Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN IN THE BOARDROOM

The grand boardroom on the fifty-fifth floor of Northstar Robotics was packed to capacity.
The massive oak table was surrounded by twenty board members, major institutional investors, and legal representatives. At the head of the room, a massive digital display was set up for the mandatory live presentation of Project Apex.
Richard Vance sat near the center of the table, looking like a king about to be crowned. He checked his gold watch, smiling smoothly at the gathered press and board members.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Vance announced, standing up and adjusting his jacket. “As Vice Chairman, it pains me to bring this emergency meeting to order. But our primary duty is to the shareholders. Over the past seventy-two hours, we have seen disturbing media leaks regarding Ms. Whitmore’s personal judgment, alongside severe delays in our core AI architecture. It is clear that Claire’s health and personal circumstances have compromised her ability to lead.”
Murmurs of agreement rippled through several older board members.
“Therefore,” Vance continued, his voice swelling with triumphant authority, “I move for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Claire Whitmore as CEO and appoint an interim executive management committee—”
The heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom slammed open.
Claire rolled into the room.
She wasn't wearing her usual subtle corporate grey. She wore a striking, brilliant crimson suit. Her head was held high, her spine straight, radiating a power that made the entire room instantly go dead silent.
Flanking her was Marcus, Arthur Pendelton, and standing proudly in a clean charcoal suit, Mason Reed.
“You’re out of order, Richard,” Claire’s voice echoed across the massive room, clear and commanding as a silver bell.
Vance’s eyes narrowed. “Claire. This is an executive board session. Mr. Reed has no standing here—”
“Mr. Reed is here as a key technical witness in a federal criminal investigation,” Claire interrupted smoothly as she took her place at the head of the table. She tapped a command into her tablet.
The massive digital display behind Vance flickered.
Instead of the corporate logo, high-resolution schematics of the server room’s junction box appeared, followed by a clear, live diagnostic feed.
“Three days ago,” Claire announced to the stunned board, “an unauthorized hardware kill-switch was discovered attached to Project Apex’s primary neural network. Had our scheduled diagnostic run today, the surge would have destroyed fifty million dollars of company property and set our AI deployment back by two years.”
Gasps erupted around the table.
Vance’s face hardened. “This is ridiculous! A cheap theatrical ploy to distract from your own failures! You expect us to take the word of a low-level electrician?”
Mason stepped forward. He didn't look nervous. He looked steady, grounded, and utterly unimpressed by the room full of suits.
“The kill-switch was designed to trigger via a remote network ping,” Mason explained calmly, clicking a button on a remote. “When I discovered the bypass, I didn't destroy it. I re-routed the connection through a hidden tracing protocol.”
On the screen, a line of complex network code scrolled rapidly, settling on a highlighted red line.
“At 6:14 AM this morning,” Mason continued, “someone logged into an encrypted server from a private terminal inside this building and executed the destruction command. The IP address, security badge key, and biometric signature matched a single terminal.”
The screen flashed, displaying a photo of a security badge and a name: RICHARD VANCE.
Vance went pale, taking an involuntary step back. “This is a frame-up! It’s falsified!”
“We also subpoenaed the financial records of Hale Securities,” Pendelton chimed in, tossing a legal dossier onto the center of the table. “The firm that Vance used to pay off the offshore accounts that funded the media smear campaign against Ms. Whitmore, as well as the fraudulent child endangerment report filed against Mr. Reed.”
Two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the back of the room, accompanied by Northstar corporate security.
“Richard Vance,” the lead federal agent stated, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, federal wire fraud, filing a false police report, and attempted destruction of critical infrastructure.”
The room descended into absolute chaos. Journalists began snapping photos relentlessly as the federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Vance’s arms and forcing them behind his back.
Vance struggled, his face twisted in ugly, desperate rage as he was dragged past Claire’s chair. “You think you’ve won, Claire?! You’re still broken! You’re still sitting in a chair! You’re nothing without this company!”
Claire looked up at him, her eyes calm, beautiful, and completely unbothered.
“I am the founder of this company, Richard,” Claire said softly, her voice carrying over the din of the room. “And unlike you... I stand on solid ground.”
As Vance was led away in shame, the remaining board members slowly stood up, one by one, breaking into a thunderous, standing ovation.

Claire looked across the room at Mason. He was smiling at her—a warm, proud smile that made everything else in the world fade away.
