Chapter 8 - The Last Debt

Noah was brought to a hospital under federal protection.

Hunter saw him through the nursery glass before anyone allowed her inside.

He was smaller than he should have been for three weeks old, but he was alive. His chest rose and fell. His little hand moved beneath the blanket.

Alive.

Hunter pressed both palms against the glass and wept so hard a nurse had to support her.

“He’s stable,” Dr. Kline said gently. “Dehydrated. Malnourished. But stable. He has a real chance.”

A real chance.

For three weeks, Hunter had mourned a child who was breathing only miles away.

When she was finally allowed into the room, she did not know what to say.

Noah lay in the bassinet, his eyes closed.

“Hi,” she whispered.

The word felt too small for the moment.

“I’m your mom.”

His fingers moved.

Hunter reached down, and his hand curled around one of hers.

The world stopped.

Behind her, Lorenzo stood in the doorway holding Leo.

Two boys.

Two futures.

Two reasons to end a war that had already consumed too much.

But Antonio Rossi was not finished.

That evening, a message arrived on Lorenzo’s private phone.

A video.

Antonio sat in a dim room, older than the photographs but unmistakable. Silver hair. Cold eyes. The face of a man who believed fear was the only language that mattered.

“You chose weakness,” Antonio said into the camera. “You gave our family to the government. You disgraced your father.”

Then the camera shifted.

A bomb.

Attached beneath Lorenzo’s car.

“Midnight,” Antonio continued. “Drive to the old Rossi docks alone. Or your son dies first.”

The video ended.

Hunter looked at Lorenzo. “He’s bluffing.”

“No,” Lorenzo said. “He isn’t.”

Marco immediately began tracking the signal. Federal agents moved to secure the hospital. Bomb squads inspected every vehicle.

But Antonio had planned for that.

At 11:42 p.m., the hospital lights went out.

Panic erupted through the pediatric wing.

Hunter grabbed both babies, one in each arm, as backup generators failed to activate.

A nurse screamed from the corridor.

Then Hunter heard a voice over the intercom.

“Bring Leo to the roof.”

Antonio.

Lorenzo appeared at the door with Marco and Agent Kline.

“No,” Hunter said immediately.

“We have a plan,” Kline told her.

“He wants Leo.”

“And he will not get him.”

Lorenzo stepped close to Hunter. His face was calm, but his hands were shaking.

“I need you to trust me.”

She looked into his eyes.

The man who had once answered every threat with violence was now standing in a dark hospital, choosing something harder.

Trust.

“I do,” she whispered.

The plan moved quickly.

A decoy carrier. Federal snipers. Marco’s security team positioned below. Hunter and the babies remained in a secured room while Lorenzo went to the roof wearing a wire.

But halfway through, Hunter noticed something.

The nurse who had helped her earlier was gone.

So was Noah.

The bassinet beside her was empty.

Her scream tore through the room.

Antonio had never wanted Leo.

Leo was guarded too heavily.

He wanted Noah.

The child no one knew existed until now.

The child who could destroy Antonio’s leverage over Hunter—or become it.

Hunter ran.

She did not think. She did not wait for guards. She followed the sound of the emergency stairwell door slamming shut and raced upward.

On the roof, rain whipped across the concrete.

Antonio stood near the ledge, holding Noah in one arm.

Lorenzo faced him from ten feet away.

“Give him back,” Hunter cried.

Antonio looked at her and smiled.

“Claire’s daughter,” he said. “You have her eyes.”

“Put my son down.”

“You don’t command me.”

Lorenzo stepped forward. “She does now.”

Antonio laughed. “You would turn against your own blood for a maid?”

Lorenzo’s voice was steady. “She is family.”

Antonio’s smile faded.

“No,” he said. “Family is obedience.”

“No,” Lorenzo replied. “Family is who you protect.”

Antonio lifted the gun in his free hand.

Everything happened at once.

Hunter lunged forward.

Marco fired.

Antonio staggered backward, the gun falling from his hand. He clutched Noah tightly for one terrible second, then collapsed to his knees.

Hunter reached them first.

She took Noah from his arms and held him against her chest.

Antonio looked up at Lorenzo, blood mixing with rainwater.

“You’ll become me,” he whispered.

Lorenzo looked down at him.

“No,” he said. “I already was you.”

Sirens rose below.

Antonio was taken alive.

May you like

And for the first time in decades, the Rossi family’s reign of silence began to break.
