Chapter 3 - The Twisted Narrative

By midnight, Peter sat in the pediatric recovery room, watching the steady rise and fall of Drew’s chest. The boy’s leg was now encased in a bright blue cast, elevated with heavy pins to realign the splintered bone. Beside him, Lily slept fitfully, her tiny hand clutching Peter’s thumb as if letting go meant falling back into the dark.
Suddenly, the door to the room slammed open.
Reena stood in the threshold. She wasn't wearing handcuffs—not yet. She was accompanied by a slick, sharp-suited attorney and a woman carrying a leather briefcase. Reena’s hair was artfully disheveled, her eyes rimmed with theatrical red, tears streaming down her cheeks on command.
“My babies!” Reena sobbed loudly, rushing toward the bed. “Oh God, Peter, what did you do to them? Where did you take my children?!”
Peter stood up instantly, stepping between Reena and the bed. His frame blocked her completely. “Don’t you dare come near them.”
“Step back, Mr. Calder,” her attorney spoke up smoothly, holding up a paper. “I am Arthur Sterling, representing Mrs. Reena Calder. My client returned home to find her children missing and immediately contacted the authorities, only to discover you had abducted them from her property while she was out running errands.”
“Abducted?!” Peter snapped, his voice a low, lethal growl. “Drew dragged himself seven blocks on a broken leg because you locked them in a dark cellar to starve!”
“That is a monstrous lie!” Reena shrieked, clutching her chest. “Drew has a severe behavioral disorder! He self-harms! He fell off the playground weeks ago and I was treating him at home per private medical advice! He broke out during one of his episodes and kidnapped his little sister! You manipulated a confused child, Peter, because you’ve hated me ever since Aaron died!”
The audacity of her spin sent a cold chill down Peter’s spine. She was building a narrative—painting Drew as mentally unstable and Peter as an vengeful, estranged uncle orchestrating a smear campaign.
Detective Miller stepped into the room from the hallway, his expression icy. “Mrs. Calder, that’s enough. You are not permitted near these children per an emergency protective order issued by CPS an hour ago.”
Reena’s dramatic tears dried up instantly. Her eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom as she looked at Peter.
“You think you’re saving them, Peter?” she whispered, leaning close enough so only he could hear while her lawyer talked to Miller. “You don’t know anything about what Aaron left behind. If you try to take my kids, I will tear your life apart until there is nothing left.”

“They aren't your kids,” Peter whispered back, unwavering. “They’re Aaron’s. And starting tonight, you’re done hurting them.”
