Inside, the space was retrofitted with banks of high-end servers, glowing monitors, and maps connected by red string. It was the nerve center Elise had built during her three years playing a ghost.

Skylar sat on a rusted stool, wrapped in a thermal blanket, while Elise carefully applied burn ointment and sterile bandages to her cheek. The stinging relief was a welcome distraction from the mammoth task ahead of them.

"According to the ledger," Elise said, typing furiously on a mechanical keyboard with her free hand, "Leonard Pike initiated a cascading transfer protocol. Your company's funds were moved through twenty different shell corporations in the Caymans, Cyprus, and the Isle of Man. It’s designed to look like you, the CEO, panicked and embezzled the money before fleeing."

"And Leonard framed the metadata to match my IP address," Skylar deduced, her brilliant financial mind shifting into high gear despite the trauma. "But he can't fully finalize the integration into Arthur's master account without the physical encryption keys written in this ledger."

"Exactly," Elise confirmed, bringing up a blueprint of a sleek, modern skyscraper. "Which is why Leonard is throwing a massive 'reassurance' gala tonight at your corporate headquarters. He’s telling the board of directors that you suffered a mental breakdown, and he’s stepping in as acting CEO to steady the ship."

Skylar scoffed, her eyes narrowing at the blueprint. "He's hosting a party in my building while he robs me blind."

"He needs to be physically present at the mainframe terminal on the 50th floor to authorize the final ping when Arthur gives him the signal," Elise explained. "We have a very narrow window. We need to plug directly into the master terminal in Leonard's office. If I can run a bypass script using the codes in the ledger, I can reroute the billions of dollars right back into your company, lock Arthur and Leonard out permanently, and broadcast all their dirty laundry to the FBI, the SEC, and the New York Times."

"There's a problem," Skylar noted, leaning forward. "The 50th floor is biometric lockdown. Retina and fingerprint scans. Leonard will have wiped my access by now."

Elise smiled, a sharp, predatory grin. "He might have wiped your access. But he didn't wipe his."

She tossed a small, high-tech piece of plastic onto the table. It was a cloning device. "If you can get close enough to Leonard, you can clone his RFID badge and lift his thumbprint. But it means walking right into the lion's den. If Arthur or Derek spots you..."

"Derek was arrested," Skylar reminded her.

Elise shook her head slowly, turning the monitor toward Skylar. The screen showed a local news headline from two hours ago: TECH INVESTOR DEREK VANCE RELEASED ON BAIL; POLICE CITE LACK OF EVIDENCE IN DOMESTIC DISPUTE.

Skylar felt a wave of nausea. Arthur’s deep pockets had already bought Derek’s freedom. "He'll be at the gala," Skylar whispered. "Playing the distraught, concerned husband."

"We don't have to do this," Elise said gently. "We can take the ledger to the feds right now. Try to fight it in court."

"No," Skylar said firmly, standing up, dropping the thermal blanket. "If we go to the feds, Arthur's lawyers stall for years. He drains the accounts, disappears into the wind, and I spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. We do it tonight. I know this building better than anyone. I built it."

Three hours later, a sleek, rented limousine pulled up to the glittering glass facade of Sterling Tower. Paparazzi flashed their cameras, desperate for gossip about the missing CEO.

The door opened, and a woman stepped out. She wore a stunning, floor-length crimson gown that hugged her frame perfectly. A wide-brimmed designer hat and a delicate, intricate Venetian masquerade mask covered the upper half of her face, effectively hiding her burn bandages and altering her profile. Skylar moved with the elegant, commanding posture she had spent years perfecting. To the outside world, she was just another wealthy, eccentric socialite attending the corporate masquerade gala.

"Comms check," Elise's voice crackled softly in the microscopic earpiece hidden in Skylar's ear. Elise was parked in a surveillance van three blocks away.

"I hear you," Skylar murmured, flashing a forged VIP invitation to the heavily armed security guards at the door. The scanner beeped green. She was in.

The grand ballroom was a sea of opulent wealth. Champagne flowed, a string quartet played, and the elite of the financial world schmoozed. Skylar navigated the room like a ghost, her eyes scanning the crowd.

There he was.

Leonard Pike. The man she had trusted with her livelihood, laughing over a crystal flute of champagne. Beside him stood Derek. Skylar’s breath caught in her throat. Her husband looked immaculate in a black tuxedo, though he sported a faint bruise on his jaw from his arrest. He looked entirely unbothered that his wife was supposedly missing or dead.

Focus, Skylar told herself, channeling her rage into pure, cold calculation.

She needed Leonard's thumbprint. She grabbed two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter and casually glided toward the edge of Leonard's circle. As she passed behind him, she expertly feigned a stumble, colliding heavily with the CFO.

"Oh, goodness! I am so sorry!" Skylar gasped, adopting a high-pitched, breathless accent. The champagne spilled onto Leonard's expensive jacket.

"Watch it, lady!" Leonard snapped, his true, nasty colors flashing for a second before he remembered he was in public. He brushed off his jacket, turning to glare at her.

"Allow me to help," Skylar insisted, pressing a silk handkerchief into Leonard's right hand. As he grabbed it instinctively, Skylar's gloved hand brushed over his pocket, the sleek RFID cloner capturing his badge data in a split second.

"It's fine, just leave it," Leonard growled, pressing his thumb firmly against the silk handkerchief to dab his lapel.

"Terribly sorry," Skylar murmured, slipping back into the crowd. Once out of sight, she carefully retrieved the silk handkerchief. Leonard's oily thumbprint was perfectly preserved on the shiny fabric.

"I have the print and the badge," Skylar whispered into the comms.

"Good. Get to the service elevator. I'm hacking the security cameras on your route now, putting them on a thirty-second loop," Elise replied.

Skylar slipped through the kitchen, bypassing the catering staff, and reached the VIP service elevator. She flashed the cloned RFID signal from her phone. The doors slid open. She rode it to the 50th floor in agonizing silence, her heart hammering against her ribs.

The penthouse executive level was dark, bathed only in the neon glow of the city below. Skylar crept down the hallway, reaching Leonard's office. She pressed the cloned badge to the scanner. Beep. She carefully pressed the silk handkerchief onto the biometric glass. Green light.

She was in.

She moved to the massive master terminal, plugging in a discreet USB drive Elise had given her. The screen flared to life, demanding an encryption key. Skylar opened the physical ledger, flipping to the final page, and rapidly typed in the 64-character alphanumeric code Arthur had killed for.

"I'm in the mainframe," Skylar whispered.

"I see it," Elise’s voice came back, sounding tense. "I'm initiating the reverse-cascade. I'm pulling all $4.2 billion out of Arthur's offshore accounts and dumping it into an irrevocable trust locked to your biometrics. And... uploading the evidence of his fraud to the DOJ."

"How long?"

"Three minutes. The firewall is fighting me."

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open. The lights blazed on, blinding Skylar.

Standing in the doorway, leveling a 9mm pistol directly at her chest, was Derek. Leonard Pike stood behind him, looking terrified.

"Well, well," Derek sneered, stepping into the room and locking the door behind him. He reached out and ripped the masquerade mask off Skylar's face, revealing her bandaged cheek. "I thought I smelled cheap perfume and betrayal. Hello, wife."
