Chapter 6 - The Trial of Secrets

Three months later, the county courthouse was packed with reporters, investigators, and spectators.

The forensic report from Aaron Calder’s exhumed remains had come back conclusive: lethal levels of thallium—a odorless, tasteless heavy metal toxin—were found in his hair follicles and bone tissue, proving long-term, deliberate poisoning over eight months.

Reena sat at the defense table, stripped of her expensive clothes, wearing an orange jumpsuit. The charges against her were overwhelming: First-Degree Murder, Attempted Murder of two minors, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Insurance Fraud.

The trial reached its dramatic climax when the prosecution called its key witness.

The courtroom fell deathly silent as six-year-old Drew was rolled up to the witness stand in his wheelchair. His cast was gone, replaced by a sturdy leg brace. He looked small in the large wooden chair, but his eyes were steady. Peter sat in the front row, giving his nephew a reassuring nod.

The prosecutor stepped forward gently. “Drew, do you see the person who locked you in the room in this court today?”

Drew turned his head and looked directly at Reena. Reena tried to glare at him, attempting to exert her old psychological control, but Drew didn't flinch.

He pointed a small, firm finger straight at her.

“Yes. She locked us in the dark. She broke my leg when I tried to protect Lily, and she told us nobody loved us.” Drew took a deep breath, his young voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. “But she was wrong. My uncle Peter loved us. And he found us.”

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Several jurors wiped away tears. Reena’s lawyer slumped back in his chair, knowing the case was lost.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

The verdict was read: Guilty on all counts.

The judge looked down at Reena with cold disgust before issuing the sentence: two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. As Reena was led away in chains, screaming curses at the courtroom, Peter embraced Drew and held him tight, feeling the weight of three agonizing years finally lift from their shoulders.
