Chapter 6 - Through the Storm

The autumn storm had turned into a full-blown gale. Sheets of icy rain pounded the asphalt as Julian drove his SUV at dangerous speeds through the dark roads of Connecticut. Milo and Elle were strapped into the backseat, their breathing labored, their feverish cries cutting through Julian's heart like broken glass.

He had tracked the taxi's destination using the estate manager's log: a small, run-down motel near the bus station in Bridgeport.

When Julian slammed his brakes outside Room 104, the rain was blinding. He grabbed his coat, pulled his crying children against his chest, and kicked open the weathered wooden door of the motel room.

Carmen scrambled up from the small bed, startled, her hand over her heart. "Mr. Everhart?!"

Julian stood in the doorway, soaked to the skin, his hair plastered to his forehead, holding two screaming, burning-hot toddlers in his arms. He looked stripped of all his wealth, all his corporate power, all his pride. He was just a father on his knees.

"They can't breathe, Carmen," Julian gasped, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "They’re dying without her. Without you."

Carmen didn't hesitate. Forgetting the false accusations, forgetting her pride, she rushed forward. She took Elle into her arms, while little Ana woke up from the bed, rubbing her eyes, and reached out her tiny hand to Milo.

"Milo... look at me, mi vida," Carmen whispered, pressing her cool cheek against Elle's burning forehead.

Ana sat on the edge of the motel bed, singing her quiet lullaby in a sleepy, sweet voice. Milo instantly dropped his head onto Ana's lap, his ragged breathing slowing down, his blue lips returning to a soft pink as he gulped in air. Within minutes, the screaming ceased. The intense, terrifying storm inside the children dissolved into soft, rhythmic breathing.

Julian sank to the floor right beside the bed, his head resting against the mattress, tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks.

"I have the video, Carmen," Julian sobbed silently, reaching up to grasp the hem of her sweater. "Victoria set it up. Beatrice put the necklace in Ana's bag. The police are at Victoria's mansion right now arresting them both. I swear to you on my life... no one will ever disrespect you or Ana again."

Carmen looked down at the billionaire who sat weeping at her feet, then at the three children who were now fast asleep together on the cheap motel bed, their fingers intertwined.

"Julian..." she said softly, using his first name for the very first time. "I was never angry at you. I was only trying to protect my daughter."

"I know," Julian whispered, reaching up to take her hand, squeezing it tight. "Help me protect them all. Come home with me. Not as my maid... as my family."
