Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH I COULD NOT ESCAPE
Camila stood outside the greenhouse holding a silver flashlight.
Two private security guards waited behind her.
Lorena slipped Adrian’s letter beneath her coat while Gabriel closed the metal box.
“What are you doing here?” Camila asked.
“Looking for the truth,” Gabriel answered.
“The truth is that your wife humiliated this family and Lorena nearly killed your brother.”
“You knew about the affair.”
“I knew Bianca was unhappy.”
“You arranged their meetings.”
“I prevented carelessness from becoming public scandal.”
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“You scheduled betrayal.”
Camila stepped into the greenhouse.
“What did you find?”
“Nothing,” Lorena said.
Camila’s gaze settled on the disturbed base of the statue.
“You have always been a terrible liar.”
One guard moved forward.
Lorena raised her phone.
“This conversation is being transmitted to my attorney.”
It was a bluff.
Camila stopped the guard anyway.
“You are facing criminal charges,” she told Lorena. “Nobody will believe an unstable woman who poisoned her husband.”
“I confessed.”
The answer unsettled her.
“What?”
“I admitted what I did.”
“You foolish girl.”
“I will face the consequences.”
Camila’s eyes narrowed.
Lorena continued.
“That is the difference between us.”
Gabriel stepped between his mother and the statue.
“What happened to Father?”
Camila’s expression remained still.
“He suffered a stroke.”
“He wrote that you interfered with his medication.”
“He was confused near the end.”
“He was running the company.”
“He was becoming paranoid.”
“You used the same word about Lorena.”
Camila glanced toward the guards.
“Remove them.”
Before either man moved, red and blue lights appeared beyond the garden wall.
Naomi had instructed Lorena to notify Detective Ellis before entering the property. Lorena had reluctantly followed the advice.
Police officers entered through the gate with a search warrant connected to the forged financial records.
Camila did not resist.
She simply watched as officers opened Adrian’s hidden box.
The mansion was searched until sunrise.
Investigators seized computers, trust records, medication logs, and several phones.
A locked cabinet inside Camila’s dressing room contained signature samples belonging to Lorena and Gabriel.
It also contained copies of Bianca’s hotel reservations with Zachary.
Camila had documented every meeting.
She had not protected the affair.
She had preserved evidence she could use against both participants.
Bianca was brought to the district attorney’s office that morning.
Facing conspiracy and financial-fraud questions, she agreed to cooperate.
She admitted Camila had known about the affair from the beginning.
“Camila told me Zachary’s marriage was already over,” Bianca said during a recorded interview. “She said Lorena remained only because the company needed her contracts until the merger.”
“Did Zachary promise to marry you?” an investigator asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you receive money from him?”
“Gifts.”
“Purchased with company accounts?”
“I didn’t know that.”
The invoices told a different story.
Bianca’s jewelry, handbags, hotel stays, and apartment lease had been categorized as medical-conference expenses.
“Did Camila offer you a company position?”
“Yes.”
“In exchange for what?”
Bianca cried before answering.
“She wanted copies of everything Zachary told me.”
Camila had used Bianca to spy on her own son.
Zachary believed he was carrying on a secret affair.
Bianca believed she was becoming the future Mrs. Woodward.
Camila controlled both of them.
Lorena listened to the interview from Naomi’s office.
None of it erased her own act.
The criminal case against her continued.
Doctors confirmed that Zachary had no permanent organ damage, but he required weeks of recovery and suffered recurring muscle weakness.
Prosecutors charged Lorena with reckless administration of a harmful substance and evidence tampering.
The maximum sentence frightened her.
Naomi negotiated for months.
Lorena provided financial records, testified before a grand jury, and surrendered the veterinary container voluntarily.
She never claimed the affair justified what she had done.
At her plea hearing, the judge addressed her directly.
“You discovered betrayal and chose retaliation instead of law.”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“You understood the substance could cause harm.”
“Yes.”
“Do you accept that your husband’s misconduct did not grant you the right to endanger his life?”
“I do.”
The courtroom remained silent.
Zachary sat behind the prosecutor wearing a dark suit and leaning on a cane.
His attorney asked the judge for incarceration.
“She waited outside the room while he ingested the altered capsule,” he argued. “Her actions were calculated.”
Naomi responded.
“Mrs. Woodward called for emergency assistance immediately, confessed before testing was complete, has no prior criminal history, and has provided substantial cooperation in a major financial investigation.”
The judge imposed a suspended jail sentence, three years of supervised probation, mandatory counseling, community service, and restitution for Zachary’s uncovered medical expenses.
Lorena also agreed to resign from her corporate position while the financial case remained active.
She left the courthouse both relieved and ashamed.
Gabriel waited outside.
“You told the truth,” he said.
“I still did something terrible.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
He continued.
“You don’t need people to lie about that in order to believe you can become better.”
It was the most honest kindness anyone had offered her.
Two weeks later, Adrian Woodward’s body was exhumed under court order.
The medical examiner found evidence that his prescribed medication had been repeatedly altered before his death.
Investigators could not yet prove who changed it.
Then a former home nurse contacted Detective Ellis.
She had kept copies of text messages from Camila.
One read:
ADRIAN IS TOO AGITATED. DOUBLE TONIGHT’S DOSE AND DO NOT CALL THE DOCTOR.
The nurse refused and resigned the following morning.
A second employee later admitted Camila had personally prepared Adrian’s medication during his final week.
Camila was arrested on charges connected to financial fraud, forgery, coercion, and the circumstances of Adrian’s death.
Zachary was questioned about the transfers.
He blamed his mother.
Camila blamed Zachary.
Bianca blamed both.
The Woodward family began tearing itself apart.
Then investigators uncovered the merger agreement.
If the deal had closed, Lorena’s forged approval would have transferred her inherited ranch into a corporate guarantee worth twelve million dollars.
The ranch her father had left her would have been seized if the company defaulted.
