Chapter 5 - The Departure and The Collapse

The ballroom was thick with hostile stares. Carmen stood alone in the center of the grand room, surrounded by billionaires and security guards, her hands shaking, her throat tight with humiliation.
"I didn't take anything," Carmen said, her voice clear despite the tears streaming down her cheeks. She looked directly at Julian, her eyes pleading. "Mr. Everhart... please. Look at me. You know I would never do this. My daughter is innocent."
Julian stood frozen for three long seconds. His logical, analytical mind—the mind that managed billions—was screaming that something was deeply wrong. He looked at Victoria’s eager, cruel eyes, then at Beatrice standing nervously behind her, and finally at Carmen, whose honest, terrified gaze broke his heart.
"Lower your hands," Julian commanded the security guards, his voice like cold iron. "Carmen is not going anywhere. This event is over. Everyone leave. Now."
"Julian! Are you insane?" Victoria shrieked. "The evidence is in her bag!"
"I said OUT!" Julian roared, a sound so fierce it echoed off the gold-leaf ceiling.
Within thirty minutes, the mansion was cleared of guests. But the damage was done.
Back in the east wing, Carmen was already packing her single suitcase. She placed Ana’s small clothes inside, her tears dripping onto the fabric. Ana sat on the bed, holding her wooden bird, confused by her mother’s silent crying.
Julian pushed open the door, looking frantic. "Carmen, stop. Please. You don't have to leave. I know you didn't take it. I’m having my private cyber-security team review every frame of the hallway footage right now."
Carmen stopped packing and turned to him, her posture rigid with dignity. "It doesn't matter if you believe me, Mr. Everhart. Tonight, people pointed fingers at my three-year-old child and called her a thief. They used my baby to hurt you. I came here to work, to give my daughter a safe life. I will not let her grow up in a place where she is hated because of who we are."
"Carmen, please—" Julian stepped toward her, his eyes filled with a desperate pain he hadn't felt since the night Margaux died. "Don't leave me. The children... I need you."
"I am sorry, Mr. Everhart," Carmen whispered softly, zipping her suitcase. "Your children are healed now. But my daughter’s heart is my responsibility."
At 2:00 AM, a taxi pulled up to the gates. Carmen and Ana slipped out into the pouring rain.
Not thirty minutes after the taxi tail lights disappeared down the dark highway, the tragedy struck.
It started with a soft whimper in the nursery, followed by a violent, choking scream. Milo woke up from a nightmare, reaching out for Ana. Finding the bed beside him empty, he began to shriek. Elle woke up seconds later, her body seizing with terror as she realized the quiet warmth that had filled their home was gone.
Winifred rushed into the room, but the twins were beyond reach. Milo began hyperventilating, his lips turning blue as he gasped for air. Elle’s fever spiked to 103 degrees within minutes, her small body shaking in convulsions of grief.
"Mr. Everhart! Come quickly!" Winifred screamed down the hallway.
Julian ran into the nursery and pulled his children into his arms, but they fought him, screaming Ana’s name through ragged, painful sobs. It was worse than before. The two years of buried trauma had returned like a tidal wave, crushing the children’s fragile lungs.
At the same moment, Julian’s phone buzzed. It was Theo, calling from the study downstairs.
"Julian! We got the uncorrupted backup footage from the cloud!" Theo’s voice shouted over the phone. "Victoria’s assistant paid off Beatrice! Beatrice put the necklace in Ana’s bag at 9:15 PM while Carmen was downstairs in the kitchen! We have it on high-definition infrared video!"
Julian looked at his suffocating children, their tiny faces blue, their hearts pounding wildly against his chest. He looked at the rain lashing against the window.

"Winifred, call the paramedic unit to follow my car!" Julian barked, scooping both twins into his arms. "I'm going to get them back."
