Chapter 7 - The Name Beneath the Name

Hunter had always known almost nothing about her mother.
Claire Vale had died when Hunter was eight. A car accident, the foster system told her. No relatives. No family records worth tracing. Just a box of old photographs, a silver necklace, and a name that seemed to vanish wherever Hunter tried to follow it.
Now Lorenzo placed one of those missing pieces in front of her.
A file.
Inside was an old photograph of a young woman standing beside a dark-haired man Hunter had never seen before. On the back, in faded ink, were the words:
Claire and Daniel. 1998.
Daniel Rossi.
Antonio Rossi’s hidden first son.
Hunter felt sick.
“My mother never told me any of this,” she said.
“She may not have known everything,” Lorenzo said.
“She knew enough to run.”
Marco quietly placed another item on the desk: a photograph recovered from Vivian’s room.
It showed Hunter as a child, sitting on a swing in a public park.
Someone had been watching her for years.
Hunter’s hands began to shake.
“So Noah…” She could barely say his name. “He was taken because of this family?”
“It appears that way,” Lorenzo said.
“Why would Antonio take my baby?”
“To control you,” Marco said. “Or to use you against Lorenzo.”
Hunter stared at Leo.
Two babies.
One she believed dead.
One she had saved.
Both tied to a family she had never known was hers.
Her grief turned to rage so quickly it frightened her.
“I want to find him,” she said.
Lorenzo nodded. “We will.”
“No.” Hunter stood, holding Leo protectively. “Not with guns. Not with men disappearing. Not with your old way.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I do if you want me to stay.”
The words came out before she could stop them.
For a moment, she thought Lorenzo might explode.
Instead, he looked at Leo, then back at her.
“You would leave him?”
“I would never leave him,” Hunter said. “But I will not let Noah become another casualty of revenge.”
Lorenzo looked away.
That afternoon, he made calls that shocked even Marco.
He contacted federal authorities.
He turned over records—shipping accounts, offshore ledgers, names of corrupt brokers and contractors. Enough information to begin dismantling the criminal skeleton beneath the Rossi empire.
Marco stared at him in disbelief. “Boss, once you do this, there’s no coming back.”
“I’m not going back.”
“What if they can’t protect us?”
Lorenzo looked at Hunter and Leo.
“Then I protect them without becoming him.”
The operation began that night.
Using information from Vivian’s burner phone and Price’s recording, federal agents traced Antonio’s network to an abandoned private medical facility in upstate New York. Officially, it had been closed for years.
Unofficially, it was still receiving shipments.
Security footage.
Medical supplies.
Infant formula.
Hunter went pale when the agents showed her an inventory report.
There were bottles of the same compound used to poison Leo.
Antonio had been preparing for Leo’s death for months.
But there was also a pediatric ward.
And one recent patient file listed only an initial:
N. V.
Hunter could not breathe.
Lorenzo reached for her hand.
She almost pulled away.
Then she let him hold it.
The raid was scheduled for dawn.
Lorenzo wanted to go.
The FBI agent in charge, Special Agent Mara Kline, refused. “You are a target. You are emotionally compromised. You will stay here.”
“He may have my child,” Hunter said.
“And we will bring him back,” Kline replied. “But you cannot walk into a hostage operation carrying grief and hope. That is how people get killed.”
Hunter hated her for being right.
The waiting was unbearable.
Hours passed.
Leo slept in Hunter’s arms, warm and full. Lorenzo sat beside them, silent.
At 9:17 a.m., the phone rang.
Agent Kline.
Lorenzo answered.
Hunter watched his face.
First, nothing.
Then shock.
Then something she had not seen in him before.
Relief.
“They found him,” Lorenzo said.
Hunter’s knees gave out.
“He’s alive.”
The room blurred.
“He’s alive,” Lorenzo repeated. “Hunter, Noah is alive.”
A sound broke from her that was not quite a sob and not quite a scream.
But Agent Kline was still speaking.
Lorenzo listened, and the relief vanished.
“What?” Hunter whispered.
He closed his eyes.
May you like
“Antonio escaped.”
