Chapter 1 - THE CAPSULE IN HIS JACKET

“If you’re going to cheat on me with your own brother’s wife, at least don’t be stupid enough to leave the evidence in your jacket pocket.”
Lorena Woodward whispered those words to herself as she stood alone in the dining room of the sprawling family estate in Pacific Heights, staring at a black blister pack containing a single blue capsule labeled Titan Force.
She was thirty years old and had been married to Zachary Woodward for six years. As the commercial director of a medical technology company, Zachary projected the image of a successful family man. From the outside, they seemed to have it all—a three-story mansion, elegant dinners in San Francisco, and luxury vacations in Lake Tahoe.
Inside that house, however, Lorena had slowly become invisible.
For the past six months, Zachary had not touched her once. He had moved into the home office, claiming he needed privacy because of a major corporate merger, and every question she asked was treated like an annoyance.
At the same time, Bianca, the wife of Zachary’s brother Gabriel, suddenly began showing up with designer handbags, expensive jewelry, and new clothes that her husband’s salary as a civil engineer could never explain.
Gabriel supervised overnight construction projects near Sacramento and often spent days away from home.
His absences created the perfect opportunity.
Lorena had noticed lingering glances, accidental touches that never felt accidental, and conversations that stopped the moment she walked into the kitchen.
She had always suspected.
She just never had proof.
Until that afternoon.
Zachary rushed home, took a shower, and locked himself in his office. While gathering his jacket to send it to the dry cleaner, Lorena reached into the pocket and found the capsule.
One question echoed through her mind.
Who did he need it for if he had not been near his own wife in six months?
That night, Gabriel would be working until dawn.
The heartbreak inside her slowly turned into icy determination.
She remembered a veterinary medication her father had left behind for the dogs on the family ranch. She knew it could cause a severe reaction if taken by a person.
She did not think about the law.
She did not think about the consequences.
She thought about six years of humiliation and about Camila, her mother-in-law, constantly calling her an ungrateful country girl even though Lorena was helping keep much of the family’s finances afloat.
Without stopping to consider what might happen, she carefully replaced the contents of the capsule and slipped it back into Zachary’s jacket pocket.
After dinner, Gabriel kissed Bianca goodbye and left for the construction site.
Zachary told Lorena to go to bed early because he would be “working all night.”
At exactly 12:07 a.m., she heard the office door open.
Then footsteps echoed down the hallway.
A moment later, Bianca’s bedroom door quietly clicked shut.
Lorena lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling.
Twenty minutes passed.
Then a bloodcurdling scream shattered the silence.
“Help! Get him out of here!”
It was followed by a deep, agonized roar, loud crashes against the walls, and the sound of furniture being smashed.
Camila stumbled into the hallway in her nightgown, her face drained of color. She and Lorena ran toward Bianca’s bedroom.
The door was locked from the inside.
When they finally forced it open, they found Zachary completely naked, convulsing on a bed tangled in torn sheets, foam spilling from his mouth.
Bianca, only half dressed, was curled behind a vanity table, trembling in terror.
Camila looked at her son.
Then at her favorite daughter-in-law.
Without saying a word, she collapsed unconscious in the doorway.
Lorena dialed emergency services with a trembling voice, playing the role of the horrified wife as approaching sirens filled the night.
But from the floor, Bianca looked directly at her and whispered, “Camila already knew about us.”
No one could have imagined what happened next.
Paramedics entered the mansion carrying equipment while police officers separated everyone into different rooms.
Zachary was placed on a stretcher. His body had stopped convulsing, but he remained unconscious, and an oxygen mask covered his face.
“What did he take?” a paramedic demanded.
“I don’t know,” Bianca cried.
Lorena’s hands turned cold.
The packet was no longer in Zachary’s jacket.
It lay beneath the bed, partially crushed.
An officer wearing gloves picked it up and placed it inside an evidence bag.
“Is this his?” she asked.
Bianca nodded immediately.
“I’ve seen him use them before.”
Lorena looked at her.
The admission exposed far more than the woman seemed to realize.
“How often?” the officer asked.
Bianca covered her mouth.
“I don’t know.”
Camila had regained consciousness and was sitting against the hallway wall. The moment she heard Bianca’s answer, she tried to stand.
“She’s confused,” Camila said. “My daughter-in-law is in shock.”
“Which daughter-in-law?” Lorena asked.
Camila looked at her with hatred.
The police officer noticed.
“Mrs. Woodward, we need everyone to remain separated.”
Gabriel arrived at 1:02 a.m.
He entered through the front door still wearing his orange construction vest. Dust covered his work boots, and his eyes searched the room until they found Bianca.
“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
Then he saw Zachary’s discarded shirt near the staircase.
His gaze shifted toward Bianca’s half-buttoned blouse.
The truth reached him without explanation.
“You,” he whispered.
Bianca began crying.
“Gabriel, let me explain.”
“How long?”
“It isn’t what you think.”
“My brother was naked in your bed.”
Camila stepped between them.
“This is not the time.”
Gabriel stared at his mother.
“You knew.”
Camila said nothing.
Bianca’s whisper had been correct.
Gabriel turned toward Lorena.
“Did you know?”
“I suspected.”
“How long?”
“For months.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I had no proof.”
“You saw enough.”
His anger struck her even though she understood it was not truly directed at her.
An officer entered from the hallway.
“Mr. Woodward has been transported to California Pacific Medical Center. His condition is serious but currently stable.”
Lorena’s knees weakened with relief and dread.
She had wanted proof.
She had wanted humiliation.
She had not wanted Zachary dead.
The officer continued.
“Doctors believe he ingested something not intended for human consumption. We will need statements from everyone in the house.”
Camila slowly turned toward Lorena.
The look in her eyes was different now.
Not suspicion.
Recognition.
Later, Lorena would understand that Camila had seen the veterinary container months earlier when visiting the ranch.
At that moment, however, Camila said nothing.
She simply approached Lorena and placed one hand on her arm.
“To the police, you are a frightened wife,” she whispered. “Keep it that way.”
Lorena pulled away.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that if Zachary dies, nobody in this house survives the investigation.”
Before Lorena could respond, Detective Mara Ellis entered Bianca’s bedroom and asked everyone to step away from the furniture.
Lorena watched the detective photograph the damaged capsule packet.
Then Ellis reached beneath the nightstand and recovered a second phone.
Bianca lunged toward it.
“That’s mine.”
The detective examined the locked screen.
A message preview was still visible.
It had been sent by Camila only ten minutes before Zachary entered the room.
GABRIEL IS GONE. LORENA IS UPSTAIRS. YOU HAVE UNTIL ONE.
Gabriel read the words over the detective’s shoulder.
His face became completely still.
“My mother scheduled my wife’s affair with my brother.”
Camila closed her eyes.
Detective Ellis placed the phone inside an evidence bag.
Then another message appeared on the screen.
It was from Zachary.
AFTER TONIGHT, WE MOVE THE MONEY AND REMOVE LORENA FROM THE COMPANY.
Lorena stared at the message.

Her husband’s affair was no longer the only betrayal inside the house.
It might not even have been the largest one.
